Anyone else find Ren whiny and annoying? I feel like I really need to get that off my chest. I thought his whole spaz-out moments were borderline comedy also. Very childish and angsty. Not what I'd want from a leading villain.

You know who else was a whiny, annoying bitch?

Luke in episode 4, he literally complained for most of the movie.

He's pretty wounded, he just killed his father so unquestionably there is a lot on his mind, he then fights Finn and first dominates Rey, who only manages to gain the upper hand after the whole "Close my eyes and let the Force in" scene. If we then add that his training is supposedly unfinished, it's not too farfetched. I could see why some have issues with that though. Maybe they could've had Chewie intervene, but I think they wanted to drive home that Kylo loses? We'll see how things work out in the other movies.

For me it would be ideal if Finn got a lucky shot and cut off Kylo's off hand. This does a few things:

1- hands are lost in SW by the dozen, Kylo can easily get a new one
2- it gives Finn a small victory, this is important since he's the "normal guy" and he loses a lot so he deserves a win
3- it makes Rey's defeat of Kylo more plausible as he lost his hand
4- it sets up future conflict between Kylo and Finn
5- it's a franchise tradition

Maybe I'm wrong and misread the movie, but I did not at all get the impression that the entirely of the Republic's government and fleet were wiped out by Starkiller.

"Rey is poor, her family's gone, GUYS LOOK HOW RAD A PILOT SHE IS!" It was tooooo fast for me. At least with Anakin we learn that he's a tech whiz. With Luke we know he has a moral center. With Rey we just know her circumstances more than her character. Just like two or three more scenes to build up her "skills/attributes" tab on Wikipedia, basically.

It begins...

I'm guessing his instructions from Luke were to stay in low power mode until they found a force sensitive person that would be able to be trained by him.

Remember, they said he fled after kylo turned to the dark side while training with him and killed the other force sensitive people. He was worried about training anymore force sensitive people because he doesn't want to relive what happened, so he probably told R2 to wait until someone appears that both is force sensitive and also has a clear sense of the light side.

i got the impression that luke woke him remotely(after all, in Rey's vision it's implied that luke put him down following the betrayal)

Yeah, that part about Rey could make sense.

I still think Finn held his own against Kylo a little too well. Yes, Kylo clearly showed he was still "green" in terms of being a walking death-machine and he was hurt but I think he could still get rid of Finn with relative ease.

I wish they had shown Finn getting through the fight by being more resourceful, like using the environment / trees / throwing stuff, etc.to dodge Kylo instead of standing his ground in lightsaber combat.

Kylo did just kill his father on top of being hurt. I don't buy into the fact that he's soulless and evil--but that he's genuinely fucked in the head from not finishing his dark side training (and possibly in general. It'd be really cool if he was just an unstable kid and that's why he was sent to Luke in the first place).

Kylo, overall, is best thought of as a tryhard Sith I think. He was told what fuels the Dark side but never how to actually control that. He's volatile and shitty and thus he's not actually very good at being a Dark side user.

Ren was perfect for me. Just perfection. They nailed the casting.

The emotion in his face. I could really nearly feel his struggle. Reminds me of a young dustin hoffman. I need to watch this a few more times to fully appreciate it.

My impression is that Phasma was always meant to be a fairly minor figure that was going to be a man and then when they decided to switch the gender (after complaints that there appeared to only be one new woman in the cast at the time), they began to promote the character as much more important than ever intended, at least in the first film.

Hopefully she gets something to do later.

I don't think they really did anything to overly promote the character though. Again, the only thing anyone ever talked about was that Phasma was cast as a woman. Nothing ever about her character.

I'm amazed at how this movie has "re-awoken" the SW fan in me. I used to read the EU books and comics all the time and make little fan fiction things off of them. I've never not loved the franchise but my activeness in it certainly hasn't been as intense as it was when I was younger. I feel it now though and it's awesome.

Loved it.

When Kylo took off his helmet I thought "Oh wow, he looks like a whiney child." Which he is and made the whole thing so much more interesting. He wants to be like his grandfather so badly, but he's not. And that line about the "pull to the light" or whatever, was really good.

Going to see it again tomorrow.

also why the fuck didn't she get on the falcon to go see luke? I guess she wants to mourn on random forest moon not yavin iv or whatever? but not to go find her brother? bugged me a little

the government just blew up
she has a lot to do

Kylo did get shot and cut prior to fighting Rey. Also, Rey's amazing performance is a mystery for them to explain in the next film (much like, "who's this snoke dude?")

As a general notion there will have been input and adjustments made for studio reasons so I'm sure he had some changes he'd like to see.

Usually with this type of thing though, you hear rumblings that the studio insisted on cuts. Like, with Age of Ultron, for instance. With this case, there hasn't really been anything like that.

Abrams has even said during a ton of interviews that Disney gave him much more autonomy than he was expecting, and let him make the movie he wanted to make, maybe that's just PR-Talk, but I feel like we would've heard something if there were significant studio meddling.

The vibe I got and one that ruins this and the OT for me.

Unless as I said Leia is declared supreme chancellor and has the balls Mon Mothma didn't to completely eradicate the remaining Empire/Order.

Ok, so i couldn't really tell with all the stuff going on but exactly how bad were Finn's & Ren's injuries?

Finn - stabbed in the shoulder and sliced in the back are the only two I can remember
Ren - Shot in the gut (him hitting himself there over and over was a great touch), slashed in the face.

I know there were more but I can't remember...

The power of a great Star Wars film. We've had nothing but trash for so long.

How in god's name is Snoke supposed to be practical? The reason he is CG is because that design can't be done practically unless it were a puppet, and then you have Andy Serkis there for no reason.

It's best not to argue or try to use logic with these, "All CGI is awful and everything should be practical!" people. I'm sure there was a TON of CGI in this movie that they didn't even notice, and the movie would've looked shittier without it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but someone on Reddit is saying that Daniel Craig is indeed in the film and is the stormtrooper that Rey does a mind trick on.

harrison was really workinbg it though. it's like he never stopped being han. carrie to some extent, but her expression never changed.

also why the fuck didn't she get on the falcon to go see luke? I guess she wants to mourn on random forest moon not yavin iv or whatever? but not to go find her brother? bugged me a little

she is the general of the resistance thats probably why.

I'm fairly certain that the Snoke we see is just a visage and whoever it really is will look vastly different. It would make sense for an evil leader to want to have an imposing and terrifying look to him when he's on the job.

I thought he'd be revealed as Luke by the end of the movie, honestly.

This reads like the "CLU looks like shit on purpose cuz the world is digital anyways" excuse.

Snoke didn't look like a hologram until it was made patently obvious by the movie.

I really do think he was supposed to perpetually look "off".

I think Finn got his shoulder fucked up by Ren's guard too. Or was it Rey ? Not sure.

You know my biggest gripe? Why waste the resources building a big ass hologram room, just to satisfy the whims of your egotisical boss? Unless it doubles up as a cinema, with a pull down screen for the projector, and some space pool tables and darts boards appear. It's such a big room. After the destruction of their base, you'd imagine some cost cutting would have to happen.

I'd imagine the opening a scrawl to 8 will begin with "Austerity! Following the overspending of the FIRST ORDER, the accountants of the EVIL organization have been forced to make budget cuts.

Meanwhile, catastrophic loss of real estate for the REPUBLIC has resulted in the privitisation of many public services, with spiraling unemployment figures and a spending deficit that slowly cripples the ECONOMY.

Unsure where to turn, GENERAL LEIA ORGANA has promised a reduction in zero hour contracts, manageable living costs, and an improved pension package for her pilots..."

she's a leader with duties larger than her personal feelings. She's made sacrifices and Im guessing she will continue to do so.

I was actually suprised at how well all the comedy worked in this film. Even the moments you would think would be eye rollers were great, like that stormtrooper leaving his gun

By the way, way more practical effects than I expected, and I expected quite a bit! Awesome stuff. I hope 8 and 9 are the same in this respect.

Yeah I was surprised at this too. It never felt embarrassing really.

What begins? The prequels suck, but I'm offering an example of decent character development. Baby Anakin is handled really well. Teen angst 2edgy emo Anakin is fucking terrible.

There is nothing decent about Anakin's character development in the prequels. Nothing.

The five seconds of Anakin screen time in ROTJ when he takes the mask off is better than the development in all three prequels combined.

They kind of are two amateurs.

Certainly wasn't expecting Qui-Gon + Ben vs Maul out of the gate .. They need time to grow.

Kylo Ren isn't an amateur unless he's been one for a long time since he was there when the Jedi Academy was destroyed. Light Saber scene was pretty meh, makes them jobbers. Only 1 single force push and it wasn't in conjunction with sabers out. He can stop a laser mid air and casually freeze people but when he pulls out his saber all he does is baseball swing. Why even use the saber?

Yeah, I guess you're right. Will be interesting to see regardless if it works out either way.

I don't understand why R2 waited till the end. Does anyone have an explanation for that or did I miss the explanation?

Probably explained in 8
He was probably waiting for Luke's daughter

I am so incredibly tired of the "star wars losing hand trope"... It's as terrible as the many many light sabers in the prequels..

I am thankful they were not going for these things again in TFA.

At first I was dissapointed in Kylo Re'ns final fight against Finn and Rey. But the reality is he was having a really shitty day I guess. He just murdered his father, took a laser blast to the gut, was worn down and injured again by Finn, and finally he had to face Rey who was relatively fresh and flexing her new force muscles.

I forgive you Kylo. everyone gets to fuck up once. Just don't disappoint me again in the next movie.

Anakin has some strong genes. This makes 3 generations of whiny Skywalker men! LOL!

I was really dissapointed in Captain Phasma. She looked nice in her armour and talked a little bit of shit. I smell Bobba Fett 2.0 vibes about her. I was hoping that she would be an ace pilot and serve as Poe's rival. So dissapointed. :(

Ren took a couple slices to his legs and shoulders too.

That's another thing I liked about the lightsaber duels at the end: you get actual battle damage on the characters. Before, all you ever see is Jedi/Sith get killed or lose limbs. The only non-lethal, non-amputation damage anyone takes is Vader, who Luke strikes on the shoulder in ESB. It was cool to see here that these things are really fucking deadly, and that when held at close quarters they can hurt in ways that aren't necessarily lethal or hugely disfiguring.

What begins? The prequels suck, but I'm offering an example of decent character development. Baby Anakin is handled really well. Teen angst 2edgy emo Anakin is fucking terrible.

I'm teasing :P But am I expecting a healthy amount of "well, at the least the prequels DID this something new" revisionism following the (imo, overblown) complaints about TFA retreading the OT.

They could do part-CGI. Something like Jeff Bridges in Tron 2.0...

Let's not.

Also the complicated makeup designs in LOTR are for things like Orcs, who don't have complex facial expressions, they just have to look monstrous and scowl. You notice Gollum in LOTR (there's that Serkis again) who needed to have full facial expressions and have smaller features and body than a person (whereas makeup adds to features) was CGI.

Even if Phasma comes back as a major threat in eps 8 and/or 9, it still takes a lot away from the character that all she did in this one was, basically, get stuffed in a locker offscreen and then disappear entirely from the film.

They really should have had a quick sequence with her, I dunno, causing a diversion and escaping from our heroes right after shutting down the generator, show she's a little more competent than any cannon fodder trooper.

At very least, have a shot of her emerging on the surface as the explosions first start going off. Moves toward a ship of troops about to take off, glares back towards the base menacingly. The tiniest bit of foreshadowing that she's still a present threat going forward.

In Phantom Menace we understand his motivations, who he is, where he comes from, etc. The movie isn't good, by any stretch, but you can give some credit where it's due.

[EDIT] And for all my gropes and complaints, I will reiterate: I REALLY enjoyed the movie. I'm just commenting on the aspects that prevented it from being a 5 star movie for me.

I was thinking about all the questions I have on the last 30 years, and of course Episode 8 will expand further on it concerning Luke, Ben, Rey, etc.

But I think Rogue One will be the movie that answers the questions on what happened to the Empire and what happened to the Rebel Alliance after Endor.
