i'm just so sad ren has no presence. I love my mysterious cloaked heavy-feeling dudes and this little dark jedi dweeb just doesn't cut it

Man, I really liked him. I liked him flipping out and smashing shit up, granted I can easily see why others would just find that cheesy too. I didn't like them just throwing out there immediately that he's being drawn to the light side, since I didn't really feel like there was a reason why given. But, that was redeemed by his final test to Sith-hood being to kill Han. You saw it coming a mile away like a lot in this movie, but it still totally worked for me.

I hope now in the next one we see him fully in on being evil. Of course he'll be redeemed in some way in the Third. But, whatever.

I really can't rank the movie yet since I need to let the TFA settle in for a bit.

But it beats anything from the Prequel trilogy.

Empire is gonna be hard to top, though.

Definitely a thumbs up.

It was still just funny because you don't expect it from BB8, you don't think he can express himself with that kind of gesture.

That was my take on it, anyway.

yeah I saw a thumbs up. Like they finally clicked and BB-8 was cool with him.

Isn't it odd how Rey's actress got to keep her accent but Finn's actor didn't? Though I guess we've never really heard a stormtrooper with a British accent before.

I think it's a hint as to Rey's origin. They were very conscious in the OT that british accents were given to Imperial people. So if she's Luke's daughter, perhaps the mother was someone imperial? Or she's just from an Imperial family?

Vader was intended to be just a mean knight with supernatural powers. When the OT was made, there was nothing else, no EU, no long history of what Siths and Jedis are and how they fight. Here 40 years later, with all the backstories and the over flashy prequals, I think they balanced out Ren pretty well. If your going to set a standard of "he cant be powerfuler than vader" then your going to make Ren boring.

The Republic, along with it's fleet, have been crippled. Yes. According to some users her Mon Motha cut down the fleet by 90% when the Empire was defeated after the Battle of Endor (or Jakku even).

Still, I don't think that the Republic is done for. Sure, they took a pretty big hit but ... Coruscant is still there.

That 90% doesn't make much sense when General Hux talks about destroying the Republic's "vaunted fleet".

Sith (and Darths) are gone. Kylo is his proper name, He is the current Master of the Knights of Ren. All of this was said over the course of the movie if you look for it. Both "Knights of Ren" and "a Master Ren"

His current proper name, right? I could have sworn Han called him "Ben".

I have a feeling that Finn was part of Luke's academy too.

It's obvious that Rey is the uber forcer user for this installment of movies, but I wouldn't be surprised if Finn is one as well.

The fact that they had him use a lightsaber twice was very telling.

That's very rare in the movies at least. People just don't use sabers willy nilly without some foreshadowing.

I felt like that was misdirection. You were supposed to think that Finn was going to be the Jedi, when it's really Rey.

Fin should be dead though, he took a lightsaber swipe right down his back. There is no fat there, it's just your spine. It really looked quite deep too.

There is still some connective tissue there to take the blow. The slash didn't look too deep.

What you like is not the character they were going for. They wanted a conflicted inexperienced emotional wreck. The complete opposite of someone like Vader. It is refreshing.

Yea but what the hell was be so emotional for? What was this little brats deal? He wasn't interesting, he was annoying and not expanding on his background did the character no favors.

Skywalkers also seem to have a trend of being a bit overconfident in themselves and a tad stubborn. Luke probably thought he could prevent Kylo Ren from going down the same path as Anakin.

I liked that Ren seemingly forgot he stopped the blast and the blast only resumed its course once Ren actually left the area

I'm honestly thinking they might go down a general "instability" route with the Skywalkers. Like, I doubt they'll come out and give it a name--but I think there's a personality disorder that runs in that family or something. Benlo struck me as an incredibly unstable individual, especially with Han saying, "He always had too much Vader in him."

I'm hoping it was less to do with him being fascinated with his Grandfather's (mis)interpreted legacy and more to do with him being a volatile and angry kid/teenager. It'd be cool if that was a side-effect of being strong in the Force while also being led to embrace it at a young age. Luke wasn't too volatile, but he didn't receive any Force training until he was older.

Yea but what the hell was be so emotional for? What was this little brats deal? He wasn't interesting, he was annoying and not expanding on his background did the character no favors.

Disagree with this entirely. I think he's a fascinating character that's a really neat take on the Dark Side. He gives into his anger, rage and emotions and thus he's not nearly as powerful as he could be. He's unstable, volatile and out of control and that leads to him being easily manipulated. He wasn't meant to be the actual villain of the entire trilogy, I don't think.

yeah I saw a thumbs up. Like they finally clicked and BB-8 was cool with him.

yeah, it's totally a thumbs up.
"i got ya back, dude!"

BB8 is a nice droid.

you know, there's 2 more movies coming.
the film's already pretty stuffed with exposition. We know that he's conflicted. We know that he WANTS to be a bad guy, but sometimes he's drawn to the light side (i.e. he feels bad for the shit he does). We're definitely going to find out what made him flip his shit and go dark.

If only there was someone who could explain what happened between Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker. If only we had someone our protagonist would eventually meet who could shed some light on the backstory of the villain in the next part. Someone who's clearly has a lot to say but was only given one line before the credits rolled.
Well, one can only hope, right?

I actually disagree. I thought he had tremendous presence when he was focused. The only time he lacked presence (IMHO) was when there was inner conflict or doubt.

I didn't hear Yoda, but I heard Obi-Wan at the end of that sequence.

Pretty sure I heard Vader, Yoda, and Obi-Wan.

Also, shame on me for not immediately realizing where Kylo's real name came from :-| When Solo yelled "Ben!" I just thought, "Aw, he just has a plain, regular name" without even connecting the dots.

I don't get this. Why do we literally need A New Hope Darth Vader 2.0? I think it's far more interesting and refreshing to have a Darth Vader wannabe. I see so many complaints here about the movie being too much of A New Hope retread (not necessarily by you, mind), but I also see so many people complaining that Ren isn't more like Darth Vader.

Ren as he is now has potential for growth. We are seeing him at the beginning of his journey into the dark side. Before he removes the mask we are seeing who he wants to become, when he flips out or takes the mask off we are seeing who he is right now. If he kept the mask on and was more mysterious he would honestly be a lot less interesting.

I'm much more excited to see Ben Solo truly grow into the Kylo Ren persona than I am to see the Kylo Ren persona either crack to reveal Ben Solo in a later film ala Anakin/Vader, or just be a dull ass bad guy like Darth Maul.

Though I imagine Kylo Ren could crack and find some sort of redemption at some point regardless, I really hope killing Han was the point of no return for him until at least the third movie.

Fin should be dead though, he took a lightsaber swipe right down his back. There is no fat there, it's just your spine. It really looked quite deep too.

In a world where mostly robotic men exist, a spinal replacement seems like a totally legit thing to imagine.

Did anyone else feel as if the destruction of Coruscant got nowhere near the attention it deserved. Like they mourned Alderaan for like half a movie, but the place where they spent like half the prequel trilogy and was the center of government is just like "Well that's unfortunate...."

From what people are saying, it wasn't Coruscant.

yeah but wasnt the entire film like ANH? ;)

Was it? Mate, you are trying to hard to hate this movie for no reason. The First Order are fanatics of the Empire.

Let me put it this way ... The First Order is somewhat like the Neo-Nazi's. They "adore" The Empire but hate it at the same time because of their known weaknesses. The Empire was very much active in playing politcal games with other systems. Do keep in mind though that during the OT the Republic was gone thank to Sidious. The First Order doesn't want to bargain with anyone. They want to rule ALONE.

Same goes for Ben Solo. He is a Darth Vader fanatic. He adores Vader yet dispises him for his weakness. Vader allowed himself to be "redeemed" by Luke. Ben Solo even said that "... I felt it again. The light!" ... He took a huge step towards the Dark-Side when he killed his own father ... he overcame one of Vader's weaknesses. Family. Love. "I know what I have to do ... but I don't know if I have the strenght to do it". Kylo-Ren is a wreck and the way he was portrayed was fantastic. I'm glad they didn't kill him off in episode 7. Was about time we got a villain that lasted more than 1 movie.

I actually disagree. I thought he had tremendous presence when he was focused. The only time he lacked presence (IMHO) was when there was inner conflict or doubt.

Really? Even in Mask Mode he wasn't cutting it for me. Like when he stepped off the ship in that first scene it didn't feel... intimidating. He felt goofy.

Only point where I was super like "Oh shit" was when he did his blaster bolt trick

Even his voice synthesizer felt off

Can you stop acting like Kylo and Anakin are anything alike ?

Anakin had legitimate reasons. Kylo is a whiny brat that was born with a silver spoon as far as we know.

Anakin didn't just decide to be evil for the sake of being evil. Which is exactly what Kylo is doing for now. It might change in the sequels, but not currently.
