This was probably the only thing that really bothered me about the movie. Generally, I don't really care about the small stuff. Big gun wipes out planets while eating a star? Cool. However, Starkiller Base really jacked with my sense of location. When it fired, Han and co. could see the beam and explosions from the planet he was on? Were they really close to Hosnian Prime or the Starkiller base at that point? In general, the Starkiller mega-weapon didn't make a lot of sense to me. I don't need everything explained, in fact, I prefer it that way, but I actually turned to my wife and said, "Wait, did they go to the Starkiller system? What planet are they on right now?"

Based on Kylo's hero worship and his pleas to help him "turn from the light" I'd be pretty surprised if he knew about Vader's redemption. Learning the truth about his death would be absolutely shake his faith and would fit in with a Kylo redemption plotline.

Neither Finn nor Rey being good at melee combat bothered me at all.

Stormtroopers clearly received some kind of melee training since that one trooper had an electro-tonfa, so Finn was likely to be part of such training as well.

Rey on the other hand was a mix of things like her being also self taught at melee combat because she was clearly great with that staff, but also it was obvious the force was guiding her strikes towards the end because the movie was trying to beat us over the head with the whole Light >>>> Dark thing.

Also in my personal head cannon, I wanna believe that Kylo was a shit duelist in general, because let's be honest if Luke was the master he wouldn't teach saber techniques primarily, he'd focus on the mysteries of the force.
 
Hmm, did Rey and Poe have any dialogue? I dont remember them speaking at all, the only thing I remember is BB8 running to Poe and Rey looking over.

I think he's more or less wondering something that wasn't answered in the movie (unless I missed it): does Star Killer move? Is it actually a planet or is it a space station disguised as a planet? If it's a planet, I don't know how it would move--seems like something that would need explaining.

The second time we see him we see his projection being turned off and then when the Starkiller base was being destroyed pieces of rock were falling on it which caused distortions.

There were tons of funny bits in the movie that didn't reference ANH.

Anytime BB-8 did something humorous it got a huge laugh from my theater, the Stormtroopers backing away with Kylo destroyed the control room, "that's not how the force works", Finn popping off in front of Phasma, "So I talk first? You talk first? How does this work", "stop grabbing my hand!" and tons of other really funny lines that I can't remember right now.

All of the above were funny without having seen ANH.

I think when at the time Ben was taken (Rey's age?) Luke didn't feel that he was old enough to know the truth. Its possible he didn't even tell him that he was related to Vader at all, Snoke told him.

We already have a party split now, with Rey and Luke at the temple and Finn and Poe doing resistance things with Leia.

Another reason I think Ren knows about Vader's redemption - Ren knew the location of Vader's grave, which means Luke had to have told him that.
 
I'll be honest, I miss some of the corny dialogue from the old movies, like "I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board"

Maybe Luke isn't 100% sure Vader died redeemed. He saw a hologram of some dude at the Ewok party but didn't recognize him. Maybe that guy saved the day instead.

He really does look great. And he looked even better in the premiere than he did in his getup in this movie.

He really got into shape for Episode VIII. Kylo Ren vs. Luke atop some city in the clouds is inevitable.

I interpreted it not as light > dark but that she had focus where Kylo was an emotional wreck who was fueled by anger but unable to channel it. Contrast his fighting style with someone like Darth Maul who fed off of the dark side but kept his anger focused.

Did he though? He had the helmet, but that doesn't mean he went and got it personally. Did I miss something?

Thinking more about how Ren finds out about Vader, Luke seems too wise to not use that story as a warning. I like the other idea mentioned above though, maybe Ben was too young before he was taken or he left.
 
Maybe by "finish what you started," Kylo meant his complete devotion to the dark side. He vows to not let the light side take over him hence killing Han.

Think the movie pointed toward him not being force-sensitive and the marketing was all misdirection. Lots of that in the trailers which I appreciate now having finally seen the movie

For example, from the previews it appeared that Poe was going to double cross the good guys due to mind control or something. Glad that never happened.

Honestly I'm starting to think they both kinda sucked and we were watching the Jedi equivalent of this

I do appreciate how goofy this movie could get, makes you realize how humorless the prequels were. I thought the first moment with C3PO was the ultimate payoff to all those gags about how many fucks Han gave about him. It was just perfect.

Regardless of how he got it, the only way anyone would have known the location of Vader's grave is through Luke. Which would lead everyone to the next question - "Hey Luke, how do you of all people know where Darth Vader's grave is? And why did you give him a burial?"

Oh, whatever. I'm vehemently anti-gun (not stricter gun control, anti-gun...I don't think we should have any guns in the U.S.). It's in the same thread as that meme that's going around calling Luke a terrorist. Lighten up.

It didn't seem like he was except for the scene when the Starkiller destroyed that system. It seemed like he could feel all the people die similar to Obi-Wan when Aldaran blew up.
