I highly doubt we will ever see Obi-Wan, Yoda, or Anakin again. Luke could definitely become a force ghost, though.

Oh man.. maybe with some proper direction he could pull it off. I heard rumors of Vader being cloned and Hayden coming back that way. If its just in ghost form I'd almost rather a CG OG Vader.

I didn't say he was "bad" but he wasn't intimidating and really just a retread of PT Anakin, and even if the acting was better, the writing for him really wasn't.
And if you do buy into his struggle, why is he struggling? Where is all this pain and conflict coming from. The only motivation we're given is because he wants to be really powerful or something. Seems kind of juvenile. At least PT Anakin was dealing with his mom and wife dying.

Don't fancy threading on eggshells in the non-spoiler thread, so I'll dump my opinions here:
Speaking as someone who isn't particularly into Star Wars: three stars out of five, it's Marvel Studios Does Star Wars. A New Hope, to be specific. I fundamentally agree with the Verge review posted earlier: a hell of a lot of motifs were repeated here, and most of the rest came from the Marvel school of comedy. For a Christmas blockbuster, it'll do the job, but it's fundamentally inessential. I can see the general consensus on this film dropping like a stone in a month or two's time.

That's why it was funny.
You don't think his parents having a rocky relationship and dumping him with his space monk uncle because they think he'll turn evil like his grandpa is enough to screw a kid up? Especially when the only things he seems to know about his grandpa are about how bad he was going out of his way to try to be.

There is no way they are ever bringing him back.
Speaking of him, after doing an image search I'm reminded that Anakin had a scar on the right side of his face.
They didn't chop Kylo's hand, but they did the second closest thing I guess, lol.
Imma go again, looks like there's one in a half hour. All flaws aside they really deserve a huge opening for making such a fun flick.
A couple points I've been thinking about and want to focus on this time:
-Kylo Ren being tempted by/resisting the seduction of the Light side is a brilliant little touch that almost says more alone, in one scene, than a full three movies of "dark side seduction soap opera" featuring the character he quite literally fanboys over. This has to be Kasdan's hand, and a hand well-played.
-With all of the callbacks, fan service and nostalgia elements piled on, the few subversions that are there work exquisitely well. When the First Order officer is questioning Kylo by the consoles, I turned to my nephew and whispered, "that dude is gonna die. He has to die." And then instead Kylo just freaks out and goes nuts with his lightsaber on the equipment like a 5-year-old. My nephew (and the theater) cracked up. Great character moment.
-One thing I don't really see being talked about in here much is how the movie plays to older audiences, people who aren't as familiar with Star Wars, and young children. I think a lot of people felt hammered over the head by certain plot points or "THIS IS STAR WARS" references, but many of those moments weren't for "us." My nephew loves Star Wars but he never really had the opportunity to be a fan before (none of the movies came out when he was at movie-watching age). He was whispering to me a bunch throughout the movie to make sure he knew who certain characters were and if they were in the old movies or not. He was constantly second-guessing if certain characters were good or bad (or might turn in the other direction). He was laughing and cheering through almost the entire movie and then at the end he had this look of pain and was like, "oh man oh man it's Luke! I hope they make another one!" And I'm like "Dude, they are already making 8 and 9" and I wish you could have seen the look on his face. Pure excitement and wonder. I think it's fine to acknowledge how derivative of the OT the plot and story beats were, but it's worth mentioning that the movie really succeeds in even managing to basically work for both hardcore adult fans who grew up with the OT, standard moviegoers who aren't even fans, and a new generation of kids who can grow up with these.

It confused me because earlier they said it was a section of the galaxy they didn't recognize but then when they showed the larger map it looked like it was a giant section of the galaxy.

Thanks for this, I definitely felt a bit lost in regard to the bigger picture. Could have done with a few conversations about taxation & trade embargoes to flesh the world out (JK!)
But what is the relationship between the new Republic & the resistance? Why is Leia with the latter but not the former? I don't mind not knowing at this point, but the question of 'what happened after Endor' is still a 30 year blank. We're being asked to assume the new order are a threat, and only imagine what they are a threat to.
It's fine given we have 2 more films to get some perspective. But it's not as clear as the OT, where everything was run by the empire, who were massive jerks, and the rebellion were a comparatively tiny band of outlaws.

Difference is when Kylo Ren throws tantrums, people react accordingly.
When Anakin threw tantrums in the prequels Padme would be like "To be angry is to be human!" "I JUST SLAUGHTERED ALL OF THE CHILDREN" "You're a good person Ani!"

I'd say Empire is still the best but TFA and A New Home are tied for second. I didn't get the retread feeling that some had, it felt new enough while still calling back to the originals
Rey and Finn are great characters, although I think we need more time with Poe
Ren was a really intimidating villain. Like a coiled spring, calm and scary but able to snap at any moment.
I do think Rey figuring out how to mind trick was pretty contrived. It would have worked better if we had seen a scene beforehand of Han or Maz telling about Jedis being able to do that
I didn't mind the CGI for Snoke, but Maz looked kind of...meh.
I guess Ren is getting a new helmet in 8? Got to sell those Kylo Ren 2.0 toys

I really hope he turns out to be really evil for Hans death to have any impact. And Rey vs him in episode 9. Both fully trained.
That would be pretty sweet but I can't see them doing it for a few reasons. One being I think they want to build up the characters that we have. Luke didn't say a single word in this movie and was only on screen for a minute so he'll have a huge role in the next movie. Plus they need to build up everyone else, screen time for other new characters they're introducing, etc.
But more importantly, I doubt they would want to show "young Obi-Wan" when it was his older self who was acting as a ghost before. I think if they did do an older version with CGI, it would look silly and the voice probably wouldn't be right. People would nitpick it. As much as I'd love to see Yoda again, I think they're moving on from it. The best we might get is little voice clips of them.
Speaking of voices, I have a feeling we see Han interact like that in a future movie. I know he didn't have force powers but maybe he learned something in 20+ years with Leia. I certainly don't expect him to appear as a ghost but we may hear him say something and communicate with certain people at some point. That would be pretty cool, I think.

Nobody's gonna like to hear this but the similarly framed Anakin/Padme wedding shot in 2 is probably better. And the music is better in that one too.
To me, that's the point of his struggle. He's not well-trained, and what makes him intimidating is that he's an extremely powerful loose cannon. He's also young, and has this twisted, idealized image of Vader he wants to live up to but doesn't know how to because he's inexperienced and never learned how to properly use the force because his dark emotions get the best of him.

Carrie Fisher seemingly really turned her life around, and I quite enjoyed the Wishful Drinking Broadway play (based on her book) which she performed 8 years ago.
It's too bad that her role in The Force Awakens was so limited; she certainly is capable of much more.

Not a ways to go - kid just needs to learn control and he's there. He seems like he is more powerful than Vader but his inner turmoil prevents him from really progressing.
His level of hatred is grossly displayed far more prominently than Vader's when he gets pissed. Every swing he makes with his saber has an element of straight up murderer behind it. Vader didn't fight that way in any of the 3 films. That could just be the choreography but Kylo seems more evil, at this point. Vader couldn't being himself to kill his own blood but Kylo straight up went with deceit to kill Han.
I think Kylo has the potential to be far worse. He is just very rough where it counts but I think killing his father helped release some of that weight like "fuck it, its done. Can't go back" kinda attitude.

He had about 3 lines.
But they all signed a multi parts contracts anyway so they were talking about future movies too.
Also, Kylo is getting a redemption storyline. They didn't alter the murder scene for nothing. Went from cold blooded murderer to lost boy torn apart making a bad choice.
