I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the reaction but that's truly not the case.

For the sake of discussion I might try to do some counterpoint stuff with your post (once I get out of work and have more time lol). Some of the stuff feels like you might have missed something watching the movie, other stuff I think is a little weak to complain about because it's stuff you can apply to any Star Wars movie.

Also, am I blind or was this scene below not in the movie? My son said it was, but I don't remember seeing it:

It definitely wasn't. Not the "angry walking/lightsaber turning on" part.

Also: i love how Poe used the line "While there's still light, we have a chance" (talking about when the superweapon would be charged)

But this perfectly matched the Han Solo / Kylo Ren confrontation.
- Ren: "Will you help me?"
- Han: "Yes, anything"
Ren goes on to drop his helm, lower his sword and offer it to Han Solo, his hands open.
Han Solo grabs the sword.
The camera looks at Rey and Finn. They look outside. We see the sun going dark. There's no more light...
This is where Kylo Ren starts grabbing the sword, trying to point it towards Han Solo's chest.

Really liked the way that played out.

I noticed that too. It was pretty obvious Han was going to die there anyway, but as soon as the light stopped shining on Kylo, you knew it was over for Han.

I'm not sure why they're doing a Han Solo film. Boba Fett, sure, on-screen there's plenty to explore.
But it's not like Harrison Ford was all that old in ANH, to have a younger actor Han would have to be like, 18 at the most, otherwise it just looks like you recast Han.

What's he going to do at that age that's worth a whole film?

Romcom in the SW universe

DO IT DISNEY

So, something I couldn't figure out, are they building a romance between Rey and Finn? I feel like I'd prefer them not doing that
no, they aren't. people seem to want them to, but they aren't.

kiss on the forehead. "good bye, my friend". that's what i'd do to my best friend if he was in a coma.
wait a second. That's what i DID to a very good friend of mine before he passed away. shit.

If they wanted to show that there's a romantic spark, there would have been no better moment than kissing the (possibly mortally wounded) 'love interest' on the lips, while he's still breathing, at least.

Holyfuuuuuck!! I loved this so much! I need to see it again stat! I pretty much loved the entire movie start to finish. That Kylo/Rey duel was so great. The only thing that I was annoyed by was that the my boys from the Raid just seemed wasted. It was cool to see them, but dammit use their skills JJ!!!

No, I never saw that scene. At least, not from that angle anyway. I don't mind that being a trailer exclusive money shot.

I thought so, but wow! I'm really surprised they didn't use this shot. It's fucking incredible. I wonder why they cut it out.

I think they just shot some stuff specifically for the teaser. Boyega said when they were shooting the stand up in the desert they knew on the day it was the first shot of the teaser and it was way shorter in the movie. Also, the scene where Rey looks panicked on the speeder magnum was cut. I guess they just wanted a mysterious badass villain shot that would get people talking, which is why he has his hood up too.

Eh, I think they just didn't want to push this too far in the first movie. There were several scenes already that pushed the idea of some spark between them.

Seen it. It was great i love Kylo Ren the character and the actor. If i have to say something i didnt like it would be another Death Star esque weapon but hey.

fuck I want to rewatch the movie just for the sequence where the starkiller shoots and destroys all these planets, it was so gorgeous
Me too. Really surprised some thought that sequence lacked impact. The shot of the people looking up at the energy blasts hitting the moon and closing in on them.. horrifying. Yet gorgeous at the same time.

Ok. At least your giving me a response with substance.

I've been listening to the score since last night, while I don't quite think it's on par with the OT, this is a standout, the sense of mysticism, adventure and mystery at 2:00 minutes in is great, and gets me very hyped for VIII.

There were quite a few scenes in the trailer that weren't in the movie. No doubt they will be in the Blu-Ray/DVD as a deleted scene.

I think so too. They destroyed any notion of romance, at least until the end of Episode 8/Episode 9, because Rey is now going full Jedi. Maybe Finn will have a new love interest in episode 8, and Rey returning would instil strange feelings in both, resulting in them both realising their feelings for each other were born out of circumstance (both never having had family) more than anything.

This is where Kylo Ren starts grabbing the sword, trying to point it towards Han Solo's chest.

By the way, I liked how it was shown several times why Kylo Ren's cross-shaped lightsaber is practical. Remember how everyone mocked it when it was shown in the teaser? Well, I have to say it was actually way more practical than now-iconic dual lightsabers.

Man, I don't know why, but Han's death has made me even less interested in seeing a prequel film about him.

scust at disney's handling of this franchise already.

they have a giant gap of 30 years to fill up with whatever they want and instead they decide to do freaking Star Wars Origins: Han Solo and Star Wars Origins: Boba Fett

good luck to the poor kid who has to fill harrison ford's shoes too.

Also, what the hell is Snoke? Where'd he come from?

I like the unanswered questions all over this thing. And it seems that there's a whole other small group of Boba Fetts this time. Not just Brienne of Darth.

It seems like the first act of a trilogy has someone die by a lightsaber, much like someone losing a hand in the second act (though that remains to be seen in the next movie).

Phantom Menace? Qui-gon Jinn by Darth Maul.
A New Hope? Obi-wan by Darth Vader.
This? Han Solo by his own son!

It's always a mentor figure, to really hammer down that the trilogy is about the new generation.

The hand is the bad-beat of middle entry. I don't think it will necessarily come in a hand this time, but I don't expect Luke to make it to the end of the trilogy.

Also, what the hell is Snoke? Where'd he come from?

Musical queues hint that he might be Darth Plagueis, Palpatine's mentor. He's not going with the full Sith & apprentice thing after his last apprentice nearly (or maybe even did) kill him.

oh, also, to those #teamMiddleFinger.

I actually forgot about the fact that BB8 is giving the thumbs up as an answer to Finn giving him the thumbs up. Why in hell would he be giving him the middle finger?

also, that's Obiwan saying "Rey" alright.

yeah, the whole shot before with every faction seeing it from afar...

I couldn't hold it, shivers

Regarding the map, is it ever said that Luke created it? The opening crawl says they suspect Luke went to the first Jedi temple, so perhaps the maps are just gathered clues on where exactly that is?

Oh, I was also glad they had lightsaber injuries that weren't straight up limb choppings.

Maybe it's cuz I was sitting very close to the screen, but were there a LOT of extreme close ups in this movie or am I tripping?

And there are a LOT of big ass noses in this movie.

I'd love for them to try and explain how a powerful being like Snoke has not gotten any mention all these years if it's a completely new villain. If Snoke is indeed Plagueis behind the scenes, then that would be more than acceptable to me.

Honestly can't stand the movie cliche where something happens with a married couple's child and the woman leaves the man or the man leaves because the father reminds the wife of the son. So stupid

oh, also, i Kylo Ren TOTALLY reminds me of the of the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie, whenever he freaks out in rage.

This movie had a number of shots that are up there amongst the most beautiful in the SW series.

My favorite possibly being the Tie Fighters against the setting sun. I was also in love with every scene of Rey alone on Jakku.

Two thoughts on the credits. First, it's a great film. Second, boy do I feel foolish for going all out to avoid spoilers. Not that surprise is a metric for quality or anything, but TFA is blunt with its telegraphing. Rey using the lightsaber is about the only curve that comes to mind.

Although, after saying it is it hypocritical to ask if there's a theory on Max von Sydow's character?

I'd say I am mildly satisfied with the movie. While I am all for fan service I did feel that it was handled poorly often times and kind of hokey in a not charming way. Along with some other nitpicks and yet again recycled plot points, it was still a solid movie. Maybe a 7 out of 10 experience overall but I like where the potential is going and imagine an 8 and 9 could be viewed as much better (and this one being elevated for the setup)

It did wash away the blandness and sterile feeling of the prequel movies however, and for that it is an overall success.

It seems to be a Map with specific locations marked with the one hidden section. Kylo mentions they have all of the map except that part from the Old Imperial Archives.

Sort of looks like it could be a map of old Jedi Temple locations perhaps. Palpatine was big on relics of the force. Luke may have gotten the map from the archives and removed the key section.

That was how I understood it too. It wasn't so much a map to Luke, but a map to the first Jedi temple where Luke was hiding. Otherwise, how else do you explain the Empire having a near complete map to Luke's location in their archive? Kylo Ren explicitly states as much in the film. The Emperor would surely have interest in the first Jedi temple.
