Could got wedged in the vent

Q37Q1sa.gif

And that's assuming it went into the same vent! There were many.

I thought Kylo Ren was a weak point when I saw it this morning but you guys are good at convincing me that he wasn't that bad. I feel like I will appreciate it more on my second viewing.

I didn't have a problem with Ren at all.

Did you go in thinking he would be like Vader?

I think as the movie goes on you can see that he is a flawed character that hasn't reached his potential yet.

I did not expect them to show Kylo Ren's face so early and when they did I'll admit I was disappointed. I didn't think he could pull off being a cool villain and by the end I was completely wrong. So glad he turned out to be a cool villain that wasn't just Vader 2.0.

JJ did good at bringing unexpected twists. I did not see Rey having a duel with Kylo coming and it was GLORIOUS. I also liked Phasma being used sparingly in this movie. Interested to see how she does in Episode VIII.

Is it possible Rey has been to the first Jedi Temple before? When Kylo was interrogating her, he alluded to seeing an ocean and then an island in her mind. I don't believe it can be explained as simply part of her force vision, as there would be no reason for us as the audience not to see it. We wouldn't understand it's significant until the end of the film. It makes me think that Rey was left on Jakku because she knew more about Luke and his location that she realised. To protect her and Luke. I think it also adds credence to there being a greater connection between Luke and Rey. Maybe she was his apprentice?

Yeah it pretty much confirms she's connected to Luke in some way. I'd assume his daughter, but maybe not, maybe someone else's he was planning to train.

There is something between them all. Han gets the biggest case of guilt face when she sees all the green on Maz's planet and comments she never knew so much green could exist in the galaxy.

I imagine so, a lot of people are easily sucked in by hype (see episode 1 initially being the best movie ever, and now some kind of horrible abomination). I liked the movie enough back when it hit, and still find it relatively alright, but never loved it. Hype doesn't effect me as much (but does somewhat), legitimate story telling and the overall craft of the movie is what I judge in the end, and a lot of the pacing and reuse of plots/fan service will definitely be bashed on in the coming years. I'd even say that it will be so much so that it might become a 'bad' movie to many when in reality it's still pretty good, just heavily flawed, like Jedi.

Still, it wasn't all I hoped it would be, and I hate to say but the Star Trek reboot was overall better to me, but I enjoyed it enough that i'd watch it again am excited to see where they go with it.

People thought Episode 1 was an abomination from day one.

Just the way Han offered her a job was unusual, he seemed to know more about her than he let on. Leia the same.

If you like him, why are you trying to make him cry? :)

If George Lucas were responsible for the BB8 lighter thumbs up, people would probably hate it. It was about as dumb as something he'd come up with.

I know I probably shouldn't apply real science to Star Wars (or JJ Abrams movies), but how is this laser supposed to work?

It's a giant beam that travels from Starkiller to the other solar system.

if it's a giant beam, then that means it can only travel at the speed of light.

If it can only travel at the speed of light, wouldn't it take hundreds of light years to reach the other solar system?

Shouldn't they be sending the beam through hyperspace or something?

I realize Star Wars sucks with science, but this seems to violate Star Wars own pseudo-scientific laws.

Also, it's moving pretty slow in this picture.

I thought they mentioned that it fired through hyperspace. It's the only way it can fire at other star systems. I'm also going to assume that that's how it can essentially be seen through, apparently, space and time in other solar systems that it isn't even targeting.

Honestly the Starkiller base is probably one of the biggest physics/science messes in all of Star Wars.

It absorbs the power of a whole sun in order to fire. Just think about that. 1.3 MILLION earths can fit inside the sun, according to google. The absorption of that much mass into an earth size planet makes no sense. Also the shear amount of raw materials needed to outfit a planet with continent sized modifications is bananas. It kinda breaks my suspension of disbelief if I think about it. Even more than the Death Stars. At least the Empire controlled the Galaxy. We have no idea how much of the galaxy the First Order controls and how they could have those kind of resources.

R2D2 suddenly had rockets and could fly in episode 2.

Fuck the prequels.

To address your quesiton, context matters. George Lucas made shit movies with bad writing, editing, bad characters, bad everything, and overloaded with stupid shit. If he made a good movie and had silly shit a couple times, it'd be fine. Context.

Can we talk about the absolute waste of the Raid-characters? What was the fucking point if they can't do some martial arts?
I'm putting my hopes into either a role in the sequel or a deleted scenes because I too see little logic in Abrams going out of his way to put them in a CGI monster horror sequence where all they do is run.
Oh man go finish it! I am long overdue for a replay myself
Haha my mate's dad brought it up actually before we went to watch this, I may have to give it another go these holidays.

Just watched it! I feel it did a good job mixing the old with the new. I felt Rey(?) and Han complemented each other well. Everyone was very well cast, though I think BB-88 is probably my favourite new character if not just for the "Hollywood magic" of having the droid roll around. I think his design is better than both C-3PO and R2-D2's. The sets and effects were also excellent. Everything felt so alive and grounded due to the use of many practical sets. Going back to the characters, now that I think of it I think they nailed the look of everyone. From Fynn to Kylo Ren it was all superb.

lol

Wrong. I think the closest this game to PT hijinks with BB8 was the little grapple shots he can shoot out in 4-5 directions. However, the more I thought about it, the more that makes sense for something that's completely round and might need to "stabilize" itself in certain environments.

Lighter thumbs up was fantastic--one of the biggest laughs in the movie. TFA, by far, had the most jokes in the series and the most that actually worked.

Luke's ESB lightsaber fell down that shafty thing and below that is just clouds and nothingness. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't cloud city hovering over a gas planet?

How anyone found his lightsaber I find baffling.
Cloud City is a gas mine. Presumably there's some kind of mining or pumping hardware to bring the gas up at the bottom. I mean why would you build a city above a gas giant with a completely pointless bottomless pit down the middle?

Plus there are thousands of vents and things like the one that Luke was sucked into. Could easily have got pulled into one of those and ended up somewhere retrievable.

So do we know what the "Awakens" part of o the title or the "Awakening" line is referring to? Is it just Rey coming into the Force? Doesn't seem like that should be *too* big a deal when there are clearly other force users even if it's still incredibly rare.

In this case, telegraphing Han Solo's death with dialogue and cinematography was a far better choice than just killing him out of nowhere. This is Star Wars, everything is big and heightened and dramatic.

Some people dismiss it by saying "I saw it coming a mile away" when that's the whole point. As soon as he stepped on that bridge I knew he was a goner. You feel helpless knowing what's going to happen, yet being powerless to stop it.

Yep, the moment he stepped out on that bridge, I was like "this is suitably Star Wars for this moment."

Plus, c'mon- we all pretty much know Han was going to buy it the moment Ford was announced for the cast and doubly so when previews made it clear that he was going to be by far the majority presence of the original cast.

It could have got stuck in any vent actually...
Do we know what's at the bottom of the main shaft Luke falls in ? Scene never made too much sense to me, I don't know what he was hoping jumping down there

review_lukeskywalkerb7qpgm.jpg

The fight was in a place where many vents were. That also had a connecting shaft that lead outside. Seemed to be triggered by weight or sensor when Luke went on it.

There were probably over 50 of those shafts I have highlighted in yellow. (and obviously it didn't go in the ones I had highlighted. lol)

Scenes I teared up at:

Opening scroll

Finn's friend gets shot

Han and Chewy show up

Rey touches the lightsaber

Maz explains the Force (full on cried)

Han and Leia hug it out

"Ben!" (full on cried)

Chewie's reaction to Han's death

Rey gets the lightsaber

The scene when it switches back to the space battle after a lightsaber fight and everything FEELS SO STAR WARS

I really enjoyed it guys. My favorite scene overall was probably Rey touching the lightsaber.

That's... a lot of crying.

Yeah it pretty much confirms she's connected to Luke in some way. I'd assume his daughter, but maybe not, maybe someone else's he was planning to train.

There's also the fact that Luke's original lightsaber was calling to her. There was no suggestion that it called to Kylo Ren in the film, only Rey.

Poe's exchange with Kylo in the beginning and the BB8's thumbs up were my favorites. They were having a lot of fun with it. Helped give the movie a soul.

dude spoilers
Yeah there are a lot of shafts but what about the bottom ? is it a straight fall on the planet ?

JJ did good at bringing unexpected twists. I did not see Rey having a duel with Kylo coming and it was GLORIOUS.

Yeah, talking about playing it close the vest- they really stuck to the misdirection of the Finn being the potential lightsaber user even to the point of featuring it on the official poster.

So happy I wasn't spoiled- I didn't need spoilers to guess Han was going to die but I was genuinely surprised that Ren was a Solo kid and not Rey.

I wish I was so in touch with my emotions. :)

I felt a bit emotional a few times. Rey's force vision with the lightsaber got me the most, I think.

Just finished it and here are my 2c on how it felt

The good
- The feel. This looked, sounded and plain felt like a Star Wars movie. JJ Abrams must be congratulated on pulling off what Lucas couldn't do with the PT - make a "modern" looking Star Wars movie without ruining the aesthetic. In some ways it feels more like Star Wars than ROTJ.
- The acting. Imho this movie had the strongest performances of any Star Wars movie. Every actor did extremely well with their material with Boyega, Driver and Ford standing out in particular.
- Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. Easily the most interesting character in the movie. We've gotten used to seeing experienced, owerpowered badasses take on green heroes in the OT and the PT. This flips that on its head and has the primary antagonist for the series (I'm pretty sure he's it) start off just as green and immature as the protagonists. We see a definite arc of his character towards the dark side and I'm sure his patricide and subsequent injuries will see him look and act very differently in Ep 8 and 9.
- Finn. I went into the movie expecting a boring, serious "hero" styled after Luke/Anakin. What we got instead was a funny dude who has great chemistry with the other characters and wasn't the predictable "good jedi" archetype.
- Lightsaber Battles The one duel in this movie was the best in the entire series. It managed to combine the cool moves from the PT with the realism of the OT without being OTT or boring.
- The Deaths. None of the primary cast were killed off. This is important because it lets them develop characters like Ren, Poe and Finn in future movies. As for Han, Ford apparently wanted out and the new movies are really about the new characters. Cool as he is it was good to see Han go in a way that developed a major character and story arc.

The bad
- Pacing. This is a common issue I have with a lot of the stuff that comes out these days but the pacing of this movie was poor. There wasn't any time for some quiet exposition or character interaction. It was one set piece after another and it made the movie seem messy.
- Starkiller Base. We could have done without yet another "blow up the Death Star" finale. The overarching plot which was basically the discovery of Rey, the defection of Finn and the reveal of Ben Solo could have been done without the backdrop of a Superweapon blowing up a planet we hadn't even heard about.
- The ships. Sure it was cool to see the Falcon again but other than that we had the same old X Wing/Tie/Star Destroyer selection all over again. It would have been nice to see some completely evolved designs.

Random Thoughts
- I'm pretty confident Kylo Ren is the big bad of Ep 7-9. It might not seem so right now but I'd put money on him killing/usurping Snoke at the end of Ep 8 or early in Ep 9. I'm also sure that unlike Anakin, he will end up being irredeemably evil.
- Snoke is not what he seems. It's possible he's either an AI of some sort or merely a force ghost. Either way I'd expect him to be killed/betrayed by Ren fairly quickly.
- Overall I was pretty happy. It isn't the best movie of the year or even the best Star Wars movie but I think that it turned out as well as could be hoped given the expectations. We have a fantastic platform to build on in Eps 8-9 and I can't wait to see what happens. Star Wars is in good hands.

Did Kylo Ren die or did they manage to save him? The film didn't give the impression that they could get to him in time. I hope they did, otherwise it would be a waste to build up a villain like that only to end up having to start over in the next movie.

Also, when the Millennium Falcon shows up to pick up Rey and Finn and you briefly forget that Han is no more and is instantly reminded because Chewie is the only one in the cockpit.... damn! :(

Ehm, starting to think I may have spoke to soon when I said the ost was disappointing. I'm listening to a few tracks now, and wow... Rey's theme is incredible.

If George Lucas were responsible for the BB8 lighter thumbs up, people would probably hate it. It was about as dumb as something he'd come up with.

Nah it was great. Got big laughs. Unfortunately a lot of Finn's comedy fell flat for me

What's the musical cue that plays when Rey force grabs the saber in the duel? That shit was HYPE

- The ships. Sure it was cool to see the Falcon again but other than that we had the same old X Wing/Tie/Star Destroyer selection all over again. It would have been nice to see some completely evolved designs.
Gotta agree with this one. People may poop all over the PTs but at least we had some new ships, even if some of those underscored that they were going to evolve into what we were going to see in the OT. I know you shouldn't fix something that isn't broken, but in 30 years, there wasn't some new design beyond a rear-gunner seat for the TIE Fighters?

Merchandise Damage Report

- Star Wars: Aftermath hardcover
- Star Wars: Shattered Empire comic
- TFA The Visual Dictionary
- TFA Incredible Cross-Sections
- Lego Star Wars First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter

I heard a guy ask his friends on the way out, "Why didn't Luke just shoot her with his blaster??"

I don't think he really understood what he was watching.

The rebellion never had too much money, empire got blown up, I think they had other priorities than R&D
X wing got a new version too

Saw a grown man in tears leaving the theater. A group of guys coming in for the next showing see him and stop in their tracks. One of them is like, "Aww, fuck!"

Gave me good chuckle. Movie was great!
