So Rey is obviously going to be Luke's daughter.

Really enjoyed the film, love BB-8.

Kylo Ren twist was good as well.

Can't wait for the next one.

I felt it served its purpose well. It forced Han Solo to leave his ship behind for the Millenium Falcon and put himself in the thick of things again.
It was also just a fun, goofy sequence. I don't know, a bit like the trash-compactor scene in ANH or the asteroid-field monster thing in ESB.
I also loved the moment when Finn is saved and goes "the door came down on it!" and Rey just says "that was lucky!". Just another nice little character moment for Rey.

The freighter scene was the low point of the movie for me. I still want to know how they got the lightsaber. Beyond that, I really like the movie. It certainly had a different tone than the other movies, but it is Star Wars. Yeah, it felt a bit too much like A New Hope, and even a bit of Knights of the Old Republic, but I'm excited about where Episode VIII will go.

Saw a grown man in tears leaving the theater. A group of guys coming in for the next showing see him and stop in their tracks. One of them is like, "Aww, fuck!"

Gave me good chuckle. Movie was great!

only in Star Wars... lol

Maybe we'll get a Dooku-Maul training scene like in Clone Wars, but Ren actually kills and usurps his master

Given that the Skywalker line seems to be the most powerful Force users, a fully trained Ren will probably be Snoke's downfall. Don't belittle the guy who snaps like that

I'm eagerly awaiting Kylo's Elle Driver-Pai Mei moment

Ehm, starting to think I may have spoke to soon when I said the ost was disappointing. I'm listening to a few tracks now, and wow... Rey's theme is incredible.

The soundtrack is pretty good. Its lacking probably in the fact there is not one really defining piece like we had seen prior.

As soon as Snoke appeared on-screen I remember thinking "geez I hope they replace him with a real human in a future release of the film". Awful CG and completely out of place with the rest of the film.

Luke's ESB lightsaber fell down that shafty thing and below that is just clouds and nothingness. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't cloud city hovering over a gas planet?

How anyone found his lightsaber I find baffling.

It's quite simple.

For starters, it didn't fall outside of Cloud City. It fell into one of the apartments within Cloud City, this one belonging to an Ithorian named B'ellput Cretaau, who found it while cleaning the balcony of his apartment. Obviously, since the Jedi had been dead for a few decades he wasn't exactly sure what he had but figured it might be of some value. This of course would be good news for him since he was under no hurry to live under Imperial rule in Cloud City. After packing away his belongings and his new found lightsaber he headed to a new world that would perhaps be away from the eye of the Empire, a dusty old back water planet.

Now, from there he pawned the lightsaber for 500 creds and some power converters for the moisture farm business he was setting up, this pawn broker being a big fat alien named Obesie Hambager. Now, him being a junk dealer of all kinds of rare artifacts knew exactly what he was looking at and it's true value when he grifted it from the Ithorian at a fraction of the cost. However, at this time the Empire still had ta strong presence in his system and dealing in Jedi artifacts, especially as the Rebellion was ongoing, could prove dangerous to one's health so he knew he had to calmly ask around his contacts for a buyer.

As luck would have it a wealthy Bothan business man named Mannubothan Di'ed was becoming quite the collector of Jedi artifacts since the Fall of the Jedi Temple, but due to the strict customs inspections of the Empire for all things Jedi, he had not yet gotten his hands on a authentic working lightsaber. Mannubothan contacted the Obesie to setup a buy and agreed with Obesie that the deal should take place aboard his hauling vessel "The Parsec Runner." Of course, what Mannubothan didn't realize is that Obesie ran a side business in the slave trade which had recently been eyed by Maz Kanata and her gang who had reports that some of her people we being kept aboard the ship.

As the meeting was going down Maz's forced boarded the ship and both Obesie and sadly Mannubothan were killed in the exchange of gunfire as Maz freed the slaves. While rummaging through the corpses she noticed an odd object in the hands of the fat alien and immediately recognized it as a lightsaber. She then held onto the object for a few years until the defeat of the Empire when a chance meeting with Luke Skywalker allowed her to present him with his old lightsaber. However, Luke, ever gracious told her to hold on to it as he believed a new owner would one day claim the saber for themselves.

it's safe in its form but they still kill han
Weak though ? lol fuck that noise, it's a great start

It's unsafe to kill a character who serves no purpose in this new franchise beyond this first film, whose role was slotted to exactly that as Old Ben Kenobi, and whose actor has personally asked since the first movie that his character be killed off and probably wouldn't have signed on if his character was kept alive for further movies?

The fight was in a place where many vents were. That also had a connecting shaft that lead outside. Seemed to be triggered by weight or sensor when Luke went on it.

There were probably over 50 of those shafts I have highlighted in yellow. (and obviously it didn't go in the ones I had highlighted. lol)

But when he exits and is hanging on the antenna. he sees a small object falling toward the planet, which is presumably his hand and saber. Possible that it became separated in the falling and picked up later though.

Absolutely! The film had so many little character moments that helped make Finn and Rey so likeable.

Yeah, that's how I always saw that, but I guess I am not 100% positive that that's what it was.

So do we know what the "Awakens" part of o the title or the "Awakening" line is referring to? Is it just Rey coming into the Force? Doesn't seem like that should be *too* big a deal when there are clearly other force users even if it's still incredibly rare.

Yep, the moment he stepped out on that bridge, I was like "this is suitably Star Wars for this moment."

Plus, c'mon- we all pretty much know Han was going to buy it the moment Ford was announced for the cast and doubly so when previews made it clear that he was going to be by far the majority presence of the original cast.

I think it was pretty telegraphed the moment that Kylo was obviously letting Han follow him. Dude was able to sense his presence, think he wasn't gonna feel his father following him ten feet behind?

Gotta agree with this one. People may poop all over the PTs but at least we had some new ships, even if some of those underscored that they were going to evolve into what we were going to see in the OT. I know you shouldn't fix something that isn't broken, but in 30 years, there wasn't some new design beyond a rear-gunner seat for the TIE Fighters?

More than anything else it made the galaxy seem smaller. According to this movie, we have a stub republic and a stub empire fighting over a handful of systems with 30 year old tech when they can clearly afford to convert an entire planet into a bigger Death Star. It just feels weak.

I wish I was so in touch with my emotions. :)

I felt a bit emotional a few times. Rey's force vision with the lightsaber got me the most, I think.

Haha I'm an emotional dude. I cry a lot in movies.

Mostly just teared up or choked up though aside from the Ben and Maz moments.

For those it was these two things that did it:

Maz explaining the Force spoke to me on this deep level that was squelched by the prequels. Suddenly the force has life and meaning again. Yoda talking about the force has always been the money I tear up in the OT and this brought that moment back to me.

The "Ben!" moment impacted me emotionally because it implies so much to me about Han and Leia. 1.) It implies their expectations for their son as the person he was named after was Leia's "only hope". Kylo represents the shattered hopes and dreams of Han and Leia after all the work they put into defeating them Empire. 2.) Han named his son "Ben" after a man he disrespected and even mocked, but obviously came to respect and thank for setting him on a new path that led to... Meeting the love of his life and having his son.

There is such an element of tragedy to and it connects back to the OT so seamlessly. And it all happens in just a moment. Once again, more is shown than said.

Lukes hand/saber fell way before he actually let go to fall down himself. (Remember there was dialogue with Vader) So I believe it wasn't the saber. It doesn't look silver in 1080p Blu-ray, looks fleshly only.

I didn't have a problem with Ren at all.

Did you go in thinking he would be like Vader?

I think as the movie goes on you can see that he is a flawed character that hasn't reached his potential yet.

What didn't you like about Ren?

I'm not really sure anymore. He felt weak and really didn't look like a vilain but now I see that's the reason why I should like him. They showed a lof of potential by the end. I cried that the film was too much like A New Hope and then I wanted a dude like Vader? Yeah now that I really think about it, I think they handled it pretty well.

I'll need a second viewing to really let everything sink in, but I had a great time either way.

I was tense the whole Han death scene even though I read spoilers. I was a bit teary eyed.

So Finn isn't Force sensetive right. It felt like the film left enough hints either way.

I still want to know how they got the lightsaber.
Now that I think of this, Vader's mask and lightsaber actually should have ended up in opposite hands. The Empire was in full control of Cloud City and could have sent a search crew to retrieve the lightsaber, but Vader's mask was being charred in a bonfire near a Rebellion party. It all leads me to ask how the lightsaber ended up in the hands of a person with connections to the good guys and the mask in the hands of the First Order.

If George Lucas were responsible for the BB8 lighter thumbs up, people would probably hate it. It was about as dumb as something he'd come up with.

i disagree. There's a difference between something charming, like giving a ball shaped robot some personality.

And some big, in your face obnoxious loud alien stepping in poopie, showing no manners and generally being useless.

I think it was equally cute as Baymax's fist bump

Anyone read/buy the novel?

Should we assume that it's word of god, or that there are some distinctions?

Apparently, it does fill in some gaps and answers some questions (Finn is definitely in a coma for instance).

Do people really need the full story of how they got the lightsaber? They just did. Not everything needs to be explained in detail.

After reading s bunch of stuff here I'm convinced the OT pandering and references are easily the worst aspects to the movie. Hopefully the next ones will stray away from those tropes more.

But the execution of the Star Wars template was good and I guess that's what matters.

I imagine so, a lot of people are easily sucked in by hype (see episode 1 initially being the best movie ever, and now some kind of horrible abomination). I liked the movie enough back when it hit, and still find it relatively alright, but never loved it. Hype doesn't effect me as much (but does somewhat), legitimate story telling and the overall craft of the movie is what I judge in the end, and a lot of the pacing and reuse of plots/fan service will definitely be bashed on in the coming years. I'd even say that it will be so much so that it might become a 'bad' movie to many when in reality it's still pretty good, just heavily flawed, like Jedi.

Still, it wasn't all I hoped it would be, and I hate to say but the Star Trek reboot was overall better to me, but I enjoyed it enough that i'd watch it again am excited to see where they go with it.

See I do get seriously hyped for things, I was hyped to the moon for this movie after the trailer but hype has never had an effect on my judgment of a product. At the end of the day when I see a movie or play a game the hype vanishes and I can only judge it as its product, for better or worse. Like do you think I want to be let down by a SW film or a new MGS game? Shit, I wish I could make my brain think they were mastahpieces, but they aren't.

also, Maz Kanata says "that's a story for another time"

there's a story, ... be patient you guys
it wasn't relevant to this movie, how EXACTLY she got that saber.

As soon as Snoke appeared on-screen I remember thinking "geez I hope they replace him with a real human in a future release of the film". Awful CG and completely out of place with the rest of the film.
They can still salvage it if they just use a real costume for the in-person Snoke and leave this CG version as a hologram. I was relieved when the Snoke we saw was revealed to be a holo, because man that did not look very good at all.

It was also just a fun, goofy sequence. I don't know, a bit like the trash-compactor scene in ANH or the asteroid-field monster thing in ESB.

Dammit, was this another subtle use of the Force by Rey, like when she couldn't explain all the crazy shit she did with the Falcon?

Wasn't the whole point of bringing in Andy Serkis because Snoke was going to be a mocap character? He's gonna continue being CG.

I wish MGSV had made me feel the same way that TFA did.

I'm hoping its because he was a hologram and that's just how they look now. Maybe they could add some scanlines or something. Or just make them blue again.

This movie didn't pass the Davy Jones test, and it's almost 2016 :p

maybe I remember Davy Jones with rose-tinted glasses or something.

That's not how that works, Daffy.

Weeeeeeell...

You're definitely half-right: the movie really could have used more original ideas, in terms of its structure and writing.

However, in terms of character, I love everything they did, especially Kylo. I think it might have been here or an article I read, but he's a stand-in for Vader that basically wants to be a stand-in for Vader, but he's clearly not on Vader's level. I really like the conflict there.
