[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

Now that I think of this, Vader's mask and lightsaber actually should have ended up in opposite hands. The Empire was in full control of Cloud City and could have sent a search crew to retrieve the lightsaber, but Vader's mask was being charred in a bonfire near a Rebellion party. It all leads me to ask how the lightsaber ended up in the hands of a person with connections to the good guys and the mask in the hands of the First Order.

In the Aftermath novel it's suggested there's a group of collectors (possibly the Knights of Ren) who are paying top dollar for anything that potentially belonged to Vader.

also, Maz Kanata says "that's a story for another time"

there's a story, ... be patient you guys
it wasn't relevant to this movie, how EXACTLY she got that saber.

Yeah, it would serve no purpose to the movie. Doesn't impact the story at all.

There will probably be some expanded universe stuff about it. But hopefully they keep that stuff away from movies, doesn't serve any narrative purpose.

Am I the only one who found Adam Driver's performance kind of weird when he is not wearing the mask? It was sort of meh to me and yet everyone is happy and praising his performance. What am I missing?

Ehm, starting to think I may have spoke to soon when I said the ost was disappointing. I'm listening to a few tracks now, and wow... Rey's theme is incredible.

The mix was really poor in my theater so the only thing that stood out were the familiar themes because I was already used to them. But, yeah, listenting to the soundtrack is giving me more of an appreciation for the score.

The Art of The Force Awakens has some real interesting shit in it.

Just flipping through it now, they storyboarded an opening that was straight up the opening of Star Wars - the reveal was that Finn (who looks like Young Han Solo), Chewie & Artoo were flying a pair of Tugboats that were hauling the giant star destroyer, and you'd see it crash to the desert and get scavenged.

do it, the second time around is even better. You can focus on the great stuff and you're not overwhelmed by some of the story 'noise'

I enjoyed it so much more the second time around. The first time I was overwhelmed by the fact that I was seeing Star Wars on the big screen again.

we had enough of badass overconfident villains who underestimate their opponents.
kylo is insecure and emotional. he is a darksider tempted by the light side, as opposed to the trope that the jedi is seduced by the dark side.

What didn't you like about it?

I thought it was great. Everything from his voice to his delivery. He could have gone full Hayden but he was able to modulate the performance and be a lot more subtle when he needed to.

Thanks for this. Didn't plan on reading Aftermath (due to the negative reviews). Provides a bit more insight.

Lukes hand/saber fell way before he actually let go to fall down himself. (Remember there was dialogue with Vader) So I believe it wasn't the saber. It doesn't look silver in 1080p Blu-ray, looks fleshly only.

Right, but I assumed the doors triggered in intervals allowing him to catch a glimpse of it.

Now, at the time of ESB I think its reasonable to assume the object was the saber in his hand, punctuating Luke's failure. I mean unless Kershner or Lucas had something else planned, I think that is what they were going for. That and high def wasn't a thing then.

But, this can easily be altered to suggest the saber didn't fall into Bespin, just his hand, which is where I think it will go. As far as retcons go, its pretty clean, the more I think about it.

I though it was effectively conveyed that he was hiding behind the mask to seem badass, but really he didn't have his shit together at all and wasn't cool and confident like vader was

I felt this way also. When he took the mask out I almost yelled: "Pussy!" He looked like a weakling without the mask. Now when he had the mask he looked like quite a badass.

Wow. It never crossed my mind as being a reflection of his skin color. He's a n00b stormtrooper which is why in his first real battle, he's questioning his conditioning. His skin color isn't a reflection on that. As to what he was doing before his first battle, I saw sanitation as a joke to contrast with his claim that he knew how to bring down the planet weapon. Again, nothing to do with skin color. The incompetency is due to the idea that stormtroopers shouldn't think for themselves, ideally. He's been trained not to think, so he's still picking it up. Frankly, he moves pretty far from being a braindead stormtrooper to competently fighting the lead enemy in the story with a lightsaber, and he's not even force-aware (apparently). All of which has absolutely zero to do with his skin color.

I mean, this is why people of color and women are essential behind the camera too. You can represent them with actors, but a bunch of white men sitting around a room aren't going to think twice about something like that. Wcich isn't evil or anything, it just was it is.

I liked him, he was wildly different to what I thought he would look like though, not the bad ass power house I was expecting, but a child wanting to be all powerful and top Vader.

When he killed Han I couldn't help but think, 20 points Slytherin.

I liked the switch from Darth Vader-esque menace to actually looking and moving kind of awkward. There were some shots of him after his first scene without the mask that made him look kind of gangly and awkward. I got a kick out of it.

Did they re-use the opening title (as in, the very opening "STAR WARS") from the original films? It looked kind of filmy and grainy if I remember correctly.

I had to take a pee break in my viewing, right when Ren unmasked himself for the first time.....come back to find some dude interrogating Rey. I'm like "who the fuck is that?" lol

He wasn't supposed to be badass all the time, that's the point. He's still very insecure and not fully trained.

I could see them bringing Phasma back again as a foil for Finn.

- The ships. Sure it was cool to see the Falcon again but other than that we had the same old X Wing/Tie/Star Destroyer selection all over again. It would have been nice to see some completely evolved designs.

And there were no A-wings/Y-wings. Inexcusable when one of the main plot points is executing a bombing run.

Aftermath's alright. Looking forward to the sequel as there are a couple of nice ending hooks.

The way is HAS to go man. It's in Ep7!!! It's not for debate! /slamsdoor

Just messin with ya.

I was tense the whole Han death scene even though I read spoilers. I was a bit teary eyed.

So Finn isn't Force sensetive right. It felt like the film left enough hints either way.

Finn being force sensitive could explain why his brainwashing since childhood failed, the force woke him up.

My pee break was between Finn conversing with the dudes to get him to the outer rim and the first thing I saw when I came back into the theater was Rey opening the lightsaber box.

So I don't THINK I missed anything important. Probably as good a pee break spot as I could get. Anyone wanna fill me in on how Rey knows about the saber though?

yeah, he uses the mask to appear more menacing than he actually is.

People complaining about Kylo Ren being "an angsty teen without his mask", that's the intention of the way he was portrayed.
