Anybody else got the vibe that Poe might be gay? The way he bites his lip at Finn when he tells him to keep the Jacket cause it suits him or whatever.

I don't know man, but I do know that in all of the shots where John Boyega was close to the camera all I could focus on was his incredibly perfect and completely unblemished skin. I just wanted to gently stroke him.

I can't wait to see this again. I can't say that about any other movie I've seen in the past 2 years. Even Mad Max.

I loved Fury Road too and accept that, overall, might be a better movie (ok, it IS), saw it two times at the theaters and might just watch it once more in a few months time, but I'm not left with that big desire to watch it again and again like TFA.

Crazy question..

Could Darth Vader who Anakin had finally defeated (by turning against the dark side) still be alive in ghost form? Much like dead Jedi's who can communicate with the living via being one with the force.

If so, could Ren be communicating with ghost form Vader?

Tom Francis is a smart guy who makes great games but is also a good writer (from a previous life as... a writer), I feel like he captures his thoughts on the film (which are similar to mine) well in this blog post:
It alternates a bit between three different ways you could approach making a Star Wars sequel:

  • Nostalgia Trip: the same characters come back and do the same things but 30 years older.
  • Mimic: new characters who are curiously similar to old ones, facing a curiously similar configuration of curiously similar enemies with a curiously similar threat, which they resolve with a curiously similar plan.
  • New Story: new characters that occupy new roles in the familiar world, using them to explore new corners of it and create new situations and conflicts.
As you can probably tell from my phrasing, I like it best when it’s doing New Story stuff. A whole film of that would turn me full fanboy. As it is, the new stuff is still central enough that it kept me excited throughout.

Adam Driver was second best in show behind Daisy Ridley for me, he really got and understood the pathos of his character, creating someone really unstable with so much raw potential who just wanted more. I would have liked to see his take on Anakin.

Droid has secret info, stranded on sandplanet, runs into the loneliest person on there, this person brings the droid to the rebellion and finds out they're force sensitive. Rebells are about to be destroyed by a big ass laser cannon, but they find out about the one weakness and manage to avoid total destruction by destroying that base through a tiny weakness.

I mean come on. We've all seen A New Hope.

I'm pretty sure having the same basic plot was intentional to kind of make it "old but new at the same time". While the plots mostly the same, the new characters and their interactions with old ones along with the stuff it sets up for the next movies are where the movie shines to me. While the new death star was being blown up, which yeah is kind of ridiculous at this point, the real focus was the scenes with kylo ren, han, rey, finn, and then in my opinion the stuff in the light saber duel at the end was great. Also I liked the direction with luke going into hiding and them having to find him.

Who always the "old ally" at the beginning?

How the fuck did that planet gun reload? It ate a sun, killed the Republic, then... how'd it get a new sun? That thing was dumb.

I don't get the relationship between Empire and Order not between Republic and Resitance.

Maybe it was a binary system? I mean, if you're gonna make a planet that eats stars, probably would make sense to build it in a system with more than one star.

When people say things like "he can't act." How are we supposed to take it seriously? I mean, I'm fine with "I didn't like his acting for x reason." Or "his take on the character wasn't my cup of tea."

But just "can't act" as if the biggest Hollywood movie ever just let a guy from the streets just phone in the main bad guy and didn't say anything...

Same thing when people say something like, "Fallout 4 is garbage..."

So how do you guys personally feel the new trio ranks? I honestly love all of them and can't really decide yet (though I'm leaning towards Finn), but am curious if there is a clear favorite among GAF.

Kylo Ren going berserk was nicely done. The control panel going from a sterile black shot to a warm red/orange with flames all over the place was very well shot.

Huh ? Lol. Odd comparison

I thought it was great. Sure it was safe and rehashed many things from the OT, but it had to be given how much the prequels tarnished the legacy of SW for many people. Finn and especially Rey were great. Loved BB8 too :)

Always fun to come into these kinds of thread and think to myself, "So many terrible opinions in here..."

Only to realize that's the beauty of an opinion, it can't be "wrong" in the traditional sense.

Film was amazing. Only qualm was Carrie Fisher not being the best actress in the world, but they played it well.

The callbacks were essential to inform new viewers of some back story. It would be fun to watch this one first and go back to the OT trilogy and catch what the references were about.

Think he nails my feelings as well. I had no desire to see Han and Leia's old wrinkly faces shoe-horned in and Chewy/droid banter. Story could have worked well with just new characters searching for Luke Skywalker.

Yeah I thought the same, that Vader might still be alive in some way, especially if Snookie really is Plagueis. But the scene where he speaks to him makes it sound almost like a secret talk, and what were Vader's intentions? Whatever they were they supplanted the emperor, so presumably Ren is implying he'll get rid of Snookie and either be done with everything then, or rule in his place.

Yeah, I was very confused at the actual politics at play. Is the entire New Republic gone?

Well, you certainly won't find a majority of nuanced opinion on a mostly anonymous message board where you can post a knee-jerk reaction without ever needing to justify it.

Most people would related "can't act" with "his acting didn't connect with me, I didn't find him believable".

I, however, strongly disagree with that.

Anyone ever figure out where they sources that audio of Alec Guinness saying Rey from? Other than he probably really said Ray in whatever the source was. Lol

Well, Anakin is in ghost form at the end of Return of the Jedi. Anakin is Vader. Even though he went Dark Side he can only be one person/one ghost.

This was the only time I liked Adam Driver in anything.

I liked him in While We're Young, but this was so different (yet somewhat similar) and much better than anything else he's ever done.

I don't remember what he said but my memory of it is that it was pulled from the history lesson he gives Luke in IV, about the Jedi and Empire and so forth.

People in my theater clapped when:

The opening credits + music began playing
Han Solo + Chewie first appeared
R2D2 rebooted
The end credits rolled

Even though I knew it was coming, the Luke reveal was so great. Hamill totally sold an older, hardened Luke with his look and expression

Anyone wish he had shorter hair though, or the longer hair was good?
