If anyone in the movie cant act, it's Rey.

The acting performances were solid all around, in most cases, outstanding. I liked Poe way more than I expected. I know I've said this already, but the guy's charisma and optimism is infectious. He's just the ultimate pal you'd want to have around. He made me happy.

The same thing that led to the destruction of the New Republic in the old continuity: bureaucracy.

In the new timeline, the Republic never wiped out the Imperial remnants and they became the First Order.

I did expect a Republic fleet to show up for the attack on Starkiller Base though.

The Republic/New Republic were also demilitarizing or were already near completion of doing so. Hence why they were probably still fighting with X-Wings and what not.

For real right? I mean like 20 or so x-wing vs the HQ of the FO? Yeesh

I thought the movie all but screamed at us that Rey was Luke's daughter, and after I thought about it I (and others) have also floated the idea that Rey already had some training but it was somehow forgotten or repressed -- This would explain her proficiency with the force and the lightsaber which happened so quickly, and that would also fit well with the title of the movie.

Re. my above point -- The movie was full of subcommunication by the film makers. For instance, when Rey pulled the lightsaber out of the snow just like Luke on Hoth -- That seems like the film makers are communicating something just to us. Pulling a lightsaber out of the snow holds no significance to the characters in the scene, it's something only meant for the audience.

Stuff like the similar trajectory from a desert planet and the lightsaber in the snow and all that can be explained away as circumstantial -- But all of that supports a couple of parts in the movie that more clearly tell us something.

  • 1) The part where the Lightsaber calls out to Rey and gives her visions. That it did this at all is interesting, but, again, could be explained away as other things. However, things go further when Maz describes a lineage going from Anakin to Luke to Rey. I felt like this was near confirmation on its own.
  • 2) What seals the deal is the ending, for me, when Luke looks at Rey with such recognition. That's not the look of someone who's laying eyes on a stranger or someone who doesn't hold special significance to them.

Great post and I agree, the sequence with the "haunted Luke lightsaber" all but confirmed she was a Skywalker.

That was my only real complaint about the movie. She was supposed to be this badass trooper, but her character did nothing other than give up super easy.

She'll be back, we got two more movies coming. More if you count spin offs.

She got tossed in the trash by the Garbagetrooper, safe to say she's fucking pissed.

Here are a few quotes from the novel.. too lazy to type them out

Its a pretty quick read and fleshes out the story quite a bit

And Carrie Fisher but it was the case in the 80's.

She can barely move her mouth it looks like.

Yeah it was pretty serviceable, I just don't understand people picking out Adam Driver. He was easily the most complex character, quite a feat when he is entirely new.

That entire sequence could have been dispensed with to give us a few more "character-driven" moments.

It could have actually been a good opportunity to have an old Bobba Fett back, but maybe that would have been too much fan service. If not, one of the bounty hunters from the old trilogy, even if it would have flown over most people' heads. I'm sure these guys will come back in the next movies, but I felt it was poorly handled in this one. They made the situation sound more complicated than it needed to be.

The relationship (or lack thereof) between the Republic and the Resistance is one that I hope is explored in other media (comics, books).

I get the impression that the Resistance essentially acts as an off-the-books "proxy force" for the Republic in a shadow war against the First Order. They receive limited support from the Republic so the Senate can maintain "plausible deniability".

That's pretty much what Hex guy was saying to the Storm Troopers.

In a film that was concieved and executed as homage as much as it was resetting the table, I don't think having wise words from a force-sensitive mystic echoing in the hero's ears during a climactic moment would have at all felt out of place. Nobody would have blinked.

Would it have been out of place thematically based on SW's legacy? No. But I'm personally glad the "mystic queueing in" device wasn't used this time considering the aforementioned "force sensitive mystic" was a rather poorly animated, awkward and out of place alien bartender and not a Jedi. As I said in a previous post, I didn't like Maz as a character, she felt very out of place. Yes, Maz has knowledge of the Force but how powerful is she? She just seems mildly attuned to the Force to the point she can give a person sincere advice about it but actually being able to talk across space? That seems way out of her league. Unless I'm mistaken, she wasn't even responsible for Rey's force dream in the cellar, that was simply generated by Rey's as of now unexplained connection to the force surrounding Luke's saber.

I loved having Rey just gradually being able to ease into using the Force and having all these quiet epiphanies, I thought it was a great change of pace from the new user always being guided by a second party. Obviously the Force isn't a person, but I loved those scenes so much because it felt like the Force was almost gently guiding her and helping her because it "wanted" her to succeed and almost acting like an adoptive parent of sorts in those moments because she had nobody else to help her. Anyways to each their own of course, but I think that's an edit which made sense and definitely felt right. Enjoy your posts btw, been following them since the days leading up to the release of Prometheus.

The more I think about it, does the Starkiller base serve any point in the plot of this movie? Everything could of happened exactly the same without it. Poe would of still stashed away the map with BB-8, who would of still bumped into Rey. Finn would of still rescued Poe and then bump into Rey. Rey and Finn would of still got chased by the First Order who are seeking out BB-8 and would of escaped in the Falcon, which would of then led to them still bumping into Han. Han would of still taken them to see Kaz, would would of still given them the lightsaber. Rey and BB-8 would still have been recongized by the First Order and Resistance leading them to have a battle at Maz's castle. Kylo would of still kidnapped Rey after realizing she's seen the map. Han and Finn would of still led a rescue mission to save Rey. Kylo would of still killed Han. There would still be a lightsaber duel at the end. Rey would of still been sent off to find Luke.

Starkiller Base is pure filler.

So Ren's hand got cut off in his fight with Rey, right?

Or did my eyes deceive me?

They needed some kind of Battle of Yavin =P

Okay just came back from it FUCKING HELL WHAT A FILM! ! JJ DID IT.

I will say they retold it as Ep 4. a little too much but Goddamn it was nostalgic as fuck. I was literally smiling the whole time.

2 questions: Rey is Ren's sister right? Why is that still a secret? Will it be in episode 8 where they replay the Vader Luke scene except It's Ren saying am I your brother?

I was really saddened by Hans death but man not even a funeral for him??

The ending scene was godlike!!

9.5/10

that kind of looks worth reading to me, thanks for the post. Ren's answer as to why the empire fell is awesome, I wonder if he knows the truth about what happened

Minus the destruction of the New Republic. Its point was to put the First Order in charge.

Is Phasma going to be returning? I mean she really didn't die, they just threw her down a garbage chute. I'm sure she got out.

She's definitely going to be back, but Christ, I fucking hated how Phasma was handled. Probably my biggest gripe easily. I wanted to see Brienne of Tarth do some fucking work! Her letting the shields done so easily, was so fucking weeeaak. So damn cool aesthetically, and doesn't get to do shit. So this must be what Boba fans felt back in the day. . .

Edit: Oh yeah, Yayan Ruhian not really doing anything also sucked.

What if she just knew what to do because of the stories she had heard about the jedi and there's of the force? Like she finds out she is force sensitive so she tries to use it to her advantage. I still think she's Luke's daughter though. Why else would she have the flashbacks?

As far as fighting Kylo, she didn't need to do much as she was already proficient when it came to fighting so the use of the lightsaber was a bit easy. I don't think she was honestly better than kylo, it's just that kylo was injured and being emo.

I thought so too at first, but I made sure to look for it when I saw again. He definitely moves both his hands after he falls down. I'm pretty sure it's still attached. :P I'm not completely certain though.

Who knows. Much like with the marketing for this movie making us thing Finn was the Jedi. I think Rey being related to Ren might just be a distraction, and the real reveal will be something different.

Hold on...

Is this the first Star Wars movie that doesn't have body parts getting cut off by Lightsabers?

Just got back and I straight up loved it. My only complaint is that Rey has no business being that good with The Force. She didn't even believe it was real until she met Han, and suddenly she can do Jedi mind tricks and beat an apprentice of Luke in a duel? Even if she's got Skywalker blood, the highlight of Luke's usage of The Force in ANH was hitting the Death Star's weak spot, and this was with some light tutelage from Obi-Wan. She was also kind of a Mary Sue all around and had not a single flaw that I can think of.

Now that I'm done complaining, I'd like to rave about just how tonally on-point this flick was. Star Wars is in the right hands. Everything looked exactly as it should. I also thought there was a perfect balance of the original cast and the new actors. There was fanservice for sure, but the new leads were clearly the stars of the film. I didn't even mind the reuse of the ANH beats, as it allowed us to get to know these characters within a familiar framework.

Kylo Ren was fantastic, and I had no interest in his character from the trailers. People complaining about him not being intimidating with the helmet off are missing the point. The dude's an insecure Vader fanboy, he straight up wears a mask and modulates his voice on purpose. He throws temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way and doesn't seem to command a ton of respect from the his superiors. He's definitely the most interesting new character to me.

I've got a lot of thoughts right now, but mainly I'd like to say - this movie was really good. I am looking forward to Episode VIII.

And who's voice played when Rey had the flashback it sounded familiar when she sees the ship fly off and somebody is holding her hand?

I agree, my two biggest letdowns were how much of a role Phasma had in the movie and the guys from the Raid doing jack shit. I was probably the only person in the theatre that went "OH SHIT" when they showed up haha

Not even gonna compare this movie to the PT, anything would've been better than that turdfest.

Definitely not as good as the OT though, this movie was pretty much Ep 4 story wise. New characters were great but the story was way too safe. Also I hope Luke's reason to eject wasn't what Ford described...Kylo turned bad, so he pretty much had a nervous breakdown and ran away and let things go to shit. How about recruit some more Jedi?

Anyways, excited to see where they go with everything...the first movie probably had to be safe. Glad to have SW back.

That bothered me at first as well, but after reflecting on everything it bothers me less. Think about the title of the movie -- "The Force Awakens". I think it seems possible that Rey had previous training that was somehow forgotten. But -- Even if she didn't, Kylo was both seriously injured and throwing a big tantrum, and just in general was a bit of a petulant child rather than a master of evil.

See my post here for more of what I (and some others) think about Rey.

The one thing that continues to bother me is Finn's use of the lightsaber, especially to hold his own for a while against Kylo. That bothered me. I don't think a nobody, non-force user should be using a lightsaber in combat. it doesn't fit my 30 years of SW training. It cheapens it.

I also didn't like the whole death star 3 stuff. I thought that didn't need to be in the movie at all -- especially since the movie was already a bit packed.

On the whole though I really liked it, and the movie was great despite some issues based on the strength of its great characters. It feels so good to finally once again have a SW movie with great characters who seem like actual people!
