This was my problem with hux but to a greater extent kylo. Like they took the new kids on the block theme too far. They didn't have to extend it to the villains as well. Should have had older more menacing villains. And Snoke doesn't count because he sucked.

The difference between Kylo and Hux is that the Kylo we were given works perfectly in the story that is told. His role and Driver's performance were one of the stronger highlights for me.

The concept of Han and Leia's son falling to the Dark Side in the pursuit of his grandfather's shadow is inherently compelling. It's an amazing story that I want to see told right and I feel TFA did that, at least for the most part.

Hux is... well, he's just a middle management bad guy. The strength of that role is dependent almost entirely on the actor that fills it. Gleeson just wasn't right for that role and both the character and film as a whole are poorer for it.

Han knows exactly who she is, you could see it in his face when he asks her what her name is. That being said....

I waited 30 years for THIS? Seriously? What the flying fuck.

Finn had a ton of potential as a character, and they turned him into a cowardly, lying dummy who was just chasing a piece of tail and was willing to screw everything up and/or get himself killed to get it.

Han Solo, hero of the Rebellion, was a down on his luck freighter captain again, busy staying one step ahead of his debtors while chasing down his ship? One would think that NOBODY would be dumb enough to steal the Falcon from a guy who went to task taking on the Empire, but apparently the galaxy is full of pretty stupid people. And why in gods name wouldn't he just use all his contacts in the Republic to find it, because god knows they owe him a few favors after Yavin, Hoth, and Endor.

Kylo Ren wiped out the Jedi? HOW? The guy went head to head with a failed stormtrooper and struggled! What, was Luke at the bar getting hammered when Kylo went all dark side and screwed up the new order? It's either that, or Luke is a really, really bad Jedi Master.

And good god is the Republic an abysmal failure. What's that, a nifty little offshoot of the Empire is springing up? Eh, just toss some X-wings at it and that should do the trick. No need to throw out full weight into squashing them, it's not like they would try to build another super weapon capable of wiping out entire star systems. Whoops, billions are dead now! Our bad! Vote Republic!

Phasma, ugh. Boba Fett v2.0. Looks cool, you expect badassery, and then PBBBBT! Gone! Better luck next movie!

Rey is pretty much the only character in the entire movie thats worth a damn. Strong willed, experienced, and apparently the only one capable of knowing what they have to do and fucking doing it aside from Poe.

And then there's the shit that doesn't make any fucking sense. Like how the hell did Artoo know when to wake up? Was he on some sort of timer? Waiting for Rey? A random number generator set to wake him up when it hit a certain value? Where the hell did he get that map? And where the hell did the First Order get the resources to build that thing? You don't just find that much scrap metal lying around. You would think some intelligence analyst somewhere would have noticed when enough metal to build a few warfleets was purchased and then vanished. Or somebody would have tipped off someone to there being a planet with a giant fucking hyperspace laser beam build into it.

Just... ugh. All the hype. All the waiting. And then this happens.

Fuck.
Good god, you could poke just as many holes in the OT. You're a victim of your own cynicism here. TFA is pulp adventure fare that perfectly mirrors the OT's pulp adventure fare. It's a pretty stunning return to form for the franchise.

Lucas's infamous line, "It's like poetry, it rhymes" isn't such a hideous joke if you pretend that he was making a prophetic statement about the new trilogy. TFA feels intimately connected with Star Wars in all the ways the prequels don't. You can tell that even John Williams was feeling it, considering how he revived the OT's classic sound in his TFA score. Not just in the themes, but all those whimsical little cues in the background of regular scenes.

Movie was dope.

Calling it now, Rey will be the final villain, the most powerful force user in recent memory, and Kylo will end up good.

You know when they are fighting at the end, I thought she was going dark and was going to try to kill him. I can see that being a possibility.

I'd be upset, also they won't. They want girls to have a role model in this universe to look up to. Kathleen Kennedy said as much already.

In the theater that I went to there were about 4-6 little girls in front of my row that couldn't have been older than 9. They all brought their lightsabers and were playing with them before the movie started.

It must have been such an amazing moment for them when Rey picked up the lightsaber.

The whole theater cheered when that happened, shit was hype.

Why would it match? That's just a coincidence, it's art from Snook, and no he's not Vader. I'm just saying I doubt the burning armor was Anakin's body.

Why would he just burn armor? Burning of the body appears to be a way that the Jedi send off the dead. See Qui-Gonn from Episode 1 when they burned his body.

Yeah, I loved Boyega and Ridley. Both were fantastic, I loved that they felt like grounded characters and weren't mapped entirely to hollywood style acting. So glad they got low profile actors for this.

Also agree on the trailers for this. I loved going in as blind as I did. BvS looks absolutely shit, and I hate all the details that they've left me with. Comics should be just as well established as SW to be able to convey theme without spoiling plot.

I agree that Batman vs. Superman looks like garbage. Warcraft doesn't look that hot either.

Lucas did that retroactively, don't pretend otherwise:p Luke wouldn't know how Jedis get rid of bodies. Everyone is having a party burning Luke's father? Probably just the armor.

He was alright but he kept saying how torn apart and conflicted he was but we were given no idea as to why. And to me it didn't come off as begging an interesting question but rather just shallowly written. If you're not going to tell us at all then have him be evil all out and save his conflict for the next movie where you can give us some insight.

People love to mock that line but I honestly think it makes a lot of sense and is actually a pretty great story telling device.

There is a certain beauty and attraction to symmetry and reptition in storytelling that people just love. It's why we love the theme of history repeating itself, of characters having offspring that go on to tell stories of their own and symbolic references and reoccurences that remind us of the past.

Conceptually, the prequels are actually pretty great. The execution were super disappointing and downright terrible in many ways, but there were many redeeming things about them that I loved.

Also really liked the X-Wing battles in this. Especially when Black Leader goes HAM, and has Finn questioning who the awesome pilot is.

Rey was excellent. I had to wipe tears away with Solo. I could see it coming. When he went back to set those charges I had a flashback of Obi-Wan at the end of IV. I was saying no in my head over and over.

Daisy Ridley is going to be so fucking famous after this. She killed it.

This was her first film right?

what kind of salaries are they getting? I mean obviously the know this will make 40 bajiilion dollars.

Hamil, Ford and Fisher must have got good money, but the new guys? Finn and Rey are going to be megastars right now and Adam Driver was fucking great.

Oh, the idea is sound for sure. The execution was just tragic. I enjoy the PT for its art design and great scores, but compared to TFA it's about as distant from Star Wars as Avatar.

When Kylo stopped that blaster fire mid air though though, where you could hear it's weird worbly bass and crackle gently emanating through the cinema speakers. Man that was awesome.

Well, the fact he is Han and Leia's kid should be telling as to why he was being torn apart. Leia even told Han that there was still good inside of him and Ren privately confessed to feeling the lure of the Light Side, meaning he was, at his core, still conflicted about the path he had chosen.

Personally, I found that great. Especially the scene leading up to Han's death. One could say it was too blatantly composed, but I am in love with that shot of Han meeting Ren on the bridge where he stands in the middle, just short of being steeped in darkness, and before the light cast down from the point where Rey and Finn are watching over Han.

And following that scene, after he is beaten by Rey (which I still think was dumb), Snoke orders Hux to bring Ren to him so he could complete his training, so it would appear you are getting what you want. The next time we see Ren, he will likely be as committed to the Dark Side as Vader was at the beginning of the OT. I wouldn't rule out an redemption arc - I feel that's almost set in stone - but he will at least be committed to the Dark Side for some time.

Great and awesome movie!!

But.... What was the deal with Shiny Metal Stormtrooper Lady?

She was all looking bad ass when she was first introduced then ended up doing nothing but getting caught at the end? WTF!!

The marketed her like she was gonna be a big deal and I was super excited at her introduction scene for nothing! I guess maybe she is alive at the end but what a disappointment.

Also Froggy Leia was so uncomfortable to listen too. Like I swear I could hear her smoker hacks when the camera cut off of her. LOL

So Kylo Ren wiped out the new jedi order. So what. Does it need to be explained? Ben mentions the clone wars in new hope, and Luke goes "You where in the clone wars?" which he replies "yes". There was no long explanation of what the clone wars were. Where did the empire get the resources to build not one, but 2 death stars? So what if R2 woke up conveniently.

Well.. The clone wars are explained! Just not in that particular star wars movie!

Maybe they will do a animated show showing what happened to the new order that Luke built.

Fuck.

Most of your complaints are all nitpicks that could easily be applied to the OT.

Luke is a whinny teenager in A new hope who decides to go on a mission because he sees a hologram of a pretty girl, and over the course of the trilogy grows into a great character. Why are you expecting a full and complete character development for Finn straight from the get go? Fuck, his character progression in here is actually solid, because the relationship he builds with Rey is actually believable.

So what if R2 woke up conveniently? How did Ben Kenobi get to Luke in time to save him from the Tusken Raiders?

The republic thing and phasma is an acceptable criticism

Like what you were expecting with this movie to suffer this much disappointment?

God damn it they remade A New Hope but with a whiny millenial Darth Vader.

God damn it.
Actually Kylo Ren is whiny Anakin done right, a sad and imperfect reflection of Vader who starts out as a menacing presence and then degenerates before our eyes. Almost the opposite of Anakin, in a way, since Anakin was a whiny child before he became the Emperor's fearsome enforcer. Kylo's whole character arc is one of the best things about TFA, and that's saying a lot.

I'm totally on board with the Snoke is Darth Plagueis and Rey is Luke's daughter theories.

I'm on board with all of the old Sith and Jedi rules to be a thing of the past.

Rule of the two and the Jedi can't love should be put in the past. It's 2015, Jedis should be able to get it on.

we got one

Lol if Rey is indeed a Kenobi, I just want Obi-Wan to reappear as a ghost and be like "Did you see me in my prime? I was a good looking guy, no way the ladies didnt jump on this"

I'm totally on board with the Snoke is Darth Plagueis and Rey is Luke's daughter theories.

Isn't Darth Plagueis dead? Palpatine killed him in his sleep.

"Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew. Then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself."

―Palpatine, to Anakin Skywalker

I don't get why some things get hate in films. Like you're not allowed to have a whiny character, even if it makes sense and works for the character and plot? Or that if the fundamental story isn't original then it's trash, because obviously the first time a story is done is always the best and Star Wars (1977) is TOTALLY an original story /s

The former seems unlikely at this point. But I'm confident that Rey is indeed Luke's daughter.

Has to be. I think Luke left Rey in Jakku because once he saw how Ben/Ren turned out, along with the other Knights of the Ren and his failed Jedi academy (and potentially dead child Jedi's), coupled with knowing how powerful his lineage is, and everything that happened with Vader, he just couldn't take the risk with Rey.

I think that's why there was a bitter sweet moment when Rey held the lightsaber up to him at the end. Yes he missed her and wanted to see her, but at the same time dreaded the potential implications.

I mean, she was drawn to his lightsaber after all. That has to be a pretty blatant clue to her being the daughter, as was her speed in force power usage. But you never know.

Anyone else think her staff is of importance? The camera seemed to focus on it one too many times, and she carries it with her everywhere.

I would guess somewhere in the 1m range with a small royalty kicker added on.
