I thought the opposite. The lightsaber duels were clumsy and lacked grace and fluidity that even the OT films had. Like JJ wanted to move away from the prequel style, but he went too far in that direction.
I think that was the point Rey and Finn never used a lightsaber and it showed they looked like newbs and Ren was hurt

I feel like I'm the only one who liked the freighter/monster scene. Felt fresh, and helped bond Rey and Finn.

I liked it too. It was a great way to reintroduce Han and show how close Rey and Finn had gotten in such a short amount of time. Them skulking around underground, Finn's oblivious grin before realising Rey screwed up and them being like

"This was s mistake!"
"Huge!"

was all great and pretty adorable.

Regarding Rey being a Kenobi and the imagery involved this is what I noticed so far on my viewings:

  • Brit accent
  • First words spoken is some alien language that scares away someone and saves a droid
  • Gives Luke his father's lightsaber
  • When climbing down the troopers there are talking about a BT-17, when Obi-Wan goes to pull down the switch on the Death Star the troopers there are takling about a BT-16
  • Mind trick
  • Sir Alec Guinness can clearly be heard saying 'Rey'. Followed by a whispering voice saying 'these are your first steps' closely mirroring Sir Alec's line 'this is your first step into a larger world'
  • Gets BB-8 to 'play' the message. Han says to BB-8 'show me what you have' BB-8 turns to Rey who says 'go ahead' and BB-8 proceeds to play the message. Once again mirroring Obi-Wan who gets the full message played from R2

Alec Guinness has been dead 15 years.
I agree that it sounded like him but where the hell would that line come from?

Why would you want Maz to die?

So that I don't have to see her in the other two movies. It's nice that they tried but they can do better.

It seems kind of weird to think of Rey as New Luke or Poe as New Han. They all felt like new characters to me. There's definitely parallels but I didn't watch the film thinking oh, this character's just a rehash of a previous one. They all their had their own personalities.

Yeah, Yoda's voice was there. So was Obi-Wan's saying "Rey".
Isn't that a good thing most people are bitching because it felt the same

I hope Phasma returns. She didn't really get a lot to do in this one. It'd be cool if she showed up disgraced and dismissed from the First Order and works as a bounty hunter trying to catch Fin so she can return to the Order.

One thing keeps bugging me, what was the resistance resisting? In the OT it was the empire, but that got vanquished and replaced with the republic....

The current working theory is that they lifted RAY out of the line in Star Wars when Ben tells Luke about how Vader betrayed and murdered his father at the end of the Clone Wars.

Obi-Wan saying "he betrayed your father" or "a thousand generations" in a ANH.

The First Order? The Republic didn't want a full scale war with the First Order but were supporting the Resistance in their fight against them.

do we know what yoda said?

also the scenes with Maz just seemed really random. I mean Maz finds her lying on the floor and the first thing she said is "it called to you!!!11"..seemed so rushed ^^"..

Sure, but they make it clear in so many ways that Rey is pretty much Han's replacement. Obviously she will be using the force, why not? Unlikely that she will be the only one with Ren. Plus we don't know what role Luke will have, but until he dies she is likely going to be doing more piloting and shooting with Chewie than laser-sabering.

Finn on the other hand, we have no idea what's coming for him. He's not particularly good ar anything except being a copilot so far.
Yo huh? Rey is the new Han? How? Did these people not see the movie?

Rey
Living on a sandy planet.
Parents: what parents?
Droid magically falls into her lap.
Droid contains secrets which must be uncovered.
Force sensitive.
Watches her new friend she's just met get slain by a Sith.
Travels to a remote planet to find an old Jedi.

Luke
Living on a sandy planet.
Parents: what parents?
Droid magically falls into his lap.
Droid contains secrets which must be uncovered.
Force sensitive.
Watches her new friend he's just met get slain by a Sith.
Travels to a remote planet to find an old Jedi.

Han
Smuggler
Gambler
Trickster
Loves money
Self centered
Etc

There was so much mirroring in this movie it was blatantly obvious who they want her to be.

So she has force powers, big deal.

She has a blaster, she'll keep using it, they didn't set that up for nothing.

She was about to be Han's new rookie.

Her ship is the Millenium falcon. Chewie is her copilot.

Finn is nothing like Han. He shoots like Luke did when in the falcon or tie-fighter, never drives anything.

Deal with it.

The whole crux of her character is those Force powers. The title of the movie is literally about her!

Yeah she can fire a blaster and fly the Falcon, but those are significantly more minor to her wielding a lightsaber, using the Force, and seeking out Luke -- i.e. the whole climax and resolution of the movie.

You're missing the forest for a couple of trees here.

The Resistance, the First Order, and the Republic were all supremely dumb elements of the film imo and didn't make any kind of sense.

I'm not fond of Finn's character. VIII would be fine for me without him..
I'm quite fond of him. He's a better audience stand-in than the droids were. He's capable of action, but he also is there to highlight the general insanity of the premise does so without being an asshole.

My dude. Not the best quality, but

IeVmSJX.gif

is the arm clipping through that cover?

Birch I'll cut you, but then he immediately decides to keep his secret? Nah, it was more like a, cool, I'll keep your secret. It is a kids movie after all.

BB8 doesn't trust Finn at that point and uses his lighter to give him notice of what'll happen if he screws them over. I think it being an implied "fuck you" and a threat is what really makes it funny.

I wish the movie made it clear that Rey's vision was the result of her being in a Jedi Temple.
Some posters even interpreted the scene as the lightsaber have a will of its own or something.

The characters may be different but the movie goes through virtually the same motions.

While this is true, I enjoyed it for the first half or so of the movie. It felt JJish with everything set to hyperdrive and moving at a brisk pace. Also the entire bit with Han's smuggler freighter felt like the freshest thing in the movie. The look, the boarding, the animals, dare I say it? It felt kinda Star Trek-ian.

Up to this point I was ok with the rehashing, but after this point, it got annoying because too little new elements were introduced.

oh what I really did not like was the helicopter shot right in the end.

like she is holding his lightsaber, looking at him..then it should have ended. but that stupid "let's fly around them" was just a little to much.

favourite line was "that one is garbage" >>

wait, when do they say or show that this is an jedi temple?
My understanding was that the lightsaber may not have a will of its own but seems to contain some kind of "force imprint" from the users it had.
I mean Maz even said something along the lines of "the lightsaber called you"

Are we going to get to see Leia use the force?

Especially if they are going the route of randoms being able to use the Force, it seems they need to have a Leia Force scene.

It's definitely Obi-Wan's voice in that vision, and I definitely remember thinking that his line was pulled from the history lesson he gives Luke in IV.

I'm warming up to the idea that Rey is Luke's daughter... Because I think that will be her temptation to the dark side.

Think about it. The implication is that Luke abandoned his daughter to live a miserable existence in a desert. She might be momentarily glad to find her father, but... I can see that quickly turning into anger and hate once she realizes.

I know, but we all should stop thinking like this. Another copy and paste Story in 8 and 9 and those movies will be doomed. Although TFA already presented us the new characters as being different from the old ones.

Does not really sense to say, that Rey has more Han character traits than Luke, so she is the new Han. That is wrong, she is different from both of them.

I hope they don't just copy paste the next two. But based off the feel and setup of this movie. I think disney is going to play it safe and do that. It will be cool to watch the new guys grow but it seems like the main plot line will follow the OT

I'm not sure why anyone would worry about ANH beats showing up in 8 and 9. LFL and Abrams were always pretty up front about what this movie was going to be. (And not to mention that the ANH similarities are getting a little blown out of proportion.)

Were any of the numbers spoken on screen tied to the Lost lottery numbers?

Seen Miles Storm and Greg Grunberg, wonder if JJ threw the numbers in too.

I like Finn more than Rey.

And a big eff off to everyone saying he's incompetent. Dude was a crack shot with a blaster (no wonder he wasn't cut out to be a Stormtrooper).

Because this movie was basically ANH. They just swapped some pieces around

I loved Finn. Desperate to get away from the First Order but ends up having the courage to defend his new friends. He was hilarious as well. The banter between Han and Finn was definitely a highlight.
