Clones were established in the OT, so I don't know if that was supposed to be a direct reference or not.

In the OT only the Clone Wars were mentioned but it was never specified what the clones actually were: homegrown soldiers for the Republic. In TFA Kylo Ren retorts to Hux that instead of using stormtroopers they should have used clones as they were far more reliable. It was a reference to the prequels.

I thought they just sent him away to school. Like how kids in Harry Potter get sent to Hogwarts.

They sent him to Luke.

Some people want a big bad to tie the three trilogies together.

It ties all three trilogies together. And with the route they're going with Snoke (old and powerful darksider), it makes some sense to use Plagueis rather than just create a new redundant character. Why wouldn't Palpatine have kicked this guy's ass if he was around?
I guess I just don't think people would care very much about that. Also would make the OT seem kinda pointless.

Best new character: Maz Kanata. Really wonderful performance by Lupita Wyong'o, and just a well-written, nuanced character, even if she was a bit of a Yoda-lite. Interesting design. Saw the film twice and the "I like that Wookie" line is gold. I hope she survived the castle attack. How has she lived for a thousand years and yet she didn't have any defenses at her base?.

She's also 900 years old.

Folks let's be real about Finn. He was awkward and a lot of humor felt forced. His "Rayyyyyyy" scream was cringe. Of all the new characters he was the least compelling or interesting.
He was easily the most likeable character in the movie and I thought he was great.

Showed up to the theater to watch this for the first time having nothing spoiled.

Taking a piss and a guy walks in with his son and loudly proclaims "Whar a surprise, Solo dead."

Fucking asshole; I said "hey thanks for ruining the movie" and the guy starts arguing with me kinda acting mad and I just said "asshole" and walk into the lobby. Dude comes out of the bathroom and shoves his finger in my face and starts threatening me over saying asshole in front of his son. I just said get out of my face repeatedly and he eventually left. Dude who violently approached me over one mile swear word In front of his son and had the nerve to say "it's only a movie" as he left.
Classic stupid douche. I've dealt with people like that. They can never be wrong, it's always your fault.

I like how he's worried about his son being exposed to the word asshole when he just watched a movie where a kid violently murders his dad.

My biggest problem with the Snoke=Plagueis theory is how did Palpatine not sense that Plagueis faked his death and was still alive at any point?

Wrinkles wasn't dumb and he should have been able to sense such a strong Force user especially one that he was intimately linked with (master-student bonds are super strong)

Looking at it closer, I don't think it's clipping the panel. I think the arm is just skinnier. Wider at one angle than another.

I'm not as well versed with force mumbo jumbo, but I'm sure writers could figure out a way for it to seem fine. Plagueis had his connection severed, and spend the next decades trying to re-establish it. He went into hiding. Palpatine knew but didn't care. Palpatine was in on it and just lying to Anakin. There's lots of shit they could do.

I'm not saying Snoke Is Plagueis, but I think it'd be a cool route to go.

The Legend of Plagueis is pretty clear that he was the most powerful Force user ever. It may have been possible for him to mask his existence or perhaps it took time for him to recover from his death and by the time he was fully back, Palpatine was focused on other things.

It's worth noting that TCW shows many times that even Palpatine doesn't realize the existence of other force users. He's initially unaware of Darth Maul's survival and misses Count Dooku's own apprentice surviving an assassination attempt. Palpatine is fairly strong but not omniscient and the Galaxy is a huge place.

Worst new character: Poe Dameron. Horrible Disney archetype hero character: handsome, affable, unreasonably perfect, relentlessly upbeat. Made out of cardboard. Doesn't fit in with Star Wars.

Nah he's Wedge for a new generation, slightly more fleshed out than Wedge was.
I love him.

Just saw the movie. I love Finn's character and humor. They nailed him and honestly I prefer him to Rey. She wasn't terrible, but I'm a little meh on all her awesome abilities. I do welcome any possible future romantic relationship between her and Finn though.Glad to see the old cast back too. Ren is a pretty interesting character and is obviously not as cool and he thinks he is. Maybe it's the helmet. BB-8 is so cute.

It is skinnier. If you look closely the shape of the torch looks to fit the empty space. So when the Torch is flipped down, it would go right into that negative space that people think is the cover clipping.

I dunno, I'll be honest, the music didn't really strike me in this movie.
I thought the background music was a huge improvement over the prequels, even if the score wasn't the best in terms of strong original themes. It sounded just like the OT, with the quirky little accompaniments to minor events. Very noticeable to me. The score completes the art design's effect of giving TFA a classic Star Wars tone.

Ya.

Also, it doesn't make sense that she's been waiting 20 years for the people that ditched her when she was a babby to come back. You have to be some sort of idiot to cling on to that. Nevermind being desperate to go back to Not Tatooine just to sit there and wait.

Fucking orphans and their parental hang-ups, what morans.

She's also 900 years old.

Yeah...what does that have to do with the castle being defenseless? She's a badass space pirate and that was her base (or one of them). It wasn't quite believable that she was just living in an ancient castle where her enemies could attack at any time.

Kylo Ren's Motivations and Turn:
- Leia says to Han in TFA that they lost Ben when they sent him away. Why would parents send a child away? Because of some kind of traumatic event.

I'm going to stop you there because Kylo was sent away to train with Luke. That's what they did with up-and-coming Jedi.

-more explanation on the "new" Death Planet and it power.
-Ray's force ability and no back story to it. Kind of takes away from the movie

- Does it need more explanation? It gathers the energy of a sun and shoots it as a weapon.
Kinda bland considering like the whole concept felt like a recycled Death Star, but I don't see how wasting several minutes of screen time on some sci fi pseudo science would have made it better.

- Does she need a backstory? Mabye she is just sensitive to the force. I see it just as the real world, there are people with amazing talents and not all of them have a complex family backstory or explanation for them, they were just born with them.
I actually think that giving her a backstory that's tied to the old movies ("she is the grandchild of obi wan" or something like that) would take away from her character

I love all this speculation. We really didn't get it all that much with the prequels because there was little to truly speculate. We knew where it was generally headed. I imagine this is what it would've been like in the 70's/80's for fans if the internet existed as it does today. It's exciting!

she's a badass space pirate? I thought she was a bar owner.

You come off as a clueless and rather insensitive person to put it mildly.

You know, the lack of explanation on stuff like the republic, first order, and snoke may be intentional. The original movie had this 'thrown into the action' quality to it, where you didn't really know what they were talking about and then they filled in the blanks later on. I bet we'll learn more about all the new elements introduced in later movies, especially luke's jedi order and how Maz got that light saber. Only thing is that i wish there was a sense of power in the galaxy, like im not sure if the resistance or the first order is more powerful. It seems like from what i've heard the republic controls most of the galaxy but the first order is just starting to pop up and the resistance was made to keep them from growing.

Also, i really liked the 'show, don't tell' acting that was going on. Especially when rey and leia met after Han died and they didn't have to say anything since they're both force users. Also the end with Rey and Luke was great, Luke didn't even need to speak and you could just feel all the suffering he went through that made him go into hiding.

Luke looked like a total badass.
White'ish robe with that beard and long hair.

I think you're on to something but I read the mushroom hat guy not as attacking but of telling her to run. If you go through the clip with a bootleg slow mo of pause-play-pause-play.. he's holding what looks like a staff in his right hand and he waves his left hand first as he's turning towards her and then the red saber hits him.

It's very quick and hard to read so you could be right that he's about to swing but as far as what we know right now, it would seem more likely that he's waving for her to run and is killed.

Combine that with the snippets of the book that were posted earlier in the thread that quote Kylo as saying "It IS you" or something to that effect and she may have been the daughter of someone at the academy. Maybe Luke, maybe an Obi Wan descendant, maybe just another Jedi trainee.

Possible, very difficult to tell.

Was she really a space pirate? Thought she was one of those 'neutral players' and because of that probably left alone by everyone.

Possible, very difficult to tell.
Gonna be impossible to say for sure what's happening until there's a good souce to frame-by-frame analyze. And even then it'll probably be too vague to say for sure. It's fun to speculate though.

Not sure how much speculation there would have been after the first one though. It was a pretty self contained package because they didn't know if they'd get to make a 2nd or 3rd one for that matter.

I don't know why but I feel that Poe is gonna somehow be the surprise Jedi of the new characters. Abrams likes twists so I wouldn't be shocked if he makes it happen somehow. Rey being Luke's daughter is too obvious.

lol, this thread has people on the defense

I was just chiming in a fun fact because you said she was Yoda-like. Who is also over 900 years old.
