[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I just saw the movie tonight I thought it was good but definitely a little too similar to episode 4, felt kinda safe, but still a good movie.

I didn't think Rey beating Ren was that farfetched, it was made clear early on she was skilled in combat, and Ren just reeks of dipshit kid who sucks shit anyway. Snoke was like hallelujah, another force user to corrupt that isn't an emotional fruitcake.

The one part of the movie that bothered me, and this is probably silly, is when they captured the chromtrooper and made her take the defenses down. I just didn't buy it that this hardcore soldier trained since birth would do such a thing. I completely expected her to fiddle around on the computer and spring a trap or something, or just tell them to fuck off and go all out on them, but nope she just does what they say. No way in hell, that was dumb.

Oh yeah, not sure if it was mentioned in the last thread, but I'll mention it in this one:

They did call in James Arnold Taylor to do his Ben Kenobi voice, speaking the word "Rey" in that vision. But he didn't make the final cut, because the line was then dubbed again by Ewan McGregor.

So they specifically went out of their way to have Obi-Wan say her name for this movie.

That's it, folks!

Just saw the movie and enjoyed it.

A few things I didnt understand:

1. If there is a New Republic where is its fleet(s)/military?

2. Why is a Resistance needed if there is a New Republic military?

3. Where are the First Order fleets (only saw 1 Star Destroyer)?

4. What part(s) of the galaxy does the First Order control?

I mean there has got to be more to it.

My impressions:
So I watched the new Star Wars, it was both great and extremely disappointing at the same time. It's a rehash more than anything, heck this is the second A New Hope rehash Star Wars has done. I hope the next two movies have the bravery to take risks. Kylo Ren, while I really liked embodiment of rage use of the dark force and the contrast with Darth Vader in that he is unexperienced and out of his depth, overall he was one of the dodgiest part of the movie, and a certain revelation took a page out of one of the worst part of the Expanded Universe. The new cast are great and likeable, but their development and characterization are uneven, with Rey getting the bulk of the focus, and even then her powers developed too fast. The soundtrack itself, while using some of the excellent ones from the older movies, it didn't have any memorable one that it introduces. So the whole movie is like that, with me really liking some things and really disliking some other things about it. At least I can say that throughout the whole thing, Abram's direction was really good.

Can't really place it, but from the sound of her voice and her mannerisms, I got the distinct sense that Phasma was actually a droid.

Having a girl beat a dude in a fight is "bad storytelling"

Jesus

Anyway, can't wait to see this again when I can afford it. Most psyched to watch the lightsaber battles and see if they make me tense again, like they didn't in the prequels
Um... ok.
Guess I should have made it more clear.

Rey had the staff way before that scene where she is pilfering the star destroyer. There is no way Snoke is Plagueis.

There's multiple destroyers on the planet. According to the art book, both star destroyers and one super star destroyer. It's possible she scavenged the staff from the super star destroyer from an earlier scavenge. It'd be fit for a place Palpatine may have stored some stuff.

Also why don't you think Snoke is Plagueis?

What's with you and painting everyone as a sexist?

I get pretty annoyed when people project sexism. But some of the dismissal of Rey's character, even stuff that was explicitly depicted throughout the film, is really irritating. They expect her to be perfect in logic, but also incredibly flawed in ability. But then they expect Ren to not be flawed, and to have reached abilities that other Jedi have set a precedent for. Yet deny him his very character elements, because they hate that Rey could best him.

It's just absurd, and some of the criticism seems to come from a very odd place. I'll defer to Hanlon's razor first. But there is certainly a deficiency in consideration at play.

Dunno if you saw in the old thread, but I finished my last ep. of Full of Sith today and made sure to namecheck you and your observations from the previous thread.

Hope your screenname is pronounced Fed-dot-En-El, because that's how I said it.

4. What part(s) of the galaxy does the First Order control?
1) Blown the fuck up

2) as far as I know the Republic wasn't openly against the First Order to keep the peace, First Order found out Republic was secretly supporting the Resistance -> First Order blows up the Republic planets

someone else more knowledgeable than me can take the other two

I guess out of all the "relations" Rey could have, Obi-Wan is the one I'm most cool with. Would still like it if she was just a rando, though

1) When they first fired the Starkiller, Hux said they were going to strike the Republic for shielding the Resistance. It looked like he blew up an important looking planet. It most likely devastated their resources.

2) No clue, probably to avoid another all out intergalactic war.

3) no clue

4) No clue

1) New Republic doesn't consider the First Order a threat.

2) See #1

3) The First Order is currently small.

4) Outer rim planets at the start. They're trying to re-establish the Empire and finish eliminating all traces of the Jedi.

2. New Republic was apparently as effective at getting shit done as the Old Republic

3. Somewhere else

4. Unknown Region

That's interesting, because apparently it's Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice that calls out to her in one of her visions. Either Kenobi is guiding her, or she's somehow from Kenobi's lineage instead of Luke's.

Force ghost Obi knew of her through Luke, bam!

Umm, ignore how it seemed no one else but Luke could see them at the end of ROTJ, maybe the others just didn't look. >_>

Saw it yesterday, 5/5 fantastic movie. Everything I hoped for and more.

Minor annoyance: the name 'Snoke' is not menacing at all. That's a name you give a cute puppy, not an evil overlord.

Um... ok.
Guess I should have made it more clear.

Gotcha. Gotcha gotcha. Yeah, from that angle, I could see the questions being raised.

Sorry I'm on the #ReyDefenseForce so completely :P

But there is certainly a deficiency in consideration at play.

Or perhaps it's a deficiency in storytelling that you're not considering when so many people notice the same thing. It's fine if you disagree, but it's intellectually lazy to write the entire argument off as some gamer-gate like mentality.

There have been plenty of complaints about the other, non-women, characters too. But I don't think it's surprising that the main protagonist would also be the one who draws the most attention. Hell, young Anakin Skywalker got so much from the prequels shit that Jake Lloyd quit acting.

She's not untrained lol. She was a bad ass throughout the film. Fending off multiple enemies at one point earlier, with just a staff and some martial arts. Even Finn is also a stormtrooper who according to the art book, was top of his class in nearly everything.

Add to that Kylo was badly injured and emotionally completely unbalanced. It's clear through several scenes he's most powerful when he's fully in control. In that fight it was the complete opposite, and he was an angry emotional mess.

I don't think people complaining about the fight or outcome as an example of poor writing have really thought things through.

While the movie was fun, It felt more like a set up for the next two than a stand alone classic

There were far to many old characters returning for me to get super excited

Also they made Reys force ability way too strong for a noob kid who was basically a junk collector her whole life. The whole thing with her controlling the trooper and her using force pull to get the lightsaber away from Ren was pretty garbage imo. It took Luke a year of training with Yoda to be any good.

Thats the only issue I have

Wow, really? I never got that impression but I guess it's possible. I don't know if a droid having such a high position makes sense, though.

There is still hope!

It seems highly plausible to me that Snoke is reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz for a reason.

I bet Kylo chumps him in the next film. Or at least I hope he does. I don't know anyone personally who thinks he's worth a shit right now.

To be fair he didn't really look that menacing in the film.

I mean Snoke looked like a large projection of the bad guy from Skylanders.

Kylo is clearly not fully trained; he's young and the big bad at the end calls him back to be fully trained. He's also quite wounded, having been shot in the side by Chewie (a point reiterated several times during the fight) and cut badly in the shoulder by Finn. He'd also just killed his father and was an emotional wreak, and was facing someone who knew how to melee fight for a very long time; I wouldn't be surprised if Rey was actually more experienced that Kylo was as a melee fighter. And Kylo still had her on the run until the very end.

Haven't you heard? Monosyllabic "S" words are the most evil thing you can name someone. Just ask Sheev.

The Republic had its entire military at those planets?

You'd think they would be a tad worried about the ominous looking weapony planet First Order was building. But yeah that does make sense that the Resistance is basically the Republics "if you die we will disavow you" force assuming there is a fragile peace between republic and first order forces. Although I guess that fragile peace is down the drain now.

The entire series is full of people with superior power losing to those weaker than them due to being reckless, emotional and hasty. The entire Skywalker line of Jedi had the same issue. It's consistent for the series and based on what had just happened to Kylo Ren.
And, he barely lost after receiving several injuries throughout and before the fight.

One was training, the other was surviving.

One was trying to live up to the family legacy and the pressure that comes with it, while the other one was trying to survive on nothing but their wits.

One is mentally unstable, the other is a strong independent woman :p

Which one do you think will draw more power out of the force?
Mentally broken or someone with a strong will?

And in the end it wasn't the force that helped her win. It was conquering her own fear and fighting the way she always does.
Not to win, but to survive.

I forgot to put force user after untrained.

That'd be dope. We don't need the Emperor again.

From what I remember in the other thread, the Resistance is aimed at solely preventing Luke's whereabouts from being discovered by the First Order, not as the sole military of the Republic

Might be wrong though

As an aside, fuck Snoke. Worst name ever and every time I saw him I thought he'd look more at home in a Marvel movie than SW. That name...MORE SYLLABLES PLEASE
