Best case scenario, it's middling. I've seen too many other 3D movies to really give it any credit. It doesn't ruin the whole thing, but it doesn't make the movie much better.

Edit: For those disagreeing, what are your best in class 3D movies?
 
You know, about Maz, I feel like there's more to her. I remember the old thread hating her because she's just exposition spouting, but they made a point that she's going to be relevant later on.

I'd argue the opposite, there's no way she's a Skywalker

I think the traits she shares with Luke and Anakin are less about a family link and more about a young person coming to grips with the power of the force

I think that she is from Kenobi's bloodline and somehow the others all know who she is. I think she was put in hiding from a young age or something like that to stay off the map until she was ready. everyone else (like Han, Leia, and Ren) seem to know who she is already.
 
The reason Artoo woke up when he did was as explained by the Lucasfilm story groups Pablo Hidalgo. He wasn't ever off. Just in low power mode for the last decade or so since Luke disappeared. When he heard BB-8 had the missing map piece when they initially arrived he began his boot up sequence. Which due to fact he has been in low power mode for so many years and is a very old outdated model took hours to fully power on.

He didn't wake up suddenly in the final scene. He began powering back on soon as he hears the missing map piece had been recovered.

Either way, it's in one of the early trailers and seemed to suggest a connection to Rey.

Eh...when did Obi Wan ever have coitus? We saw his life from the early years up until he's defeated by Vader. I would love for that to be true, but I don't see it. Beside, there's an obvious connection to Anakin's/Luke's lightsaber the movie makes. That would seem to have nothing to do with Obi Wan.

Seeing as he's painted as a rather "immature" crybaby kind of character - someone who emotionally overreacts, Leia might know that she'd need to just stay out of his way for a few hours / days and let him cope by himself.

We do get a shot of him alone n depressed. We also get a shot of Leia grieving alone near that UI display and then we get an extended hug between her and Rey as the Resistsnce celebrates in the background. I didn't pick up on this the first time but the film does at least show her "mourning" Han's death. I actually thought Carrie Fisher's performance was better the second time as well. Biggest issue I had with the final act is how blasé everyone is about attacking the biggest weapon the world has ever seen. Han is cracking jokes during the mission briefing. The threat is never felt like it is in ANH nor is there the same kind of dramatic tension. The end of ANH is an absolute master class in dramatic tension, pacing, editing and payoff. It's one of the best endings in the movies.

yeah, what'd be the point then? Remember, in universe, there's no audience. So what would he be saying to Rey by just snatching that saber? He's no show-off.

Really? Cops have guns and tazers but they still practice hand-to-hand combat and carry batons. And in the movie we see a Stormtrooper using a baton/melee weapon. Swords might be a stretch, but not out of the realm of possibilities.
 
Saw the movie last night, found it pretty enjoyable. Loved that there was no music theme during the saber fights, it gave it tension to me. Loved the saber fights, they seemed believable, minus Rey out dueling Ren, but whatever.

BTW, throughout all the OT and PT films, are lightsabers always activated by buttons? I had the impression they were triggered by the force.

Edit: Nvm just was reminded of Grievous.
 
I love how everyone is now an expert on Mary Sues.

After seeing it a second time, I noticed Rey figured out the mind trick after she turned Kylos mind read back on him - I imagine she saw some things in his mind that gave her inspiration on what she could try.

The movie also establishes she's a great fighter early on, where presumably Luke wasn't. Considering the previous two trilogies involved prodigiously gifted young Jedi, I don't really see a difference here. She still reads like an amateur.

Do they? The last time we see her she's giving finn the lightsaber and that's it.
I mean she's still on that planet for all we know.

It would also be another interesting way for the new trilogy to twist something that was in the older movies, which was Obi Wan sending Luke to Tatooine at birth. Instead this time, a Skywalker sends a Kenobi to an obscure, therefore safe place at birth.

Is there a mysterious part of the Kenobi family that was just never mentioned in the films before? I don't think it was ever implied that he had siblings or even kids of his own (and if he did, Rey would be in her late 30s by the time Force Awakens takes place)

Kathleen Kennedy said the Star Wars saga films are the Skywalker family drama. And that they will ALWAYS be about the Skywalker family.

It wouldn't be the Star Wars saga if it wasn't about this family. That is the entire point of the saga. Non-Skywalker stories is what spin-offs are for.

It's like going to see a Batman film without anyone taking on the mantle of Batman. That is how this is treated. And has always been treated.

not sure they'd be building up to a reveal that is only meaningful to watchers of a cartoon series.

They did that with Grievous in the prequel trilogy and people were like "who the FUCK is that dude and why does he cough so much?"
I think for essential plot points, they're not going to be using (new)EU stuff.

I feel like R2 powered up because Luke somehow communicated with him to. Luke probably felt the awakening of the force within Rey and instructed R2 to power on to lead her to him. I'm not sure if that's possible though but that's how I figured it. would explain why Luke seemed to be anticipating her arrival.

The midsection of this movie is the low point really. The scene with the smugglers, the pit stop with Maz. Good thing the quick pace picks up and doesn't linger on these missteps but even after a second viewing this section of the script def needed more work.

Nah, he shot down that theory pretty quickly. Pablo was asked that and said the reason is he turned on due to BB-8 arriving with the missing map piece before the final act and it just took him a while to fully power up.

That sword thingy the stormtrooper used to fight Finn seems to have been invented solely for that scene. When else would it have been useful? If the world was populated with jedis and other lightsaber weilding people, then I could understand.

I'd have been okay with Finn's fight if they had either (i) shown him training/sword fighting before, maybe as a hobby or something or (ii) Kylo just beats the shit out of him. To me it just kinda cheapened the whole idea of lightsaber combat.
 
What is going to be the dynamic between the 3 main characters going forward? Rey as the Jedi is pretty easy, and we have Poe as the super skilled pilot. So what is Finn's role? Is he the weapons expert? Comedy relief?

The weapon the stormtrooper wields is a baton. It's usually used for riot control. It also blocks lightsabers. Seeing they're led by a guy using a lightsaber (and maybe Snoke?) it doesn't seem that strange to me.

The First Order want to kill the last of the Jedi.

The funny part is that the Skywalkers so far haven't amounted to shit (in current canon) aside from Anakin. Luke was alright, Leia not much, Ben a whiny try-hard. Every one believing Skywalkers to be the center of everything and the most powerful Force wielders simply haven't let go of the wiped EU.

I would wish they take out romances on this, had enough of that with the prequels. But because I know it's gonna happen I hope they leave it to the very end of the trilogy atleast.

Because Kylo was shot in the stomach with a weapon that blows people across rooms. Kylo was losing blood and mortally wounded. Surprised so many people seem to dismiss this.

Without the blow from Chewie he would have killed Finn and Rey.

It's a bit hard to have a sword fight after what is essentially a shot gun to the stomach.

This makes me very sad. And yes barring a shocking turn of events I stand by this being creatively bankrupt.

We'll see. And I still hold out hope that Rey isn't related to anyone.

Edit - though as others are pointing out, Kylo is a Skywalker. So it could still be about "them" without having to pander and make Rey Luke or Obi-Wan's shuttled off offspring.

Luke tried to raise the next generation of Jedi and failed.

Pretty sure some Skywalker blood is going to continue that role and get force-sensitive peeps to go get trained in the Force.
