I think Luke effortlessly force pulling the saber into his hands would've been a good ending. Instead they did some weird helicopter pan which I hated.
Why would he do that?
The pan was pretty weak though. Should have cut to black on the close ups.

Kathleen Kennedy said the Star Wars saga films are the Skywalker family drama. And that they will ALWAYS be about the Skywalker family.
It wouldn't be the Star Wars saga if it wasn't about this family. That is the entire point of the saga. Non-Skywalker stories is what spin-offs are for.
It's like going to see a Batman film without anyone taking on the mantle of Batman. That is how this is treated. And has always been treated.
The reason Artoo woke up when he did was as explained by the Lucasfilm story groups Pablo Hidalgo. He wasn't ever off. Just in low power mode for the last decade or so since Luke disappeared. When he heard BB-8 had the missing map piece when they initially arrived he began his boot up sequence. Which due to fact he has been in low power mode for so many years and is a very old outdated model took hours to fully power on.
He didn't wake up suddenly in the final scene. He began powering back on soon as he hears the missing map piece had been recovered.
Is Star Wars Rebels Canon now? IF so then either Ezra or Kanan could be her father or somebody from that thread.
Yes they are canon. Always have been.
What is going to be the dynamic between the 3 main characters going forward? Rey as the Jedi is pretty easy, and we have Poe as the super skilled pilot. So what is Finn's role? Is he the weapons expert? Comedy relief?
Would've been nice if C-3PO explained this.
Yeah, but that stormtrooper hadn't been shot by a crossbow beforehand.
The weapon the stormtrooper wields is a baton. It's usually used for riot control. It also blocks lightsabers. Seeing they're led by a guy using a lightsaber (and maybe Snoke?) it doesn't seem that strange to me.
The First Order want to kill the last of the Jedi.
Ultimately this comes down to whether one thinks that Star Wars should be more complex or more simple, and I fall in the former camp. I don't really subscribe to the view that everything needs to be as clean cut as possible and that SW cannot or ought not grow beyond its roots. Just because the final film shows us the most basic version of events doesn't mean that it's satisfying. And I've always felt this way since the PT came out. I'm glad the new canon is still continuing to explore the Galactic Civil War outside the simple presentation of the original movies.
It's ridiculous that the destruction of the capital of the galaxy is treated as a one off thing rather than the most important event in the film. There's no point in really talking further about it if we disagree about that, because it's a disagreement that's unresolvable.
Yeah for sure, and I think that's kinda lame lol
Granted they obviously wanted something that mirrors the destruction of alderaan but on a massive scale, and that worked, but I just feel like the republic is kind of important to just do away with in a simple show of force scene. We can infer how high the stakes are just from them comparing the damn size of the thing to the death Star and Finn should know it's capabilities.
Just a nitpick really, I wanted the republic out of the way so the next film can chart completely new territory, but I feel like it would have had more impact at the end of the movie, instead of happening when it did and not even getting a mention at the end.
I love how everyone is now an expert on Mary Sues.
Not anyone they've introduced so far that I can think of. I believe Rebels is about 10 years before ANH. So he'd have to be like 30-50 in there already.Anyway, my point being if he was anyone, could he be an aged SW Rebels character? I havent seen the series yet.
Even cooler was they originally had Obi-Wan's voice actor from Clone Wars do it before replacing him with Ewan.Audio recoding of JJ talking at a WGA screening about the Obi-Wan lines.
The 'Rey' part is indeed Sir Alec Guinness (comes from the line: He betrayed and murdered your father.) 'These are your first steps' is said by Ewan Mcgregor.
Skip to around 27m for JJ to start talking about the Obi-Wan lines.
edit:
Jett pointed out it's not from Betrayed but from Afraid.
Did Poe Dameron even meet Rey in this film?

No point in discussion if we disagree? Then why the hell are we on a discussion board?
Star Wars can be complex. It's a big universe with a lot of stuff in it. But that's not the debate - the debate is whether politics needed to be in this film.
What the fuck is a Mary Sue
That sounds like a brand of maple syrup

He's both. His mother is a Skywalker and his father a Solo.So Kylo is a Skywalker and not a Solo?

I would lose this look. It's not a good one.A way for men to complain.
So Kylo is a Skywalker and not a Solo?
Not to mention the movie bashes it over your head how powerful Chewie's blaster is. Kylo took that shit full on and was powering through it.

Apparently this is what some people have turn it into. A shame really.A way for men to complain.
That's why I said there's really no point in going further with it. I think that this film did need these things, and I laid out why, and you think this film didn't need these things and you laid out why. And if we keep talking about it we'll just keep going around in circles about it.
So Kylo is a Skywalker and not a Solo?
Huh?
No he is a Solo. Why would you think he is a skywalker?
I like that the name kylo references both solo and skywalker.
The attacks on her character online mostly reek of sexism let's be honest. No one says this shit about perfect male lead characters that we get in blockbusters constantly. Even Lucasfilms story group lead called this out on Twitter yesterday. She is a fantastic character.Apparently this is what some people have turn it into. A shame really.
No criticizing a bad character, I guess.
That was some badass mook, i have a theory he was Finns best friend on the First Order and was very angered by his betrayal, thats why he decided to forge a new weapon for the fated day he would be able to kill his former comrade. And get himself a new pretty suit like Phasma.Finn's battle with the trooper who was wielding an anti-lightsaber club thing was pretty boss.
I like that the name kylo references both solo and skywalker.

I... never actually realised that.I like that the name kylo references both solo and skywalker.
Seems he's more the charming regular no power sidekick.Stewing on the movie more (still going to see it again next week), Finn feels closer to Jar-Jar in terms of role. Even with conveniently tucking him away so the hero can go meet Luke. I'm still hoping he has the force in him (there are good hints that he does have it). Otherwise it feels sadly like token black comedy slapstick.

Well Leia is Anakin's daughter.
I didn't even notice this. Ha.
He's not a Skywalker by name, but Vader is his grandfather and Luke is his uncle. He's of the same bloodline as someone who was immaculately conceived via the Force. He's a Skywalker.
Apparently this is what some people have turn it into. A shame really.
