[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

He does one time in ROTJ. I had forgotten until I did my OT rewatch last week.

Thanks for the tip. I could never remember him.using it so presumed it was a joke about Chewie having this massively powerful blaster with him all the time, but never using it so Han never realised.

Even if you do think Rey is too perfect, she's fucking fun. Most characters that are (god, I'm so sick of this term) Mary Sues have boring personalities. Most true Mary Sues suck because you're told everyone likes them, but they come off as flat. Rey has a personality and is genuinely fun to watch.

That dorky smile she gives after Han tells her Chewie likes her is delightful.

Oh awesome. Definitely going to check this out.

I dunno, I found her kind of annoying. But that's by and large personal taste, not attributable to writing.

She has potential for the other films.

okay, i started asking this question to friends after watching the force awakens.

what are the quotable lines from each movie that made it into the public consciousness (some more than others)? each film of the original trilogy has at least one:

a new hope:
1. may the force be with you
2. help me obi-wan kenobi, you're my only hope
3. these aren't the droids you're looking for

empire strikes back:
1. i am your father
2. this deal is getting worse all the time
3. 'i love you' - 'i know'

return of the jedi:
1. you will pay the price for your lack of vision.

when you get to the prequels, people seem to remember them for being mostly corny or bad, like everything anakin or jar jar binks says in the phantom menace. ignoring those characters:

the phantom menace:
1. fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering

attack of the clones:
1. i don't like sand. it's rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere

revenge of the sith:
1. only sith deal in absolutes
2. you were the chosen one

i think the prequels and maybe everything outside of new hope and jedi might be stretching it though. so with that in mind, what do you think is the line, if there is any, that will be remembered from the force awakens, positively or negatively?

So many folks both here, my FB and in RLM were so focused with Rey and Kylo and I just feel nobody is really talking about Finn. I don't know if it's just because people didn't care about him or that he was enjoyable as comic relief and they didn't see him as more.

I think it's just that Rey presents a lot more mystery to be unraveled right now. Finn's a hit, and so is Poe.

All three newcomers are great.

I really like Finn and I can't wait to see what they do with his character going forward. I have to say Boyega is fantastic in the role.

No complaints probably meant the character worked out pretty good.

Him not having force powers also quietened the racists <_<

Totally fair. I've just found it odd that a few people have suggested she doesn't have a personality.

He was my favorite character in the whole movie. I love the underdog vibe he has going on and I think the best action in the movie was him vs. the storm trooper. I want to see more stuff like that, because I thought that weapon was pretty slick, since it rotates and seems to have a lot of weight behind it.
That'd be pretty cool if Finn adopted some variation of that.

I loved Finn. His character development about overcoming his fear and finding someone to care about was probably the best character arc in the movie.

Kylo Ren could have also been REALLY conflicted during that fight. It was obvious he was toying with Finn, and as soon as Finn got a hit in, Ren immediately disarmed him and finished the fight. However, I think Ren feared Rey. Here was another force user that was strong in the Force (though untrained), and she was strong in the Lightside. We can see this from the very beginning when she refuses to sell BB-8 for those 64 portions. Ren was fearful of the temptation of the Lightside because he wants power but he also has presumably been taught the merits of the Lightside through Luke and his parents. In Ren's mind, killing his father would eliminate that Lightside temptation and conflict within but instead I think he felt crushed by that decision. He looked pretty drained when he encountered Finn and Rey in the forest for the final encounter. This isn't even mentioning the fact that he was weakened by Chewie's attack.

I don't think we'll see redemption of Ren either. I think that'll be the tragedy. Now that Snoke is going to "complete Ren's training" I think Ren will fully succumb to the darkside. It's a mirror of Vader's ultimate redemption -- Vader refused to kill Luke, his son. Meanwhile, Ren did kill his father, Han Solo. We very well may see Snoke using Ren's power, and the effect of Ren succumbing to the darkside will likely fulfill what Han feared: Snoke will use his power and then throw him away once Ren's purpose is complete.

She's still fun but as I said in the the previous thread (i think) she is the chosen one-iest chosen one I've seen in a while.

american directors and americans in general can have a pretty bad blindspot with english girls and will often go for prissy middle class luvvies who have all the bite of a basking shark. the sort of person you meet in student halls who has to read the instructions before boiling a kettle.

rey isn't the worst offender, but still in that category.

Right now Rey is a Mary sue and that's okay. She's a great kickass role model for girls in the realm of sci-fi. Plus she's probably going to turn out to be Luke's daughter and a Force prodigy like Anikan.

I do find it funny how quickly she picked it up, when according to current canon after the death star going boom luke had trouble levitating a limp noodle of all thimgs.

THAT'S NOT HOW THE FORCE WORKS

*BB-8 thumbs up*

She doesn't look very skilled with the saber.

You might want to watch the film again then; after her meditation she's on another level to her wild swinging prior to that. Her swings become very controlled, fluid, and precise. Certainly her prior fighting experience helped her even hold her own with a weapon she's never used before, but it doesn't really explain suddenly becoming on Luke Jedi Master levels with her saber. But whatever...Star Wars!

You know Rey, you really are The Force Awakened.

Totally fair. I've just found it odd that a few people have suggested she doesn't have a personality.

She has a personality, but no real vulnerabilities. This isn't a problem unless they also make you a whiz kid behind the wheel, fixing the falcon, fighting everyone, and defeating the bad guy. When the movie's said and done, she has The Lightsaber, The Falcon, and she gets to go meet Luke.

It's Anakin and Luke all over again, though, so yeah: Par for the course.

Man, I love some of the designs in the art book, particularly early Kylo ones and the first and second Stormtroopers on bottom of page 43 -- should have gone with that!

"So who talks first?"
"That's not how The Force works!"
"That one's garbage!"

Probably all remembered because they're funny.

A lot of people may remember "Luke's a Jedi, but you're his father" and "I'm being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain." too. I thought those we pretty memorable ones, but that may just be me. They won't be iconic, but they're memorable enough.

The most uplifting line in the movie for me was when they're in the Starkiller running into Rey and she translates Chewie's "It was his idea" for Finn. Combined with the hug, I was permanently convinced I want to follow these two for a trilogy.

Haha, she really does get everything cool from the previous trilogy. Makes me even more excited for Finn, as he and Poe are lined up to collect their own original toolkits.

ESB
"Impressive. Most impressive."

RotJ
"Good... Gooooood."
"I am a Jedi, like my father before me." "So be it... Jedi." (replace Jedi with something for amusement)

One of my favorite scenes in the movie was when Ren lost his shit because of Rey escaping and the two Stormtroopers backing away in the hallway hahaha

People acting like Rey flat out whooped Kylo's ass when 90% of the "fight" she was on the defensive trying to run away. Look at it less her taking a injured, bleeding out Ren and more her letting the force come on and take over.

By far the standout portion of the movie. It's also the only thing in the movie that doesn't really have something analogous from the first trilogy. His character is fresh and well written.

Also, none of this is to say that Rey is a bad character. It's just that she's purely in setup mode at this point and it's to this individual movie's detriment.

Yeah, I found this odd. I came out of the movie so jazzed about Finn, but I haven't met anyone else that liked him as much as me. I mean, everyone likes him, but I don't know many people that loved him.
Too be honest it's because most people can relate to Rey (skin color, srry but kinda true) but yes like I said before Finns arc is unpredictable now and I can't wait where he goes next. Of course if he ain't just sleeping through out ep 8

Luke wasn't nearly as amazing as her, so not par for course.

But Finn is the audience surrogate now so that is okay.

Apparently we're not supposed to believe her until she shows us her logged hours. Go figure.

She says she is a pilot plus her introduction basically shows she is obsessed with the concept with the helmet and the x-wing pilot doll.

Like what more do people want?

Taking it in at face value; simply showing that she owns a Rebel helmet and an X-Wing pilot doll, infers to the audience that she is merely a FAN of pilot and flying tech., because that shit is MERCHANDISE, NOT ITEMS THAT TEACH SOMEONE HOW TO FLY

Just because someone's a fan of something, doesn't mean that they're capable of doing it >_>

I'm not fighting the fact that Rey is a well competent protagonist, I'm just saying that the whole introduction of "Rey is a badass pilot" could have been executed in a less janky and vague manner

Like, actually show the audience the EXPANDED LORE-CONFIRMED flight-sim she's apparently logged hundreds of hours in, because that DIRECTLY and INTELLIGENTLY infers that that's how she became a badass self-taught pilot

Hell, have the X-Wing pilot doll sitting beside said flight-sim console, to really hammer in her enthusiasm of the subject for the audience in a cute and empathy-inspiring manner

But just having the doll and helmet alone tells us nothing in relevance to where her sick skills came from

Can we ban the term "Mary Sue?" I'm all for continuing the argument, but I'm about to blow my brains out if I read that again.

As a white man in America, it's hard for me to comment on that. I'd like to think it isn't a huge factor for the average Star Wars fan, but it very well may be.

She knows how to fight.
The problem was she was afraid. She had a vision of this guy and his knights.
Overtime she saw him after that vision you could see the fear on her face.
Especially when she woke up in the interrogation room.

Having the lightsaber she rejected in her hands, she tried to fight him out of fear, but once she was reminded of the force, she used it to calm herself and to fight without fear.

Since she was no longer afraid, she could fight like her normal self. And with the force on her side against an injured Kylo, she was able to win.

How did Luke become a good pilot? People just mention it, you never see him in anything other than a speeder.

Yar, people have different limits on how much assumption they should make to make sense of a narrative. If Luke only said that he's a good pilot, then I'd wonder how the heck could a farmboy be an experienced pilot. But what he said was "I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home." The assumptions I could make from that is narrow enough for my comfort.

i think the prequels and maybe everything outside of new hope and jedi might be stretching it though. so with that in mind, what do you think is the line, if there is any, that will be remembered from the force awakens, positively or negatively?
Does BB-8 giving the thumbs up count? I know it's not dialogue, but that got a pop from my audience that was as big as the opening crawl got.

But in the movie, how?

I really wish I didn't have to go into Expanded Universe stuff to figure out that she became a competent pilot from flight-sims. I know that this is ultimately a super minor thing to be antsy about, but is it too much to ask for this multi-million-currencies narrative to run smoothly once without the need for me to think and make stuff up as I go?

Because I care so much, must I really have to correct myself later through some time-wasting independent research, or else be corrected by friends, internet people, etc. who know the lore better than me? I want better-executed lore.

I just want to be spoonfed once and that's it

I don't want this career in fictional dot-connecting

I saw on the news that Harrison Ford recently had to crash land a plane he was flying. But he's an actor! Therefore he clearly can't be a pilot! Impossible! People can only be good at one thing!

Rey is well-acted and has some funny dialogue and I actually cared about her achieving things, which is more than I can say for other super special heroes like Neo from the Matrix.

There's nothing about her to assume she'd lie. She says she's a pilot and than proceeds to be one. Good enough for me.

But this is all redundant because I might've/probably forgotten if she actually mentioned the sim in a conversation with Finn

But still, show don't tell

She's not a Mary Sue though.

I think the issue most people have with it is that's it's like a DBZ power-up. Getting her ass kicked then "Oh yeah! He said the Force, I can use that!" then the fight turns completely 1-sided the other way.

The set up for Rey being a pilot is identical to that of Luke Skywalker being a pilot: a single throwaway line.

Isn't it curious that we take Luke's ability at face value but are so skeptical with Rey's?

That reminds me. I was absolutely stunned when I went and saw the movie (I'm in Canada fwiw).
From the moment Lucasfilms Ltd. appeared on screen there was silence. People just watched the movie and didn't have any reactions during it. Once the credits began people clapped, but it really surprised me. I remember the reactions when I saw Eps 2 & 3, so this was a pleasant change that it was simply people paying attention and enjoying the movie.

I just got back from my second viewing. One of a few things that stood out to me:

There was a scene near the end, after Han and them get the shield down. It flashes to the Resistance base and they tell Leia the shield is down. Leia orders the attack, and the guy relays it to the communications officer.

I swear that comm officer is Temeura Morrison, meaning the dude is a clone. Sounded like him. Looked like him. Can anybody who is seeing this movie again soon look at it?
