[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Anyone feel the helicopter shot was a bit random? I mean the rest of the film is shot beautiful.

Yeah it really jumped out at me upon a second viewing. The visual lexicon the series has used up until that moment has never included such a shot. A wide profile shot of the two would have worked in the tradition of final shots in Star Wars films.

Man the thirst for Rey to be Luke's kid is real.... but I'm not buying it.

Luke was ready to sacrifice his life for Vader, him abandoning his daughter wouldn't fit his character imo. I would think Luke would've placed a little more emphasis on family considering his own family history

Well, her journey from a talented pilot on a desert planet to becoming a Jedi is same path previous Skywalkers took. And the part where Maz says the lightsaber called to Anakin, then Luke, and now Rey seemed like the smoking gun to me.

If the Knights of Ren were trying to hunt down Luke, it would make sense that he would distance himself from her.

Joke post? Huh? Ford probably has the second most dialog in the movie after Rey... And maybe Finn. His performance was easily on par with the OT.
I hope you're joke posting. Ford hasn't given a shit in years. Hammil deserved to have the spotlight back on him after 30+ years.

Fuck Ford, and fuck Fisher too! They should have killed their characters offscreen, from two broken hearts.

I'm assuming he's talking about Mark Hamill.

Also question before I start reading through this entire thread - is this for spoilers only for The Force Awakens or is this thread also talking about potential spoilers/leaks for Episode VIII and IX?

There aren't any yet. Just a bit of casting news and that Hamill returned to Skellig Michael a few months ago. Filming starts in January.

gotta say that the scene where poe and co are planning the attack on starkiller base had unusually shitty acting. maybe it's just how memefied ackbar's voice has become but i had to fight giggles when he opened his mouth.

I don't get the "Ford was bad" responses. How was he bad?
To me it looked like he was really enjoying the role, a great return to the old Han Solo. The only time it felt off was his expression after getting stabbed by Kylo. Really the only cringeworthy acting in the movie was Carrie Fisher.

He wasn't bad at all. He seemed to be enjoying himself and I don't think he could have done any better in the bridge scene. The banter with Finn and Chewie was great.

The little creepy kid in Looper was basically a force user. Hope we get a creepy flashback showing Rey doing some crazy ass force shit as a small child

Yeah

Ford sold me. Fisher didnt

DUDE. What if REY is actually the Villain and Kylo is racing to aquire enough power to stop her and Luke is too scared to kill his own daughter

Ackbar's voice was terrible in this movie. I get it, it's cool to use the same voice actor as from Jedi, but... he's clearly too old to do that same voice now lol.

Its just odd

Vader was pretty much the Emperors muscle until he found out he had family. It was then he had aspirations to reunite his family to rule the galaxy

I dont get any of those vibes from Ben. They could have at LEAST given Ben some hint that he has no plans of being a Sith bitch. That would make him more compelling and more of a wild card.

I think they gave him a couple of hints. He straight up says he's still feeling the tug of the light side, plus he seems more focused on surpassing his grandfather more so than being a pawn for someone else. Like, if Snoke would get in the way of Ren's goals I think Ren would turn on him.

Carrie Fisher also can't act worth a damn, showing that Leia was no better than Padme after all.

I think she did great with what they gave her. I don't know why they made all of her dialogue exposition, but I was so happy to see her. She's still got the sass she gave the role way back when. I really loved when she said "may the force be with you" at the end of the film. She looked regal in that dress with the buns like that.

The scenes with him and fisher together just seemed like a soap opera it was AWFUL. But, the bridge scene was great.

That felt like a dead giveaway to me as well. Maybe it's one of those things where the audience is supposed to pick up on it, and you just can't wait for Rey to find out.

The look on Luke's face when he see's her, man.

Mm. Fisher has had a hard 30 years, but she definitely felt like an older, seasoned Leia.

Ackbar maybe should've been CG. Puppets are fun and old-school and CG can be over-used, but there's a reason why Maz wasn't a puppet.

Dude

Im sorry but the Catalyst SHOULD be that Luke and Ben has disagreements about what to do about REY

She went ape shit and killed a bunch of people. Luke wiped her memory and Ben said we should kill her

Maz had a lot more to do on screen than Ackbar. There was no reason for Ackbar to not be a puppet when all he did was stand around a table.

Is it true that toys of Rey are hard to find? Not because they're sold out but because there's barely any toys of her compared to other characters?

Isn't the typical of mostly boy oriented toy lines to short shrift the female action figures?
I know the movie made a noble effort to get females onboard (there is even Star Wars make-up, light side and dark side).

For all that effort the toy manufacture probably still felt Star Wars still is skewed to young boys.

Phasma is a special case, because you can't tell she is a female. In fact there was some controversy because her Halloween costume was actually made for little boys.

And I don't know if they are wrong, but its to soon to tell if Rey or Phasma has won a female audience over yet.

Primarily because of Carrie I think. But I'll agree that the dialogue in those particular scenes wasn't a highlight of the movie :P

Really looking forward to Rey, Ben, Finn and Poe in the next movies.
BTW, is Poe force-sensitive? Shattered Empire combined with his piloting skills in the castle scene are really strong hints that he might be.

Nah man, Ackbar must stay puppetry. I loved the use of puppets in this movie. Bobbajo was in the movie for like 12 seconds, and he was a puppet. Awesome.

I just think the way his mouth flapped looked awkward. A motion capture performance mixed with CG could've been much more expressive.

Yeah puppets work best when they're not the centre of attention and don't have to act and recite dialogue. Bobbajo is awesome. Ackbar could've been a bit better.

Not sure how Phasma can win anyone over, she hardly did anything. At least Boba Fett fired his weapon a few times.

And yet planets are getting destroyed, you know he feels it and yet he just sits idly by on his rock doing nothing cause of the academy? Plus his friend gets killed. Nope, staying on my rock. That rubbed me the wrong way.

1. we know he's emotionally sensitive from Ep 4-6. Prone to being self-pitying and emotional.

2. He's failed in many ways over the years, but the death of every young, new Jedi he was solely responsible for at an academy was probably the straw that broke the camel's back. Not to mention failing his two best friends in the universe - Han and Leia - by failing to salvage their son from the dark side.

Man, he must feel like shit.

3. When you combine the predisposition of #1 with the events of #2... It's little wonder the guy would self-exile and mooch about feeling sorry for himself on an isolated island for years/decades to come.

4. A lot of time has passed between the films, and a lot of events we don't know about. We can't really say whether his actions are justified/in-character or not. We'll probably see a lot more of it in episode 8.

On my second viewing one of the scenes that did not work for me was when Han and Leia talk about their son. The acting from both of them was poor, maybe Fisher brought Ford down a notch, but the dialogue is rough. It's an exposition scene, but it's information both characters already know, and it's not that long of a scene. It's incredibly hard to make that come off as natural.

I heard somewhere that Poe was born near a 'force tree' so its possible.

Seriously, you saw more of him on that panel when they had him walk up and down the stage while Chris Hardwick fanboyed than they had him in the movie

If the Knights of Ren were trying to hunt down Luke, it would make sense that he would distance himself from her.

Kylo also knew he was related to her. When that one guy reported to him that they left with a girl, he force-choked the guy and went "WHAT GIRL". Then in a moment of weakness, since he just killed his father, he tries to replace that void with Rey during their fight by offering her an apprenticeship.

I have a feeling Rey was mind-wiped, and that final scene holding out the lightsaber to Luke and his sad expression was her letting him know she knows.

Luke hid her away the only tried and true way he knew would work, by dumping her off on a desert planet. That's the Skywalker way! Builds character!

It's a script issue. Pretty much every problem with this film is due to a poor script.

Only problem I had with Ford was his death face. I actually laughed when he died bc of the face.

That's from Shattered Empire. He wasn't exactly born near a Force tree but grew up next to one. His mother received one from Luke Skywalker and they planted it at their home on Yavin 4 when Poe was still a toddler.

She sure was hyped in the marketing. One would assume she would have been a big player, I assumed they played on her being a female and really did nothing with her other than hype that fact. They better have a plan for her in the upcoming movies, I liked her character despite her really not being in it.

Worst scene in the movie. Badly edited. Badly written. Badly acted.

However, I get a very specific vibe from the scene. It's super rushed and it doesn't feel like any of the actors were talking to each other - like each take was a unique instance.

Which makes me think - perhaps this was while Ford had been injured and they couldn't have him on-set for any length of time. So all the actors are actually talking to nobody and the cuts are rushed so it's not obvious he's unwell, or he's CG-ed in or something.

It feels wrong, like something went wrong in the production. Will be interesting to hear on-DVD commentary about it. It's a really weird, wrong scene.

force tree

wat

Kylo Ren is the classic build up of a psychopath/serial killer. He should grow tremendously as an evil character in the next episodes.

Everything about her screams that she had some small arc that was inconsequential to the film and was cut.

Wait, The Force grows on trees now? Like Apples?

Are Midi-chlorians Force-seeds?

I am so confused right now.

Yeah, I hope that's where they take it. The Star Wars films haven't really had a straight up batshit crazy villain yet, and that seems to be where they're taking Kylo. I'm into that idea a lot.

Rey was responsible for killing everyone

Ben loses it(cause the other people were his besties), Luke protects her anyways

Oh man... it writes itself

Flashback dashes any hopes of this being the case. Your move JJ. Write a better scenario than me

#teamREYistheVillain

I cant wait for Mark Hammil playing Luke again. Really am not worried he hasnt acted "since ROTJ", he looked terrific in screen. It also parallels Luke being in isolation for some time.
