Anyone feel the helicopter shot was a bit random? I mean the rest of the film is shot beautiful.

Yeah it really jumped out at me upon a second viewing. The visual lexicon the series has used up until that moment has never included such a shot. A wide profile shot of the two would have worked in the tradition of final shots in Star Wars films.

Well, her journey from a talented pilot on a desert planet to becoming a Jedi is same path previous Skywalkers took. And the part where Maz says the lightsaber called to Anakin, then Luke, and now Rey seemed like the smoking gun to me.

If the Knights of Ren were trying to hunt down Luke, it would make sense that he would distance himself from her.

To me it looked like he was really enjoying the role, a great return to the old Han Solo. The only time it felt off was his expression after getting stabbed by Kylo. Really the only cringeworthy acting in the movie was Carrie Fisher.

Vader was pretty much the Emperors muscle until he found out he had family. It was then he had aspirations to reunite his family to rule the galaxy

I dont get any of those vibes from Ben. They could have at LEAST given Ben some hint that he has no plans of being a Sith bitch. That would make him more compelling and more of a wild card.

I think they gave him a couple of hints. He straight up says he's still feeling the tug of the light side, plus he seems more focused on surpassing his grandfather more so than being a pawn for someone else. Like, if Snoke would get in the way of Ren's goals I think Ren would turn on him.

Carrie Fisher also can't act worth a damn, showing that Leia was no better than Padme after all.

I think she did great with what they gave her. I don't know why they made all of her dialogue exposition, but I was so happy to see her. She's still got the sass she gave the role way back when. I really loved when she said "may the force be with you" at the end of the film. She looked regal in that dress with the buns like that.

Isn't the typical of mostly boy oriented toy lines to short shrift the female action figures?
I know the movie made a noble effort to get females onboard (there is even Star Wars make-up, light side and dark side).

For all that effort the toy manufacture probably still felt Star Wars still is skewed to young boys.

Phasma is a special case, because you can't tell she is a female. In fact there was some controversy because her Halloween costume was actually made for little boys.

And I don't know if they are wrong, but its to soon to tell if Rey or Phasma has won a female audience over yet.

And yet planets are getting destroyed, you know he feels it and yet he just sits idly by on his rock doing nothing cause of the academy? Plus his friend gets killed. Nope, staying on my rock. That rubbed me the wrong way.

1. we know he's emotionally sensitive from Ep 4-6. Prone to being self-pitying and emotional.

2. He's failed in many ways over the years, but the death of every young, new Jedi he was solely responsible for at an academy was probably the straw that broke the camel's back. Not to mention failing his two best friends in the universe - Han and Leia - by failing to salvage their son from the dark side.

3. When you combine the predisposition of #1 with the events of #2... It's little wonder the guy would self-exile and mooch about feeling sorry for himself on an isolated island for years/decades to come.

4. A lot of time has passed between the films, and a lot of events we don't know about. We can't really say whether his actions are justified/in-character or not. We'll probably see a lot more of it in episode 8.

On my second viewing one of the scenes that did not work for me was when Han and Leia talk about their son. The acting from both of them was poor, maybe Fisher brought Ford down a notch, but the dialogue is rough. It's an exposition scene, but it's information both characters already know, and it's not that long of a scene. It's incredibly hard to make that come off as natural.

Kylo also knew he was related to her. When that one guy reported to him that they left with a girl, he force-choked the guy and went "WHAT GIRL". Then in a moment of weakness, since he just killed his father, he tries to replace that void with Rey during their fight by offering her an apprenticeship.

I have a feeling Rey was mind-wiped, and that final scene holding out the lightsaber to Luke and his sad expression was her letting him know she knows.

Luke hid her away the only tried and true way he knew would work, by dumping her off on a desert planet. That's the Skywalker way! Builds character!

Worst scene in the movie. Badly edited. Badly written. Badly acted.

However, I get a very specific vibe from the scene. It's super rushed and it doesn't feel like any of the actors were talking to each other - like each take was a unique instance.

Which makes me think - perhaps this was while Ford had been injured and they couldn't have him on-set for any length of time. So all the actors are actually talking to nobody and the cuts are rushed so it's not obvious he's unwell, or he's CG-ed in or something.

It feels wrong, like something went wrong in the production. Will be interesting to hear on-DVD commentary about it. It's a really weird, wrong scene.

I cant wait for Mark Hammil playing Luke again. Really am not worried he hasnt acted "since ROTJ", he looked terrific in screen. It also parallels Luke being in isolation for some time.
