[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I prefer the second one. Even though the first one is the best of the originals have to offer, they look so fucking awkward. Yes, the emotions behind the first are better, I guess.

I'm not that into Star Wars, so I'm just going to see it as an action movie. And if the action isn't good enough, I won't waste my money.

The first one is better 'action' though

Man, to be in a theater in 1980 with audiences experiencing the one-two punch of Luke losing a hand and the "Sup, Son?" reveal. How cool would that be?

I was there. 4 years old but I was there. Saw it on the best screen in Toronto at the time in full 70mm glory.

To this day it remains my favorite movie of all time.

This shit right here.

Versus this:

Ugh, reminding me how bad most of the PT fights were. ESB is so much better than that Yoda fight.

Yea Kylo is shown to be so powerful, grabbing people from across the room, flinging them, detecting and stopping blaster bolts in mid air, yet has a tough fight taking on Finn who got owned by a stormtrooper? I mean yea they kept making a fuss about him being injured but that blaster shot musta really nerfed Kylo hardcore.
I thought it played nicely to his character, the idea being that he's so strong with the Force that he's blinded by his own ego. He thought Rey and Finn would be piss ants, underestimated them, and so he charged at them recklessly.

The thing that I loved about the OT and TFA's lightsaber fights is that you actually feel like the characters are trying to kill eachother and that the lightsaber is actually a dangerous weapon.

That happens in prequels too tho. When Grievous turns into a light saber lawnmower that's a solid "well fuck" moment.

The flippy-fast fights of the prequels make more sense in some ways. You don't need to swing a saber hard all you gotta do is slip past the other guy's guard. Swinging hard is dumb, any time you spend winding up is time you're not guarding.

But yeah. "Heavier" fights sell the emotion better. Rather see people exerting and clashing more because a test of will and determination is more interesting emotionally than a test of dexterity.

John Williams did a great job on the soundtrack, especially with Rey's theme (friends were already humming it yesterday after the movie), the Jedi Steps, Scherzo for X-Wings.

BUT, I do agree that Williams sounded less inspired. Although, honestly, there's only so much new material you can compose for basically the same plot points... I loved the movie, but he was asked to do new music for very similar scenes, for example.

We already have a theme for the Rebels, why do we need a new "March of the Resistance"?

Maybe I need to refresh my memory, but the drama of Luke's struggle with Vader stood out to me more than the actual saber clashing. The overall progression of the final battle and Vader's use of the force to ruin Luke's day with pieces of flying junk is top tier though. Easily one of the highlights of the whole series.

The saber clashing is really good especially at the beginning where you see both of them testing each other. There's also the scene right before the catwalk where Vader surprises Luke and Luke is doing all he can just on defense.

The lightsaber fight is just extremely well done even besides the drama.

Yes. I don't think a lightsaber has ever seemed more dangerous than what we saw in TFA, in part simply because of the physical properties they could give them thanks to the special/visual effects allowed by making the movie in 2015. Them actually lighting up the actors and environment in every shot, the air crackling around Kylo's saber, ALL of that coming together when Finn and Kylo are locked together, the glows illuminating their face, the heat, the sound design, the crossguard digging into and burning Finn's shoulder. It all felt so physical and real and scary in a way a lightsaber duel never could before this movie.

Action is meaningless if there are no stakes or internal character struggle behind it. If you aren't invested in the characters, who gives a shit?

Yes, so I want both. Neither the OT or the PT gave me that. But if I have to put the two on a weight, I still prefer mindless fights over the shit anyone could do playing with sticks.

Anyone else think it was a bit weird that they sort of glossed over mourning over Han's death? I was expecting a funeral scene or some sort of acknowledgement beyond Leia sitting down in pain.

Yes, and Luke not turning up like he did in ESB to help Han.

The hate for the Ewoks is stupid in my opinion, especially when put against the "there were supposed to be Wookies" argument. Yeah, it totally makes sense for the Empire to build the Death Star shield generator on a planet full of angry 8 foot tall beasts instead of a planet full of 3 foot tall teddy bears that don't even care that much.

Ugh, I still think Yoda should be above using a lightsaber (as should Palpatine)

So the tips of Rey's staff kind of looked like Darth Maul's emitters. Could this be the basis for a lightglaive? Think it would be kind of cool to see something like that.

We do?

Speaking of sound design, one of the coolest elements of TFA was hearing Ren's lightsaber light up when he was offscreen. It happened twice I think, both when he was hunting our heroes, and it added a palpable sense of tension knowing that he was out there, somewhere offscreen, stalking his prey.

Just returned. Right now I feel this was the best cinematic experience in my life. Loved, loved, loved it. Fantastic young actors, great cinematography, splendid music, cool design, classic storytelling and really fun to watch too.

Fin is hilarious, Poe is awesome, Kylo is wicked and Rey is boss! And man, Daisy is gorgeous just on top.

I don't get the connection between the Republic and the Resistance? With the New Order looking like Nazi 1 on 1 I feel they are both kinda like political parties within the Republic.

I don't mind that it is not thoroughly explained. Actually I like that so much that was obviously very mundane in this universe is not explored just for the audience. It's part of what made the first triology interesting and the prequels awful.

One question though, did they destroy Coruscant? I don't know if I got that right. If so bold move from Abrams imo.

So hux, phasma, and kylo - we never see them escape but any word on dead vs alive? Of course kylo is but what about the other two?

I don't really have a problem with the Ewoks from a story perspective, but from what I've heard, their inclusion was purely a money making exercise and the story an after thought.

Saw it yesterday night and liked it a lot. If I were to make a list

First the bad:

-The planet sized death star v3 was just plain stupid. I can suspend disbelief just fine but I have a hard time buying the empire built THAT in between the last deathstar and now. And what do you know it was so easy to blow up again, they didn't even have to use the force like Luke did. It was too convenient and stupid.

-On that note the plan to attack was super rushed. It was literally two minutes of "ok we take down the shields and blow shit up, ok lets go woo"

-Andy Serkis's cg emperor replacement was shit. Why the fuck did they make that cg. Has absolutely none of the charisma and evil of Palpatine.

The good:

-The new actors are amazing. Rey and Finn both knocked it out of the park. If it wasn't for the great chemistry between them I wouldn't have liked this movie but they recaptured the magic of the original trilogy thanks to those actors.

-bb8 was fucking awesome.

-Really loved the environments and attention to detail.

All in all it was a damn good star wars even with it's flaws. Really looking forward to the sequel and seeing those characters grow. Also Finn better not be fucking dead, I am not sure if I heard a heartbeat at the end when he was lying on the table or if they left the question hanging.

So hux, phasma, and kylo - we never see them escape but any word on dead vs alive? Of course kylo is but what about the other two?

hux escaped and took Ren with him. Phasma should be dead. However people sy she's been confirmed for Episode 8...which confuses me. She was worthless.

So hux, phasma, and kylo - we never see them escape but any word on dead vs alive? Of course kylo is but what about the other two?

Pretty sure the one First Order dude that is told to stay at his post mentions Hux taking off. I think Snoke told Hux to gtfo, too.

Hux is alive.
Phasma could go either way but personally I'd find it hilarious if she were just Boba Fett'd and Sarlaac Pit'd in that garbage shute.
Kylo was retrieved by Snoke to complete his training. He'll be back in some form. I think he'll be the redemption story of the ST.

So hux, phasma, and kylo - we never see them escape but any word on dead vs alive? Of course kylo is but what about the other two?

All alive.

We actually do get word on Hux in the movie though. That lesser New Order officer bursts into the Snoke holochamber because one of the staff tells him that Hux has already fled the planet. Dude saw which way the wind was blowing.

I can't imagine either Hux or Phasma died offscreen, they'll be back.

If we know garbage chutes/trash compactors, we know you can escape from them.

Yeah, first when Rey and Finn right out into the forest, and then again when Rey is on her own.

1) The Republic is the current legitimate government in the galaxy, and they're funding the Resistance against the First Order, which seems to be a legacy militia helmed by leftovers from the Empire with a massive grudge against the Republic which they see as an illegitimate splinter group.

2) They destroyed the "Hosnian system," which was the current seat of the Republic as well as (apparently) the place where their main fleet was based. According to new EU content, the capitol moves as new leaders are elected.

hux was sent to pick up kylo.

I assume phasma evacuated because there has been talk about her having a bigger part in episode 8

The Resistance is a militia group created by Leia and friends to thwart the upstart First Order. The planet destroyed was Hosnian Prime (New Republic capital, analogous to Coruscant)

Kylo is certainly alive and the scene with Snoke telling his lackeys to pick them up is supposed to show he got off.

EDIT: Hux was told by Snoke to pick up Kylo, so he's likely alive. Same with Phasma who's apparently going to be in the next movie.

The movie also has this problem with Maz Kanata, who vanishes from the movie after giving Finn the lightsaber.

I'm going to say alive. At least for Hux. He ran to the Supreme Leader who told him to bring back Kylo to him. So I assume him and Kylo retreated off the planet. Phasma we just dont know but I think it would be lame if that's how her character died.

Whew... I just saw the movie this morning. My expectations were exceeded, and they were very high. I grew up with Star Wars and this was, as others put it, a total palette cleanser after the prequel trilogy. I love where they're going with this and I'm already anticipating the next movies in the series.

The lightsaber fight at the end was one of the best in the series, but when Rey started wailing on Ren I was worried for a moment that Ren was going to pull an Emporer and say "yes, let the hate flow through you" and she would be tempted by the dark side. It could have just been intensity and not anger or hate.

Han's death was sad but I had a feeling it would happen. Harrison Ford's in his 70's and I couldn't see him committing to several more years of filming a role that in the past he wanted to move on from. I thought he and Chewie would go out together somehow but I'm glad Chewie survived. I didn't see the Ben Solo connection coming at all though!

Yeah the score is incredible. So somber and carries the full weight of what is happening between the two of them.

Yeah, nothing will ever top ROTJ's final battle. The music, choreography, and camera work are all on point. Luke temporarily going dark side and wrecking Vader was awesome. Vader's face turn at the end to save Luke is one of the few things in movies that will actually get a tear in my eye.

Also, yeah, ROTJ is glorious. I don't understand at all why that movie gets as much shade thrown at it as it does.

Yup me too. When he turns his head and decides to protect his son I was having a hard time fighting the ole man tears.

ROTJ is amazing though. Watching it again its solid the whole way through for me. Also I hate to admit it but this part gets me a bit emotional as well.

I hope Rian Johnson does not have Luke using a lightsaber.

Doubt he would initially, he would already have one instead of being handed one by Rey, and he will probably let Rey have the blue one during her training and after.

My guess is Rey loses the saber at the end of VIII when she kills Kylo and/or falls to the dark side, and comes back in IX with a new one (double lightsaber or whatever). She HAS to go through some Luke-like RotJ transformation in IX. Luke would pick it up and fight with the saber for the first time in IX.

Maybe not though, Luke could die in VIII. But I'd think he'd lose to Rey in IX.

Do the books go more into the state of the universe? It wasn't clear to me if the republic was a war with the first order at the start of the movie, since it sounded like it didn't officially support the resistance. Also, was one of the planets they blew up the capital of the republic? It felt like the movie kind of brushed past that.
