Would people be pissed if Rey was moving and fighting like this by IX?

With Rey having that staff it'd be actively dumb if she didn't end up with a double-sabre.

yoda vs dooku and yoda vs sheev is soo cringeworthy.

Really hope we wont see a 60+ year old Luke fight (with a lightsaber) in episode 8 or 9.

One question though, did they destroy Coruscant? I don't know if I got that right. If so bold move from Abrams imo.

There's an official book you can buy discussing details of the movie, and it's stated in there that it's some other system that starts with an 'H'. Coruscant is not the HQ of the New Republic. In the movie, it's left a little unclear.

Quick Question that I was wondering on the re-watch of ROTJ.

The moment where Luke breaks and decides to kill Palpatine Vader stops him. Now Palpatine obviously expected it thinking Vader did it out of a sense of loyalty to him but...

If killing Palpatine in a rage would have started Luke on a path down the darkside then Vader was likely saving him even then right?

Look how evil that motherfucker looks compared to the shitty cg character we got in TFA.

Honorable mention: Finn vs FN-B4D455 (since it's not a lightsaber vs lightsaber fight I didn't include it)

I prefer the name FN-TR8R better for him.

But man seriously what a complete and utter badass.

He's just a regular stormtrooper, and he sees a lightsaber ignited against a stormtrooper in battle for the first time in 30 years and what does he do? He drops his blaster and rushes him with a an electro tonfa.

Well, just got of my second showing. Put me in the group that loves it even more the second time. And now seeing it a second time, the overall feel of the movie is so much different than A New Hope. I think in time people will see it's much less similar than originally thought to be.

Also, instantly I could hear people say "She is definitely Luke's daughter". I just can't help but think they're wrong. That would be way to obvious of a choice. She's gonna be of Sith blood I just know it. I didn't notice during my first viewing just how much she fights like Palpatine. So much.

Oh shit, you know what, you're right. Palpatine had a hardon for doing lunging stab attacks, and that seemed to be Rey's go-to move. She did it like three or four times. Her lightsaber style was totally him.

I still think the movie is telegraphing hard that she's Luke's daughter. Remember the trailer voiceover, they reused ROTJ's monologue to imply a familial passing down of the Force from Luke to someone else. And that final scene is totally father and daughter.

I know we want these grand sweeping conspiracy theories to pan out, like Darth Darth Binks, but we have to remember these movies plots still have to be consumed by the general public, who maybe don't have the investment to see a payoff hearkening back to the Prequel Trilogy.

I thought the command room and the throne reception room were in different areas and that Hux had gone to ask Snoke what to do, with Snoke telling him to get Ren and get out. I guess because it was a long shot, I mistook Hux for that other commander. That is hilarious if Hux just up and noped it right out of there.

I thought that was Hux going to Snoke at the end too, and I've seen it 3 times now...

I still think it's Hux... If not, then damn, that random Lieutenant mind tricked me

So was this the original plan in the OT? Lightsabers were for Jedi, Sith and Dark Side users didn't use lightsabers?
I rewatched the OT last week and the disdain that the Emperor says "Jedi weapon" made it seem that lightsabers were something only Jedi used while those in tune with the Dark Side had other abilities (ie force lightning). And Vader only had a lightsaber due to his Jedi history and training, but it wasn't the norm

I do think people need to get over this mindset that Saber fights shouldn't be choreographed like that.

It makes sense in the OT because Vader is very limited, Obi Wan is old, Luke really had no formal Saber training.

These other fights are against people well trained in Saber combat and very in tune with the force. I don't mind graceful fighting as long as it makes sense. The Maul fight is better for it.

The biggest thing I learned from the new star wars movie:

I will NEVER let my kids be the "I have never seen Star wars" person.

The thing is do you hide the prequels from them, and take the risk of them watching them somewhere without you sitting there giving them the proper context?

Do you ensure they only see the despecialized editions?

These aren't easy questions for a parent to answer.

Okay, so we must assume that the Republic doesn't have the means to build their own army (yet)? Or the Resistance is probably like an armed NGO.

How are the odds that Rey is Ren's twin sister? Would be a nod to the old EU too.

Unlikely since Han and Leia had no "parental" reaction at all to her. Most likely she is Luke's daughter. Her being a Kenobi is a very interesting theory too.

Couldn't that simply be from tapping in to the Darkside ?

It's more that the Republic doesn't seem to have the fortitude or stomach to militarize fully. Hence Leia creating the militia to stop what she sees as the inevitable resurgence of the old Empire in The First Order.

My interpretation is that they didn't want to let Luke off so easy. Killing the emperor right then and there wouldn't bring out his anger to the fullest so he might not have turned. Having to fight his dark side father trying to do it would really hammer it home. Even that wasn't successful, so obviously they had to have some layers of frustration for Luke.

All this "Yoda and Palpatine are above using lightsabers" is just fan-concocted bullshit that isn't supported at all in the OT. Is it because they're old? Obi-Wan is in his 60s in A New Hope and nobody gave him shit about using a sword. The old martial arts master who is the most powerful in his order is pretty much a trope in action films.

Doesn't translate well to gifs. But the way the camera moves while they fight, and how they sound during the fight has physicality, which is way more than what the prequels offered.

If physicality is all you're after, I suppose I see why you prefer one above the other.

But it is was also considered an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.

George said that Yoda wouldn't have used a lightsaber back when he was making the OT. I assume he thought the same of Palpatine.

That is so true. When she fought Kylo she turned really menacing and just at the end snapped out of it. I did think to myself: Now that's Sith material. More so than Kylo actually. He is just a confused Jedi.

So,

As I understood it...

...Rey went from a peaseant to a Master jedi in a couple of hours.

I felt the movie was made to a much much younger generation than mine (I'm 30ish)

Luke says he's looking for a Great Warrior in ESB, and Yoda's first response is, "Wars not make one great."

It doesn't preclude him from being a great warrior, but it's incongruous.

If physicality is all you're after, I suppose I see why you prefer one above the other.

But it is was also considered an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.

I mean if they're looking to kill each other, I'd at least expect them to put in some effort, not tip toeing around.

Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is

Unless what he really meant was:

"JUDGE ME BY MY SIZE DO YOU? AND WELL YOU SHOULD NOT, FOR MY ALLY IS THE FORCE... AND I CAN SPIN AROUND REAALLY FAST!"

I don't think it carries the weight and tension of a good sword fight where a life is on the line. Flipping and twirling around to strike constantly comes across more like a dance, where either combatant isn't allowed to make the killer blow until the numbers are up. For me it's the difference between a martial art fight and a Bourne like fight. One is a dance and a lot of blows and blocks don't make sense/have little weight to them. The other is a frenzied fight for life. Both are entertaining, but I buy the latter much more.

Sheev sounds much worse to me.

Sheev is goofy as fuck. But Snoke is just plain lol.

Darth Snooky.

Really? I felt the exact opposite. I felt it had way too much pandering for the 40-50 year old bitter fans to flood them with nostalgia.

More like early Padawan, same as Kylo (experienced Padawan). Rey was mostly fleeing from the battle though.
