[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I'd love for Hayden Christensen to appear as a Force Ghost to Rey or Kylo in Episode VII just to piss off the prequel haters. Rian Johnson is a fan of the prequels after all.

I'd be 100% okay with Hayden Christensen getting a chance to act in a Star Wars movie with a competent director and writer for once.

I forgot how much swagger Jedi Luke had. What a bad ass.

Actually makes me wonder how Rey's wardrobe and overall design will change over time.

well, the costume she got in the end was already far less "desert flower". I dig the armwraps and the capri shorts, though.
It's great that she's not wearing clothing that is specifically aimed at emphasising her female physique just for the sake of it. Her outfit seemed rather practical.

We all make fun of it, but it ended with him banging Padme. Guess it worked.
And then he choked pregnant Padme. I wouldn't call that 'working'.

Saw it last night. Girlfriend and I left the theater liking it but also feeling a bit lukewarm (heh) about the whole thing. It didn't knock our socks off, but it was pretty fun, had some cool/emotional moments, and set things up for a (hopefully) vastly superior sequel, which is more than you can say about the any of the prequels. It really is derivative of the first film, though, with the whole Starkiller plot falling especially flat.

Thank God for Kylo Ren, though. I like all the newcomers, but Ren feels like he adds something legitimately new to these films, even though he's basically just Anakin Skywalker done right. I hope Episode VIII will be as much his story as Rey's, with the movie juxtaposing Rey's training under Luke with Ren's training under Andy Serkis. Really explore the philosophical differences between the light and dark sides. Have Rey teeter on the very edge of falling to the dark and have Ren (and Finn!) help pull her back, finally redeeming himself in the process.

I think it would be really cool if a potentially fallen Rey were portrayed as an even greater danger than a fallen Ben. She's definitely a natural at this whole Force thing. In TFA, it plays a bit like an ass-pull... but what if they made it a legit part of the plot? She's a Force prodigy with near limitless potential... for good or ill. That dynamic could make the next movie really compelling stuff.

I'm thinking Kylo put Rey on Jakku given his reaction to hearing about a girl involved with the droid escape. I know he's fragile but he threw one hell of a hissy fit.

Wait, simple timeline question:

Luke is training (unspecified number?) Jedi, one of whom is Ben/Kylo, and when Ben/Kylo goes off the reservation Luke quits? Is that right

Hnnnnnngggg. Never will those nip shots be topped

I really hope they don't do a Boba Fett spin off. Let him get a comic, novel whatever but the movies should be reserved for the main storylines. I'd much rather see a Obi Wan or Knights of Ren spin off. Or better yet Obi Wan movie and Knights of Ren Netflix miniseries.

The movie implied that Luke tried to bring him back from the dark side but failed. I guess he packed his bags after that.

Is there a "canon" explanation to how Anakin's Lightsaber is recovered after Luke's hand gets cut off?

The only explanation is that it was not the piece seen falling in ESB. So if it was never seen going to a place it could not be recovered - Bespin - then it is still on Cloud City. That is canon.

But RoTJ has all three force ghosts in their robes. Even the unaltered OG run pre-Hayden. ROTJ was still before PT.

You are right, they did it in RotJ. Well, they basically made Star Wars up as they went along. Other examples for this are Darth Vader becoming Luke's father in ESB and Leia becoming his sister in RotJ.

This is what I posted on my immediate reaction back on Thursday:

The thing I loved about the duels were they actually looked like sword fights and had a lot of weight behind them, instead of a choreographed set piece of twirling and back flips.

Agreed.

Sabre fights resembled more of Return Of The Jedi style of fighting. Emotional and all.

We all make fun of it, but it ended with him banging Padme. Guess it worked.
I'd say it was his wicked awesome force powers. He didnt have to say anything. Im on the side that I would be OK with Hayden showing up again. With proper direction it could work just fine. If he is still a whinny brat... that I do not forgive.

Very plausible. Been waiting for her family to come back when her family was always Luke and his wife and were never going back to Jakku.

Also, something I'd forgotten. Kylo mentions she dreams of the ocean and a green island.

Also, why do these people keep thinking that abandoning the prodigy on a desert planet makes them safer from anything? The force finds a way to put them in the game, she should have been training all these years.

To hide her force abilities.
Another interesting comment regarding Luke being her father is the fact that on the same desert planet, not too far away from Rey is an old rebel leader who know who Kylo Ren's father is and just so happens to have a map to Luke. The map his daughter would need were she ever to come into her own, discover the truth and go seeking her father.

Rey can't complete her training until she goes through some fucked up shit, so no way is she making her own sabre until IX.

There's a multitude of reasons I can't see them dragging that out. Especially if Johnson engages a time skip for Episode VIII. If it's multiple years later and she's not carrying one I'll be shocked.

Lmao white t shirt Padme is "practical". That costume exists only to be sexy af. And boy does it succeed. Edit oh I misread.

Wait, simple timeline question:

Pretty much. Unclear if his other students were killed or joined Kylo or what. I sort of figure at least one of those is true to drive Luke out.

Because I need to see Bastilla Shan's doppleganger on screen, goddamnit

Amen.

The evidence is she did those things. She's scavenging around and selling parts. That she can pilot ships is shown to us. That she understands ships and how they work and what the parts do is shown to us. Movies are a visual medium. If you want an audience to know a character can do something, have them do it. This "I need to know exactly how she learned those things!" is weird.

Abrams commented that Kasdan pushed him to be more a show, not tell, director in this movie. It doesn't help that the explanations are buried in random comic books and EU books, though.

Should be OT3's title.

Yep.

Did Kylo murder some of Lukes students in the order?

Yup. It seems everyone assumes that Luke exiled himself. Which he kinda does but Han said there are rumors that he was looking for the first Jedi Temple.

My guess is yes, Luke is distraught over the his school, being destroyed and losing his nephew to the Dark side. But he's looking for or found the temple because he knows of some greater threat and needs answers.

Also, something I'd forgotten. Kylo mentions she dreams of the ocean and a green island.

Yep. Luke being her father, they can share visions of places even without ever visiting them. Luke had never been to Bespin but saw a city in the clouds through the Force, probably through Leia.

Is there a "canon" explanation to how Anakin's Lightsaber is recovered after Luke's hand gets cut off?

The movie was actually supposed to open with the light saber drifting through space and eventually landing on the planet Maz Kanata calls home. Basically, the weapon fell out of Bespin and drifted in space for a long time. The idea was canned a while ago, though.

Full quote:
Interviewer: As far as those "pre-existing" Star Wars films go, I'm a defender of the prequels - all of the prequels. I do feel that they - both the good things and the bad things about them tap into what's true about the original films in a way that's just fantastic to experience; and possibly uncomfortable to experience? When you're an adult and watching these. Yet, that's what I do like about them. So my question for you is, am I crazy?

Johnson: No, actually I don't think you are at all. I think there's something really beautiful to the prequels and they have a real - I dunno - when you step back, there was an interesting, one of these mashup videos that was put out recently where someone cut all three of the prequels into like, a six-minute trailer, and when you watch that... I dunno, you watch the shape of the whole thing and the way the whole thing is laid out, and there's a beautiful elegance to it. But I will say that with these movies, we're trying to harken back to the like, feel and the tone of the original Star Wars Christmas Special.

[Audience laughs]

I'd say it was his wicked awesome force powers. He didnt have to say anything. Im on the side that I would be OK with Hayden showing up again. With proper direction it could work just fine. If he is still a whinny brat... that I do not forgive.

Whoa, are you implying that he Killgraved Padme? Jesus, that would put the PT in a completely different light...

That was what I took from the scene of Kylo standing in the rain during Rey's visions. Most of the things shown were what happened in the past to Luke, so I assumed that scene was when Ben became Ren.
She also sees a snowy forest foreshadowing being on the starkiller base.. I think the image of Kylo and the Knights of Ren is looking into the future... maybe.

After a re-watch I think my favorite scene is when Rey gets the lightsaber and the force theme plays, a very powerful moment. Also, when her and Kylo are face to face and there's a close up of Rey focusing on the 'light' presumably.

Ew. Let's stay as far away from Legacy of the Force as humanly possible.

I'm just saying. It be pretty "coincidental" if Rey turns out to be his brother. Both children of Han and Leia, Ren kills Luke's wife, Rey eventually has to kill her own brother. It's exactly the same lol which is why it won't be that way.

Yep. Luke being her father, they can share visions of places even without ever visiting them. Luke had never been to Bespin but saw a city in the clouds through the Force, probably through Leia.

I kinda took that as Luke just seeing a vision of the future. His friends were in trouble and they were on Cloud City.

Although your idea is very interesting.

I'm thinking Kylo put Rey on Jakku given his reaction to hearing about a girl involved with the droid escape. I know he's fragile but he threw one hell of a hissy fit.

Kylo knew where Rey was, he would have killed her soon as he "turned into" Kylo.

I agree that he threw the hissy fit when he heard a girl was involved, so my guess is he knows of Rey, but didn't have anything to do with putting her on Jakku.

Would you guys agree that from a plotting perspective, that the finale of TPM actually works better than TFA? I'm talking about setting up all the various players involved, what the strategy is, how the goal is achieved and the pacing in general?

I don't mean dramatically, I mean mechanically, the way it's all built
