So, what's the general consensus then, is this a good steam sale? This is actually my first one so I have nothing to reference it to.

I think I might buy Undertale. I don't know if it'll get much cheaper than £5.50 considering how popular it is.

Still haven't really had a proper look at the sales other than going through the queue (which didn't give me any steam trading cards!).

Undertale will surely be cheaper at some point in the future, but it's well worth that amount.

As for whether this is a good sale, if there's stuff you want to pick up at good prices, then it's a good sale. Much of the "Steam sales used to be so much better, they're shit now" narrative is from people (like myself) who have already spent thousands in years past and can't look past the fact that there are plenty of people coming into this fresh who will be amazed at the discounts.

I guess it's not a bad sale, even if most of my wish list isn't discounted a lot, but it's not an interesting or fun sale. Steam Sales were so loved because they were events where everyone came together every 8/12/24 hours in excitement over the new deals. It's just not the same. I personally will spend much much less. In past sales I easily spent 100€, in the autumn sale I spent nothing and I'm already done after spending 8€ on this one.

Bought Star Wars collection just for force unleashed 1 + 2. They're really bad, so tried to refund the purchase. Steam wants to remove kotor 1 and 2 from my library as well, which I had bought separately at full price when they were released on Steam :|

We had a pre-christmas local gaming event at work. Look, it's 4 Steam controllers!
(and various other stuff)

Is the steam controller any good? Looks awfully inconvenient (too fat, and those thouch pads don't look like they can be used as a D pad).

Grrr, I want to write horror game recommendations, but it's hard on Mobile for me.

When I'm actually settled I want to make a comprehensive detailed list of some niche (mostly horror) games, but I'll try to make a few posts advertising one game oer post. Maybe I can handle that.

And it's mentioned above, but if for some reason you don't own Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth by now, I do recommend it. Also recommend the fan patch to fix some glitches on newer machines.

Replayed it earlier this year, it's very well paced, has a lot of variety, and good mix-ups between horror, action, stealth, and adventure games. Personal favorite Lovecraft game.

haha that happened with some of the games in the duke nukem bundle thing. It was okay since the bundle was in a current bundlestars bundle and I rebought at a lower price.

Well, we have a whole thread about it.
What I can tell you is that all 4 Steam controllers were in use all the time.

Personally, I think it's far superior to a standard dual analog controller in every game in which you have to aim, incomparably superior by default in mouse/kb games (since those are basically unplayable on any other controller), and also better for most everything else because of the 2 additional buttons in easy reach. It also feels really good to hold IMHO (certainly not "too fat"), but that's obviously subjective.

Where I wouldn't use it are D-pad focused 2D games, but I have an arcade stick for those. I've never been a believer in the "1 input device for every job" philosophy ;)

I make a list of games I'm really interested in every time there's a sale, and then 90% of my purchases end up being stuff I stumble across and buy randomly.

I had to wish for christmas a new PS4 controller and Xbone controller because Steam controllers are not available to be ordered from here.

More importantly, how well does it work for D-pad focused 2D RPGs?
DS4 is really great for Final Fantasies/Dragon Quests, can't imagine using an arcade stick for playing these. :)

I think it greatly depends on how attached you were to dailies/flash deals.
I find it somewhat relaxing to not feel compelled to check Steam every 8 hours.

The actual deals are in quite a few cases much better than I expected (e.g. PoE 60% off, which I'll continue to post ;)) and there are lots of games at the cheapest price they've ever been, so I don't think anyone can make a conclusive argument that it's objecively a bad sale.

Agree with all of this. I especially like being able to wait and buy things later, which gives me time to accrue and sell cards.

I think those are one genre where the input device really doesn't matter much. I use a DS3 for those purely out of habit.

So...
How's Dungeon of the Endless?

Fun. Unique. Worth the price.

But it will take 1-2h to really understand what's going on in the game, with the mix of tower defence, rogue-likes/lite and lite dungeon crawling.

Is Sleeping Dogs worth $7.49?
Is Binary Domain worth $3.99?

help me out pls.

If you're going to play them, then yes. Otherwise, no. ;)

I didn't like Sleeping Dogs very much until I started to think about it as a modern variant of Streets of Rage mixed with some GTA. Then it clicked for me.

That happens a lot with me because 90% of the time, stuff of my wishlist never seems to get discounted or only receives a tiny discount.

Both are reasonable good for the price but Sleeping Dogs is probably the better value.

Anyone have experience with Empyrion - Galactic Survival?

it looks like it has everything from survival to building your own spaceship and that is what scares me.

I'm going to plug Grim Dawn for those who enjoy ARPG hack-and-slash games like Diablo. It's currently 40% off, bringing it to $14.99. Several of its developers are the same people who worked on Titan Quest if anyone is familiar with that also great ARPG (which is $4 for the game and its expansion - pick this up too!). It's still in early access but the devs are aiming to be content complete in the next build release (which should be 1-3 months). Despite that I've already invested hundreds of hours into it and could invest hundreds more.

No One is buying Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of Earth...

Gaf, I Am Disappointed !
I'm still thinking about it!

My haul so far:
- Broken Sword V: The Serpent's Curse
- Gabriel Knight - Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary
- Legend of Kay

Haven't really paid attention to a lot of the other sales this year so maybe that's why I find this Wintersale to be pretty great. :)

Sleepy Dogs is really fun. Great combat system and a really interesting open world setting. Watch all of the Giant Bomb videos of it if you need more proof.

That said, I'm surprised to see it at over $5 this many years out. Guess it's an updated version or something.

Is Fairy Fencer F any good? I'm in the mood of playing some silly JRPG.

Personally i liked it a lot. I thought it was funny, the story was interesting enough to want to keep playing, the characters were likable (allthough the protagonist started to annoy me a little as time went by) and the battle system was decent. I am suprised it is not more popular.

I'm going to go from older games to newer games I've decided, and to give my opinions on games others might not recommend/heard of.

Starting with;

Cold Fear - $4.99

Cold Fear was a Xbox/PS2/PC action-horror game that came out on the heels of Resident Evil 4. It's a Resident Evil clone through-and-through, but something a bit interesting about it is that is sort of mixes elements of the older and newer RE's. The game uses a mix of fixed camera angles while you're exploring, and behind the shoulder while aiming and in specific areas. Combat focuses on shooting weakpoints to stun/damage enemies, but also has the back-tracking and sort of progression you'd expect from older RE's. PC version is the best version of the game, but it is an older port and missing a few more modern things (like windowed mode).

The game has an oceanic setting and makes full use of the setting I feel. It's a dark and stormy night at sea, and the ship churns and turns. Furniture can slide back and forth as the ship goes, strong ocean waves can sweep you off the deck. Part of the ship is flooding with water, and a number of the enemies are ocean themed. On that, some of the monsters in Cold Fear are quite unique for this type of game. A few are a bit frustrating (like this one starfish-like enemy with impossibly long tendrils), but it's a fun selection.

I think the biggest strength to the title was the setting, notes you read (they were actually quite interesting), and though it plays something like a poor-man's RE4, I still enjoyed the game. It does have something of a weak ending, but opening up the ship and second location, exploring it and managing supplies and fighting sea monsters, all with an interesting backdrop story and nice little enviormental hazards thrown in and traps, made it a fun little experience.

I'd recommend it to those who liked the B-Resident Evil clones from back in the day with a slightly more modern twist. Or an idea of a rougher RE4 on a boat sounds fun to you.
