[Push Square] This RAM Crisis Is Looking Like a Nightmare for the PS6

PS6 even if $1,000 will be a better value than a PC with equal performance if things stay this way . mark this quote.

also its not just ram but ssd storage as well.

Well, shit, I smell another COVID situation for next gen consoles launch (for different reasons obviously).
I mean, next-box is supposed to come out 2026-2027 and the PS6 in 2027, their R&D is surely done by now (?) but what about the actual manufacturing? wouldn't this impact that significantly ?

Honest question btw
Zen 6 has been delayed. NeXtBox would be early 2027 at the very earliest.

The big issue is none of the memory fabs are signed long term contracts. They are only doing a few months, and to allow them to keep increasing the prices with each new signing. I could see the Steam Machine and consoles all put on hold until further notice and things stabilize. But the AI bubble could pop in a month for all we know so no one can say anything with any certainty.

Doomers the shortage will be abated eventually. It will not last forever(lol).

Either demand will fall or production will increase. It may take a couple of years but I don't think it will take 3.

PS5 has no competition and the generation can keep going to the end of this decade as a last resort.

Sony is one of the few companies that can buy RAM at the scale of the AI data centers. Yes it'll be more expensive, but people are worrying about a problem that is year's off and that Sony won't be a helpless bystander of either.

This article is clickbait, like every other product they have to think about supply costs but it also depends on when they are going to be building the machines.

They should stretch the generation regardless. PS4 was long in the tooth when the PS5 launched but even the base PS5 is good for another three years. Focus on the games.
I believe that's the plan. It has always been the plan when you look at the roadmaps.

Gaming hardware is fucked for the next year or so, so it should be saying buy now. Whether it's a PC or console.
I'm hunkering down with my ps5, 4090pc with 64GB of gold, steam deck, portal, quest 3s, and psvr2 for the foreseeable future.

Trading in my PS5 Pro and investing in a tech index fund for the next two years in anticipation to buy the 6. AI goes up? My stock goes up. AI pops? The PS6 is cheaper.

Everything's turning up Woody, baby.

Discussed this in another thread, but if PS ends up having to be heavily subsidised, it changes the equation on whether it's really better to sell PC gamers a PS at a loss rather than just sell them the games directly on PC. This also increases the likelihood of a PS store on PC.

Honestly, I'd be completely fine if we all collectively agreed to delay next gen until 2030. Just lock in the GPU and console market with the current offerings until then. Let software and devs catchup.

It's all fun and games until the moment something breaks and you have to cough up those sweet $$$ on some overpriced crap.
Words cannot describe just how f-ed-in-the-ass I felt when my PSU croaked last year, taking down the motherboard alongside it.

Ram's best fit is with AI but you can't rule out things like consoles, animation etc.

It's more about the economy collapsing before the shortage ends and US citizens having similar buying power to Brazilians by the time the shortage is over.

PS6 is shipping late 2027? Problem will likely be resolved or reduced by then. Also the PS6 will use GDDR7, its only speculation that the supply chains will re-allocate to DDR5.

I would be more concerned about the Switch 2 and the Steam Machine witch literally use DDR5.
PS6 Handheld Canis, just like all other Windows/Xbox handhelds is using LPDDR5X ram. Even PS6 Orion and Xbox Magnus are supposedly going to have some allocations of LPDDR5X ram.
MLiD suggested that the PS6 should have 40 GB of RAM for AI and ray tracing.
While Orion could have 40 gb maximum, that would require the more expensive 4 gb modules. Those are likely going to be reserved for Discrete graphics cards like RTX 6090 or AMD equivalent.

PS6 Orion will likely have 30 GB GDDR7, while Canis has 24 GB LPDDR5X, and Magnus has 36 GB GDDR7.
Can older slower ram be used but at a higher bits bus?

Need to make big boards with lots of traces.
Orion has 160 bit bus though. Kepler said the specs are basically finalized.
