That's fair. So far they are fantastic though I thought Fynn was a bit too excitable, quick to react. Does that make sense? Like they took too long a look at the pages of "Joss' The Avengers Book of Quipping"

Movie was missing that kind of scene from ANH showing Star Killer actually cruising through warp or sublight.

Those were my thoughts too. I don't know if it's harder to imagine the planet moving from sun to sun using. "Conventional" engines or the damn thing not actually killing Suns but needing them to ignite?

Maybe it kills the sun and the whole solar system blows apart from the absence of the Suns gravity and the storm troopers just hold on the the longest, coldest ride ever with some crazy G-forces as they wait for a million years to be picked up by some other Suns gravity. Hahaha.

Maybe they figured it'd only need to be use a few times and then they'd have victory. I mean they almost took out the core Resistance after already taking out the Senate

I am a very, very long time listener of /Filmcast and yeah he's one of the best guests. They have had him on several times and I have been crossing my fingers that he'd come back at some point to promote VIII. Afterall, Dave & Co were big supporters way before most people knew who he was (the Brick and Brothers Bloom days)

... and then there are the after dark episodes, which is like a second podcast they used to do that was full of random conversation after the film review. They no longer do these, and it's too bad since it was full of some of the best conversation with guests. Sadly the enthusiasm the guys used to have for doing the podcast seems to have waned considerably. Their output and length of the pods has shrank by a lot, and it's very very rare for them to have guests on the show. It's a damn shame. Reminds me of the shambling corpse of The Simpsons in a lot of ways.

I believe the novelisation puts it a bit different:

Instead of slurping on stars like they’re hot, plasma-laden smoothies, Starkiller Base is powered by dark matter, which seems like a much more sustainable source of energy.

...

Starkiller Base doesn’t shoot a gigantic beam, but a ball of energy that is shot through sub-hyperspace, making it disappear just outside of the base, and then reappear just outside of its intended target. The ball of energy supercharges the target planet’s core, making it go supernova and burn up any nearby planets in the ensuing explosion.

I havent read the book, but my guess is that the base/planet is in a fixed position. The weapon's payload travels through 'sub-hyperspace' (whatever that might mean in Star Wars science, I interpret it as 'very fast and stealthy') so it isnt detectable.
Regarding the movie / star: I guess they drain the stars mantle / outer layer. I'm no astrophysicist but I believe as long as the fusion processes in the core continue; it will probably 'replenish'. Probably not on the movies timescale tho..

I bet they changed all that to make it more visually interesting.
 
Just read the last few pages and I'm wondering why a Rey being Luke's daughter reveal is considered boring?

I don't think such a reveal should be compared to the I am your father reveal. Vader wanted to lure Luke to the dark side, Luke however has to be terrified of another Skywalker / powerful force user picking up the family legacy after what happened with Kylo Ren.

The fact that he either knowingly abandoned his child or didn't even know about her, could now cause great torment on him and maybe even sway him to the dark side a little. Furthermore we don't even know in what state of mind Luke is after the Kylo Ren debacle, maybe he even went into exile to protect the Galaxy from himself... Could be great seeing Luke struggling with the reveal / accepting it.

And such a reveal wouldn't be any easier on Rey and could very well lead to her turning on him (at least for a short time). Rey could also turn into light sides Kylo Ren, struggling to pick up Luke's legacy, which would basically set up a Empire dynamic with her still being in a force fragile state vs Kylo who's now fully consumed by the dark side.
 
While watching the movie, my interpretation was that the Starkiller base (built out of a planet) was stationary (orbiting around the sun in its system). They charge it up until the sun goes out and has to recover (and then they can recharge). It was able to destroy planets far far away. Which would technically mean that the shots have to travel in hyper drive, but it's star wars so I won't get hung up on laws of physics....

My buddy went on a scientific rant about that shouldn't be possible because how can a planet be that close to the sun and people aren't melting lol

There's a lot, and I mean a lot of things that are wrong scientifically with the Starkiller idea to begin with, haha. Even by Star Wars standards tbh. Best to turn off your brain completely and enjoy the ride.
 
About Rey's father, I don't think any of the possibilities would satisfy me.

Being Luke's is too safe and predictable. On the other hand, I don't like the idea of the Skywalker bloodline dying.

Being a Solo wouldn't work. I don't think it's happening.

Same with Kenobi. I would enjoy that since it would surprise the audience and give an interesting symbolism to the whole thing, but I think it's impossible to do it in a way it doesn't sound completely ridiculous.

So what probably will happen is that Rey is not related to anyone we know. Instead, she will give birth to the next Skywalker. That way the bloodline lives on. I don't think Ben has any shot with her, so you know what that means. Don't pretend you didn't see the look on Luke's face. ;D

Just kidding.

Good! If you want more, be sure to check google cause I know I missed a few, especially of the Afterdark episodes. There's probably 2 or 3 more.

They really are worth listening to. I mean think about the surreal nature of it all: here is Rian Johnson, sitting down with a bunch of podcasters to review JJ's Star Trek reboot and in another episode Super 8. Who knew someday he'd be following JJ to direct a Star Wars film.
 
I feel like Rey being Luke's daughter makes people underwhelmed because it's so easy for people to fall into.... What I would describe as silent hill 2 syndrome? Repeating the same/similar twist falls flat no matter how you try and dress it.

That said TFA did that well with Kylo, just putting it straight out there. Due to JJ Abrams involvement in this first movie, I have to feel like there is indeed a further twist to any kind of connection Rey has with Luke.

Anyways, this thread is killing me. I gotta work in the morning. I'm out. So nice to talk to people about stuff I love. Thanks all.

Yeah he's one of those people that need logic he's not one to turn the brain off but what confuses me is if your a fan of star wars a lot of it shouldn't be scientificly possible but whatever he's entitled to his opinion

Yep I just gave up when he went into a full rant about the film and when he compared it being slightly better than I and maybe better than II I gave up talking to him.

It's actually tactically smarter than a Death Star. Build it on some abandoned planet far fucking away and unload when needed.

Or how does a planet drive around space? Would the surface not freeze and die as soon as you are too far from a sun? Star Wars is not Sci-Fi, its a space opera, complete fantasy. Jump to light speed Han? Sure, but it's still going to take tens of thousands of years to get to the other side of that galaxy...

I'm pretty sure it's a stationary planet. It's a base not a planetary ship.
