In the Art Of book, they actually refer to her character in early form as Yoda. Not literally meant to be Yoda himself, but that's how they labelled it haha. They knew what they were doing.
Damn it, I need this art book, I keep hearing of all these cool little production details like this. Let me check and see if it's at my local Barnes & Noble before I get my tickets for tomorrow's showing. Will be my first time seeing TFA in IMAX glory and the entire fam is going, will probably be like a whole new experience tbh.

That's more with Michael being awesome than to do with JJ I believe.

Really? I thought she was just flirting with him.

I keep hearing people say this but I didn't see it that way at all. Just looking at her face and listening to the tone in her voice it was super obvious to me that she was just humoring him and not actually giving a shit. Was hilarious.

Saw the movie again. I really, really loved the first act of the movie, specifically Rey's scenes. It's all so calm.

Payed attention to see of Kylo lost his right arm, and when he is the ground, I saw that he still had his hand. Two different takes as well.

Person of Interest says hi.

What did you want?
Honestly, I don't know. I read my first Star Wars EU novels recently (Thrawn trilogy) and thought that was a better direction for the series post-ROTJ - not perfect but far better for sure. I'm aware that it wouldn't work well as a movie (being 30 years later and all).

Something less same-ey as far as overall plot goes.

The faction setup was dumb. The resistance should have just been the New Republic's military. The New Order should have just been the Empire.

The NR shouldn't have been wiped off the map in 30 seconds.

I thought most of the New Order's designs didn't look good - some were far too clean and others overly Nazi-like (I know the empire of old was the same but it felt way more obvious in this movie).

There shouldn't have been a Death Star 3.

Phasma was mostly pointless. The cape was terrible.

Too much fan service.

I did like Rey, Finn, and Poe a lot. BB8 was okay.

That's some quick thoughts. I'm going to watch it again tomorrow so maybe I'll have a change of heart or more detailed criticism.

If Rey goes evil, she could kill Kylo with his own lightsaber after force stealing it when he dropped it fighting Luke, Luke yells nooooooo when Rey kills Kylo with it and she flees.

In IX when we see her again she would have a dual-wielding saber made out of Kylo's.

I'm also leaning more towards Finn being force sensitive. Being Force sensitive doesn't mean you are going to become a Jedi. The Force awakening doesn't have to exclusively apply to our pretty little white savior Rey. I think, going forward, we are going to see a lot more force sensitive characters in episodes 8 and 9. Major characters, and supporting characters. I feel this way about Finn, because of Maz's constant urging of Finn to use the lightsaber. When he says he needs a weapon, and Maz says, "You have one," and the looks she gives him imply that she knows more about him than him just being an awol Stormtrooper. She seemed to know that he would be able to use the lightsaber in some capacity. He very well could be just a guy, but I don't think so. He may not be as in tune with the Force as Rey, but Maz reminded us, the audience, that the Force is in all living things, whether you are aware of it or not. I think Finn will manifest more force potential in the next movies.

Got to watch it again last night and I agree. I've maintained it ,saw it discussed here and wavered, but I think he is again. During the Jakku assault when the bloodied hand touches his helmet that same force sound plays as the interrogations and when Kylo freezes Poe and his blaster shot. Maz still sees something in him from the conversation while ignoring his words. Then the his line of "taken from parents I'll never know" gives me indication that there is more to his story besides plucky comedic sidekick that has heart (tm). Not to mention in Falcon he gets a lot of 1-1 shots as Luke in ANH in the gunner position. Then the coma will be a plot point in the next film as he has to awaken.

I think they have left ambiguous but I'm leaning he has more of a future with it than not.

Yeah I agree with those. But overall I was happy with it. At least they didn't fuck it up completely.
I guess it strongly depends on what expectations people bring into this movie.

I don't think they'll ever do a proper extended cut. Because it could potentially mess with the canon. We'll definitely see all the deleted scenes though.

If they are smart, they will release an extended cut next summer. By that time, they should have a good idea of what unreleased footage is going to contradict Episode VIII (it should already be finished shooting by then) and just leave it on the cutting room floor.

Disney gets their summer Star Wars movie, a trailer for Rogue One, and the fans get a longer version of a movie they already love.

So what? It was fanservice done right IMO.

There was a bit too much of it for my taste. As an example, Han referencing the garbage chute rubbed me wrong -- felt like a really forced wink at the camera. We get it filmmakers -- you're Star Wars fans just like us. I hope we got all of that out of the way and that Ep VIII forges its own path more than this did.

I keep seeing folks mentioning that Han borrowing Chewie's gun was random and dumb. What those folks didn't notice is that Han first uses Chewie's gun to save Chewie after he gets shot on the freighter. There's a visible "woah" moment when Han first shoots it to establish that he never realized how powerful Chewie's weapon was.

It's a gag that's then brought back when Han asks to borrow Chewie's gun to get them out of a sticky situation when the First Order shows up.

Besides all that, the whole purpose is three-fold. Han avenging Chewie with Chewie's gun forshadows Chewie avenging Han, establishes that Chewie's gun is very powerful and thus would do a lot of damage to Kylo Ren, weakening him for his fight against Finn and Rey, it's a fun buddy moment that shows the friendly, adventurous relationship Han and Chewie have as well as how they work as one team, not two separate people.

So, anyone else wondering if Rey ends up with a double-sided lightsaber when she makes her own? Seems like it might be a good fit considering her use of a staff but I wonder if they'll be trying to leave some of the more gimmicky stuff from the prequels behind.

Looking at Kylo's saber it could go either way.

I think some of that was necessary to build back trust with the franchise. They did play it pretty safe with the story and characters with Finn's being the only real unique one. JJ and co have been upfront distancing themselves from the prequels and referencing the OT from the costumes, to the effects to the world building. If they started out as a new take on Star Wars I don't think the reception would be as positive. Now they have the trust again I think they are much more able to take the risks in 8-9.

I just really want a core character to have a yellow lightsaber for once. Those were always my favorite. Or any other color besides blue, green, or red.

Saw it. It was a decent movie. Lots of plot holes, the setup was very silly, some weird character decisions but overall a fun ride. Not a classic though.

I saw it in 2d and Maz and Snoke looked bad. Faces are made to be overly expressive, looked like there were no muscles under the skin, just a moving mouth causing the skin to stretch. I didn't know Serkis was in this but Snoke made some pouty face and I immediately recognized it was Serkis, he always over acts. If his CG characters were realistic he wouldn't have to over act, but he always does.

I say it in IMAX 3D and felt the same thing.

I wish they had used with make-up and practical effects, instead. Or maybe just make a better models.

I'm flipping back and forth with the soundtrack. It's the weakest of the series, but it still has great stuff in it. It just lacks a hook.

Yes. Agreed. It's not bad by any means, but it doesn't stand out compared to the rest of the franchised.

I just saw it too, posted in that other thread about Rey. I'm assuming we will know more about her in the next movie. I hope so because I was like "damn girl" when she used her mind control technique.

I don't know what to think right now. The movie had no dull moments but I'm not satisfied at all. I need to know more about Rey and why she can use the force. Also, Finn was so good. I wish Luke had more screentime but whatevs, felt nice to see Hamill again.

The whole reuse of the empire / imperials / first order drives me bananas. You can call Han shooting second as a flattening of his character but the whole goal of the OT is undemined by this movie.

They could have made the enemy army anyone else. Even take Mandalorians seeing a political opening and building up an army and your plot is exactly where it needs to be. All you need is cool looking guys in armour with big ships and Snoke as the leader. This way you are not doing retroactive plot damage or have to justify their continued existence.

They ended Vader and Palpatine's rule. And an entire galaxy isn't going to be safe from power hungry knuckleheads forever.

She might just very well use Anakin/Luke's

They did that and destroyed the empire, at least that was the implication. Like I said, make the enemy army anyone else and it works without having to undo the OT.

I get the nostalgia of wanting to see storm troopers, tie fighters, star destroyers, and so on but it wasn't necessary for the plot.

They didn't undo the OT. The galaxy has been at peace for almost 30 years. The First Order is an emerging threat in TFA.

There were still imperial personnel and assets left over. I mean it's pretty much impossible to completely wipe out a faction with the power and resources to build something like the Death Star... twice. I dunno, it makes sense to me but to each his own :)
