[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

The Force doesn't lose meaning if more people are force sensitive. And being force sensitive doesn't automatically mean you MUST become a Jedi. Jedi are like monks. Are all people that believe in spirituality religious? If you believe in spirituality, does that mean you have to join a religion? No. Of course not. The Force is no different. It already resides in all living things, according to the OT, and Maz in this movie.

The Force has awakened for some mysterious reason, and I think it is working through everything (Kylo, Rey, Finn, Poe, Luke, Leia, etc, etc), because of some unrest in the galaxy (probably initiated by Snoke's actions in the background).

Having all of our primary characters be force sensitive sets it apart from the OT, and leads to some interesting narrative potential. Luke's biggest failure was the destruction of his Jedi academy. I just don't see this trilogy letting Luke hold on to that L. I don't even think Luke is going to die in this trilogy, a subversion of the standard heroes journey trope where the death of the mentor spurs the heroes. I think this trilogy is going to see Luke Skywalker redeeming himself, even if he doesn't redeem Ben. I think the trilogy is going to end with the Jedi Academy being reborn, so Luke gets some resolution and redemption, and I think Rey is going to follow the path of the Jedi. I don't see Finn or Poe becoming Jedi, but I do think they are force sensitive. Maz is Force sensitive, and she is not a Jedi. I can see her instructing Finn and Poe in the next movie, while Luke instructs Rey. The numbered films may be about the Skywalkers, but having there be no other force sensitive characters is kind of absurd.

The problem with the PT wasn't that there were too many Jedi. It was that the movies were poorly written and executed, and the force characters lacked any sort of charm or humor, or humanity.

I like JJ's take on force sensitivity even though he admits it isn't canon. Basically that anyone could use the force if properly trained

I’m not someone who quite understands the science of the Force. To me Star Wars was never about science fiction — it was a spiritual story. And it was more of a fairytale in that regard. For me when I heard Obi-Wan say that the Force surrounds us and binds us all together, there was no judgement about who you were. This was something that we could all access. Being strong with the force didn’t mean something scientific, it meant something spiritual. It meant someone who could believe, someone who could reach down to the depths of your feelings and follow this primal energy that was flowing through all of us. I mean, thats what was said in that first film!

And there I am sitting in the theater at almost 11 years old and that was a powerful notion. And I think this is what your point was, we would like to believe that when shit gets serious, that you could harness that Force I was told surrounds not just some of us but every living thing. And so, I really feel like the assumption that any character needs to have inherited a certain number of midi-chlorians or needs to be part of a bloodline, it’s not that I don’t believe that as part of the canon, I’m just saying that at 11 years old, that wasn’t where my heart was. And so I respect and adhere to the canon but I also say that the Force has always seemed to me to be more inclusive and stronger than that."

What that paragraph says to me is that he's laying in a track where one of our characters is going to reintroduce that idea.

Which says to me it's kind of a decent possibilty Finn becomes a Force-user by the end of this trilogy.

I can't believe they cast someone so ugly.

huh

The way Kylo stared at Finn in stormtrooper outfit after he captured Poe made me believe Finn had some force to him.

That was the feeling I got from it as well.

I know it was the first movie, but TFA felt like it went a touch too far with the dangling threads. There's too much trilogy franchise confidence with this first movie which is concerning when it comes from the creators of Lost and Alias.

I wouldn't have cast Kylo as anyone else. Even with his helmet off he had this great uneasy feel about him. Fantastic casting.

As for Kylo staring at Finn, I base that purely on Kylo sensing hesitancy within him. He stuck out like a sore thumb I'm surprised he wasn't slapped for not shooting the people. Of course Kylo picked it up.

A friend saw the movie in french and said the baby robot was super cute.

Because bébé is the french word for baby. So she thought it's name was "Baby 8", which is the most horrible name for a robit.

You're right.

This is shallow.

Taylor Kitsch should've played Kylo Ren.

Oh please. They cast this guy as Harrison Ford's son:

This shit is bananas.

The official word is that the novelizations are canon except for the parts that contradict other parts. For example, the novelization of ANH says uncle Owen is Obi-Wan's brother but that's not canon.

This.

I think we should take what's in the TFA novelization with a grain of salt seeing as how it might not necessarily align with what's in the film.

I'd actually love for him to be more of a passive force user. Like Leia, but more action-oriented with it.

Adam Driver turned in a good performance but - and I hate being this shallow - I can't believe they cast someone so ugly. How did that happen?
Idiotic post.

The dude definitely looks distinguished, but I wouldn't call him ugly. He can pull off the sith look pretty well too.
