They do, except for the tits. The tits are pretty enormous for somebody who looks like they weight like 35kg.

I lived through that time period. Me and other 13 year olds were not that tall, lanky or developed. I mean, the waist proportion alone is all wrong for a 'normal' 13 year old too. Waists are rarely that pushed in at that age.

Its funny Lightning lovers want to trot this shit on every thread, when its really not.

Most people dont like her or are indifferent to her. The declining sales are there to corroborate it, and she is not talked about much as a character in forums or even real life talk, to someone not shit on her character.

A popular character that is still hated by some are characters like Rosalina from Mario, Elsa from Frozen (funny as this two use nearly exactkly the same design) or Isabelle from Animal Crossing. Just to name a few.
They have design and characteristics that attract lots of people (males and females) from all ages, even if theres still people that hate them because of that same tropes and design elements they are using. But those characters sell, and the two companies (Nintendo and Disney, in this case) know it and merchandise them appropiately.
Lightning has neither of those, even if Toriyama tried time and time again to push it like she did. She has no selling momentum, and the tropes and designs she uses are only liked by a few number of people, even if they like to be vocal about it (theres basically no market for her outside of a small niche, and I can assure you thats not because she is an "anime" character, but just becuase she uses tropes of anime very few people like).
Cloud had the luck of being in the right moment at the right time, and in a good game. If not he would probably be hated similarly if he appered for the first time in similar Finals as XIII right now.

The problem with your logic is that this isn't Square using fashion to push Lightning, this is the other way around, Lightning is being used to push fashion products, & fashion designers have way more accurate metrics than the GAF consensus.

Rich girls like Lightning? Sell them expensive shit that is associated with her, that's marketing 101. That's why so many celebrities are used for these, if someone likes a certain band, a fashion company will use that band to sell their new clothing line.

False. She's been consistently voted as the favorite female Final Fantasy Character in fan polls.

Yea, the world of fashion is pretty weird. More so than this but this more so directly relates to gaming.

I find it amusing how people are making up their own reality & then choosing to live in it.

I hate the XIII trilogy, but I would be talking out of my ass if I said Lightning isn't popular, they wouldn't be trying to sell fashion stuff with her if she wasn't.

I don't know about that. Lightning Returns sold pretty poorly.

http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/01/japan-ranks-their-favorite-female-characters-from-the-final-fantasy-series/

As has been pointed out numerous times with that poll from various places it:
1) Is a fb poll that comes from a page with a measly 20k followers. The sample size is incredibly small and proves absolutely nothing.
2) The page itself did advertising for FF13 quite a bit at the time of that. The page itself had a bias for Lightning and that in turn would turn off people who didn't like her in the first place from even seeing the poll.
3) 13 was the current FF series. The FF protagonist of the recent FF game always leads any of these random polls simply by virtue of being the new protagonist. Most of them fall to the wayside years later with little fanfare.
4) The poll itself closed incredibly quickly and there's numerous ties within the poll itself, which only further goes to show how incredibly small the sample size for this poll was.

That combined with the fact that the FF13 series saw an incredible immediate tank in sales (seriously by the time we got to Lightning Returns, the game was barely moving) all leads me to believe that the vast majority don't actually like her as a character. She was pushed hard by SE at the time, that's all.

I don't know about that. Lightning Returns sold pretty poorly.

Side games always sell poorly, Final Fantasy X-2 sold poorly compared to X (which was the second best selling FF), & Yuna is still the most cosplayed character. Battlefield Hardline sold poorly, God of War Ascension, Gears of War Judgment, Resident Evil Revelations, Grand Theft Auto "stories" subseries.....etc.

Side games/spinoffs/prequels don't sell anywhere near as well as a mainline entry, that's always been the case, & not just in video games either.

Seriously why are some of you so assblasted over a character promoting a clothing line. This is no different than seeing a celebrity or a athlete you dislike advertising a product.

This isn't Square pushing her to the masses again, and if they are pushing her it's towards the Louis crowd.

please tell me how Lightning being part of some clothing promotion will harm your videogame experience that you have to resort to screaming out "waaaah why won't she die already!"

Even that being the case I could easily still see her as top 5 character easily if Square were to really do a high profile fan poll on this.

I am indifferent eventhough I actually like all XIII games a lot. But you do realise Lightning's character is a pretty big deal in Japan right? And that is where the merchandises are targeted at.

It's absolutely stupid and incorrect to think that the entire reason SE is using Lightning so much, by including her in as many games as possible and making as much merchandises as possible, is because "they want to shove her down our throat". The reality is that she is extremely popular in Japan and SE wouldn't have been doing any of this if she wasn't.

She is not a niche, nor is she irrelevant just because you think so, on the contrary she most likely IS one of the most popular FF characters ever created.

Is this real? Who looked at that and thought "yep... that's how an adult woman looks. Especially one which is supposed to be physically fit."

She looks like a giant head attached to a 13 year old's body.

I don't think she looks like a 13 year old...but she is absurdly thin for someone who's supposed to be fighting monsters for a living.

I still like her a lot but not the games she's featured in. She has a lot of style, swag etc. Don't really find this weird at all and she looks amazing.

Gaf threads about Lightning are always so visceral. I don't really understand why.

I thought it was cute and pretty looking. I think using fictional characters to promote real fashion clothing is an interesting concept.

This reminds me of that one time I walked around in a NYC shopping area with my mom, and she immediately went, "OMG LV bags!" and I looked and it was a wall of ugly brown/yellow mess. "Mom, that stuff is ugly"—her response was, "It's LV!!!!" (50+ Chinese lady)

The brand is probably stronger than the style right now lol

In Hong Kong and China they'd be bootlegging the stuff anyway

I mean, it makes no sense from either side. Cg models of your clothes aren't the best way to sell clothes. Promoting a character whose last game came out years ago and who doesn't have any coming up seems odd. It made sense when they did the first collaboration years ago when the 13 series was relevant. But honestly what massive lightning fan is going to drop a few grand on a lv leather jacket because lightning wore it. Or what lv fan is going to see lightning and wonder who that beautiful Cg woman is.

ITT people who don't understand that haute couture is not meant to be street fashion

She's wearing a double rider, this ain't haute couture, it's ready to wear shit. It's literally meant to be street wear.

LOL

Lightning Returns sold 277k on PS3 in Japan on the opening week(was the no.1 game). It was marketed entirely as lightning game and not even as a proper FF title.

For reference BloodBorne for example launched at 152,567 copies.

To even consider characters like Rosalina or Isabelle to be more influential or have more sales momentum is just...wow.They don't even have games titled to their names.

Square prolly allowed this cause the Japanese are massive Frenchboos.

Would of have been better off with Uniqlo or something domestic

My only question is: why are SE targetting a fashion demographic?

The two are entirely unrelated. Do the boardmembers at SE have some kind of relation to the LV administration?

This seems strange.

If people keep pointing to declining sales for the FF13 games, you really need to look at the big picture of the huge decline in console game sales since FF13 came out. There is also a strong pattern of every sequel to JRPGs during that time underselling their originals by quite some margins (i.e. Tales of Xillia II, Bravely Second).

Lol what sort of lightning Stan reduces her to Uniqlo collaborations
They just opened a store here in Chicago and I copped a few good items
Have to weed out through a lot of H&M tier nonsense but the store is pretty banging

I was just suggesting they help promote glorious Nippon products 🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵

The people making fun of 'crazy fashion', I'll give that to, but the Louis Vuitton outfits are part of their spring 2016 ready to wear.

The huge decline like how Witcher 2 sold 940k and Witcher 3 sold 6 million? The huge decline like how Oblivion sold 3.5 million in 5 years while Skyrim sold that in 2 days? The huge decline like how Resident Evil 5 sold 6.9 million and Resident Evil 6 sold 6.3 million?

External factors are not the reason FF13's sales dropped precipitously. In Japan, Xillia 2 snagged 68% of Xillia's sales, while 13-2 did only 48% of of 13's sales, and then LR did 45% of 13-2.

Yeah I'll agre this seems like a weird marketing choice. If it were the FFXV characters modeling clothes then yeah, I could see why they would do that. But I guess we can't let Lightning go, can we Square?
