[Steam Winter Sale 2015] Indie-pendent Hidden Gem Recommendations

Right

And yeah, from the comments I've seen in the Cryptark thread and elsewhere, it's the kind of game that people were expecting Galak-Z to be.

Yeah I really want to try out Cryptark, but was bummed to learn it uses a more normal control layout (ie: hitting left on the stick moves your ship left on the screen, rather than left to your ship's orientation). There was a real feeling of mastery as I got better at Galak-Z and mastering it's ship's controls to circle strafe and kite enemies but the rest of the production just let it down. Give me Cryptark's structure with Galak-Z's flight controls and I'm in so hard.

BTW this thread is amazing, already opened up a ton of tabs of games I've got my eye on to grab before the sale ends. You can get so much gaming with so little money here it's insane.

Cryptark is much more offensive oriented. It's from the devs of Apotheon, and you can seen some of the DNA carried over. You can even have a shield item that blocks and reflect attacks and projectiles. Galak-Z's delicate thrust control wouldn't really feel right in Cryptark IMO. The mastery here is more weapon-focused; finding your favorite synergies and putting together a loadout that fits your playstyle. Cloaking + EMP grenade + ram spike. Quad-wielding heavy machineguns. And so on

Brigador is so alluring and I barely understand why. I'm just waiting to see how its EA period goes before leaping onboard. But, man, that game is love at first sight.
I'm gonna pick up Epiphany, because I really liked every one of the games before it. Widjet Eye did a great job. I definitely echo your sentiment.

I'll finish off that series, then play Life is Strange, then Tales from the Borderlands. This sale = what a ride.

What a time for you to be alive.

I think it's the lighting, plus all the little details in the environments

And even more stellar indies

Cryptark - $8.70 (33% off)

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it as well. From the other thread: "Lots of meaty macro and tactical decisions. FTL and Xcom (planning and missions) slammed into a twin stick shooter where you raid ancient space hulks for tech and profit."

This thread has a serious lack of Distance and Teleglitch

Distance - $9.99 (50% off)
IdenticalFrailDrake.gif

http://store.steampowered.com/app/233610

Distance isn't about realism; it's about barrel-rolling through a gauntlet of lasers. It's gliding between grinders, evading massive saw blades at breakneck speeds. It's weaving through a hailstorm of spikes, and maneuvering along tracks that twist and turn unfettered by gravity and physics.

Teleglitch - $3.24 (75% off)
9Z5yhtz.gif

http://store.steampowered.com/app/234390

Take the lightning fast pace of Hotline Miami, with the dread and challenge of your favorite roguelike, and that's Teleglitch in a gritty sci-fi nutshell. The tension of the unknown, the joy of finding a new gun or a medkit, the fear when you're low on health and ammo, is fantastic.

I'd like to recommend the game Towerclimb, it's just 25% off, but that's around 11 measly Euros for a fantastic game.

It's basically a roguelite, the main focus being platforming and climbing up a tower, it has fantastic music, nice art with some really fantastic animation on some enemies and tight controls.

I'll refer to Santar's OP, it has a nice writeup on the game. Game is completely overlooked too, which is a shame, since it's so amasing

I fully agree, the game gets tons of praise in the Indie threads, but I never heard anyone talk about it outside of it. (Come to the Indie threads people :p)

Not a single mention (seemingly) for Assault Android Cactus, Downwell and Pix the Cat in this thread leaves me sad.

Assault Android Cactus (34% off)
filament.gif

My favourite twin-stick shooter in years because of how expertly crafted it is, regardless of it being WitchBlade's debut title. It may come off of as primarily a co-op experience (local only for what it's worth) but it carries enough meat to its bones to still be a worthwhile single player endeavour, especially when gunning for the S+ ranks per stage. For starters: although it doesn't seem that way on the surface, there is very little randomness that comes into play here, allowing for plenty of room for refinement in one's approach to a level or boss fight. The often dynamic arenas themselves can pose as big of a threat as the robot opposition (something you rarely see in a shooter of this style) with hardly any 'gimmick' recycling to boot, with the enemies simultaneously being sufficiently varied. There's 9 playable androids to choose from, nearly all of them with a noticeably different strategy yet still viable to achieve the highest ratings with. Said characters vary from someone wielding a railgun with proximinity mines on the side, someone who spews lava whilst carrying a giant fuckin' drill, someone who can only damage others through her separate robot (meaning you have to pay attention to three different things simultaneously) or someone with a chargeable vorpal blade allowing for long-distance and highly damaging dashes. The soundtrack is upbeat and compliments the frantic action nicely, there's a lot of effort put into audiovisual readability to prevent a need to constantly glance over to the HUD for crucial information, the bosses are designed around reasonable 'bullet hell' patterns without overstaying their welcome and there exist numerous EX Options (first-person camera, visual filters, upping the enemy count et cetera) for a change of pace. Several other modes too outside of the campaign, such as a Boss Rush, an Infinite Survival and a Daily Challenge.

Or just watch this official trailer. Sure sold me when I first laid eyes on this game.

Downwell (33% off)
WX74zrw.gif

Fast-paced vertical rogue-lite with an ingenious combo system that balances some level of risk-reward to reap its rewards. The idea behind it is simple but with enough nuance in its underlying systems to remain engaging (especially so once you unlock Hard Mode) and its soundtrack is also composed by the same guy who was responsible for Spelunky's, so catchy tunes were all but guaranteed. Certainly one of this year's most underrated gems and besides, it's only 2 bucks right now.

Pix the Cat (75% off)
fixgad.gif

'Pac-Snake on Crack featuring cute little ducklings' ought to be a concise enough description!

Can vouch for Downwell being cool. I also played the free demo of Assault Android Cactus and it was a blast, recommend more people to try it out.

Forgot all about Big Pharma. Decisions, decisions...

Are you still playing it, Toma? Any updated impressions?

It improved a lot since I first played it and they added some more features since then. Still one of the most original and polished games in the genre. Probably Top 10, maybe even Top 5 in my GOTY list.

So when the sale started I tried to find games I was interested in and could barely think of anything... Waited around for this thread, looked through it, and I have 9 games on my cart. Dear god...

Great thread as always! :)

What games? Always cool to hear what titles people are checking out

I had Undertale, Shovel Knight and Grim Fandango on my cart from the start but now I've added Besiege, Hacknet, The Beginner's Guide, Ori and the Blind Forest, Big Pharma, Cities: Skylines and Distance. That actually makes it 10 now... I haven't actually bought anything yet cause I can't afford this much, and I'm trying to decide which games I should get now (and see if there's anything else that catches my eye). Life is tough :<

Oh, and just because I don't think this game has been mentioned enough on this thread, I just want to add my +1 to Renowned Explorers: International Society.
Great roguelike game with an interesting twist to combat (instead of straight up fighting, you can also use friendly or devious abilites that imbue emotions onto your enemies and change the mood of the fight, buffing and debuffing everyone which you can use to your advantage with a rock-paper-scissors style scheme) and a great art style. Would recommend!

Yeah, that's the thing with indie games. There's always more on the horizon (which is both good and bad). At least with AAA games, you have some idea of what to expect, usually months in advance. Indies, there's literally always something new or interesting to find on a daily basis, which is great, but that means it can be pretty overwhelming. 2016 is going to be insane

Passing post to say: I, like many no doubt, lurk more than post on this forum. So I wanted to say thank you for this thread. I try and keep up with the unique games out there but the storefront is a daily whirring battlefront. So having some filtering applied is fantastic. Will add some of the titles listed that stand out to my sale cart tomorrow.

It had been such a long time since I played a twin stick shooter, and when I got Assault Android Cactus, it was so much more than what I was expecting.

Such an amazing game. Anyone even slightly interested in it, give it a try, you will definitely not be disappointed.

A blast to play and I still go back to it every now and then.

My tablet keeps crashing on the first page due to all of the images. Keep trying to load it.

Its far beyond what works on my mobile phone/tablet. Likely need to try on PC.

Yeah Towerclimb is massively underrated. It is a massive game that is still getting added to, and is procedural with enough variety in items and mechanics to keep it extremely interesting and entertaining for a long time, while also needing skill to control. So much to love about that game

RaidersSphere4th - 50%(9,99€)

RS4 to abbreviate, is basically a doujin Ace Combat clone, which does a pretty good job recreating the gameplay of those series, is obviously, not as polished as the best Ace Combat games, but seeing the saga has barely similar games on PC (and everywhere) is a notable option to scratch that itch until the new Ace Combat gets released.

Obviously, due to the nature of the game, graphics aren't exactly hot (and the game is not well optimized) but they are serviciable enough. The plot is more sci-fi than the usual geopolotical conflicts we find on AC, but it keeps you interested enough to follow it.

In definitive a notable game, that manages to bring to PC the usual gameplay of AC with a very good recreation of it's mechanics and mission design.

If you like AC, get it.

I've heard a lot of good things about Flame Over.

Might want to check out the demos of Hyphen and Paper Sorcerer

I liked Hyphen, but some of the others in the Indie threads felt it was just okay

Alright, starting to add some of my GOTY-consideration games:

Breach & Clear - $2,24 (85% off)
zx8EEZe.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/266130/

This is basically a single player focussed Frozen Synapse. Have a team of mercenaries, plan the route for all simultaneously and watch what happens after you hit the execute button. The more realistic theme and less tactical complexity makes it easier approachable and, while still allowing for good tactical fun.

Great value for 2 bucks, but based on the discussion below not included in the list.

Avernum 1 - Escape from the Pit - $1,99 (80% off)
dZ6tMAr.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/208400/

Spiderweb games rank among my favourite RPGs ever. They are deep, have great lore and stories, intriguing mechanics, huge worlds and are generally not something you see very often. These games might look simple, but they are absolutely fan-tas-tic. Avernum 1 is probably the best game to start dipping into these games.

A serious must for any RPG fan and $2 for more than 50 hours of RPG and tactical greatness.

I thought Breach and Clear was kind of a dud. Frozen Synapse's campaign or Doorkickers are similar and superior experiences (and also frequently cheap).

It felt constrained big time by what seemed like a mobile-first design.

Earthtongue - $2,49 (50% off)
pOa%2BpR.gif

http://store.steampowered.com/app/358070/

This is a prime example for the type of games that I started creating the Indie threads on GAF for. There are plenty of games that are bound to never get mass traction and an alien garden simulator playground definitely falls into that. Dabbling in this ecosystem and how dozens of plants or animals react to each other and unlocking more options was one of my personal favourites in 2015.

Its a game you might only spend 2-4 hours with, depending on your playfulness, but I absolutely adore what this game managed to achieve and I'll keep holding these experiences dear to my heart.

Yeah, B&C was fun on mobile, but on PC, it's totally outclassed by Door Kickers, Frozen Synapse, and others

I agree, FS and Doorkickers are better, but Breach & Clear still was fun on a basic level. If I only stick to playing the best game(s), I'd be stuck playing Europa Universalis and Dwarf Fortress for the rest of my life. :p

True though, since FS and Doorkickers are featured, I might as well omit Breach and Clear I guess. The OP has enough games and options anyway.

So Stick of Truth is no longer on sale. I was planning on picking it up tonight but I noticed that the sale price was missing.

Is this normal during this winter sale or is this a glitch and can I expect it to come back on sale soon?
