with the launch of a new system (NX), the consolidation of another one (PS4) and PSVR, which probably is still underestimated here, I don't see how 2016 numbers could be equal or lower than 2015...

PS VR is going to cost the same as a new platform and you can't use it on the train. It's not going to be big(at least for a while). We also have no idea how much of a boost PS4 will have(could be less than 3DS declines) and NX is still a big question mark.

But overall I agree. It should be higher than 2015.

Nintendo should be working hard to get Overwatch for NX, but alas, that's not happening.

It's the only listed title that would have major appeal within Nintendo's typical demographic (it shares a lot with Team Fortress 2, and anecdotally that's been one game that nintendo fans consistently like), and it helps that blizzard is fairly console agnostic.

The issue becomes: who is left to buy it? It may be possible to have a sign of good faith when (if) the game launches on NX with exclusive or early content, but will that be enough? This is said as someone who very much wants this to happen, and it would be a very good inclusion to Nintendo's online ecosystem.

Btw why is everyone so focused on the NX getting PS4/X1 Western ports? I always assumed thanks to Japan we'd be looking at the 3DS support, some Western support, and more importantly mobile developer support. I figured titles like Monster Strike & Puzzles and Dragons were testing out a trend of sorts. Either that or just making it very easy to port mobile titles over or something.

And the chart I posted includes 2005 and 2006 and 2011, sony had 3 systems in 2006 (PS2, PS3 and PSP) and even in 2011 cause PS2 was still alive.

If you remember PSP and PS2 selling very well you remember wrong cause numbers prove that N always sold better than S in every Xmas week, considering the worst year for N is still better than the best year for S, even GBA sold better than PS2 cause winter holidays is a period of time in which the nintendo audience buys more sw than the sony one.

It's not a comparison, though; can Sony sell well during winter holidays? Of course: PSP and PS2, and sometimes PS3 as well, had sold really well in December - they received an hardware boost, both in Week 49 onwards and on Week 1. The fact that Nintendo typically sell better is not relevant here because we were talking about when it should be better to launch FFXV.

Given the type of game, it doesn't matter whether they launch in Summer or in Winter because legs will be terrible and hw boost will be limited in two, at most three weeks.

Also I don't really understand the comparison between August and December - has a Sony platform ever sold better in August than December? I guess not.

I don't see many people focused on that. I assumed when we were talking NX getting ports, it was Japanese PS4 ports.

Major western publishers will keep releasing Skylanders, Just Dance, LEGO, and Disney Infinity on NX, low key, pretending that leading platform sales ain't no thing, indies will love it, and I think that's about all anyone can reasonably expect.

Sometimes it seems that the otaku market is overvalued - they are a valuable segment of the market, because they are loyal, and spend a lot of money, but would they be able to support a platform by themselves?

Whether there's a total of 20 games or 30 games between LEGO, Call of Duty, Skylanders, Disney Infinity, Assassin's Creed, Just Dance, Gameloft, FIFA, and a variety of indie titles is less important in the conceptual range of what I feel a lack of leaks suggests, which is that there hasn't been a paradigm change in the amount of Western third party support they've achieved.

To contrast this with Japan, I think it's entirely possible that every publisher has at least one game on board and we'd get zero leaks out of them because there's no real outlet from which the leaks would flow with an assertion of legitimacy.

Ok then, I think my honest expectation for major Western publishers is slightly bigger than what you mentioned here.
I still think NDAs and bigger control on the message could be playing a role here and giving us a worse picture than what it actually is, but the realistic range is that.

For indie developers, instead, I'm expecting actual good support from the beginning: Wii U had decent offering on day one, and their relationships with indies have only drastically improved as time went by.

True but 3 mln isn't an especially large number. I'm not sure the userbase will their to support big VR exclusives for quite a while either which will naturally soften the adoption rate.

We know nothing about NX yet and western support exists if more than the handful AAA titles from the big publishers.

Getting titles like Minecraft or the Telltale games at launch and not years later like the WiiU woukd already be a big improvement same for having heavenly used engines like Unity and UE4 being supported from Day 1.

If the system isn't too underpowered I think the support will be just fine, if it makes sense. EA might not bring over Battlefield but Fifa or PvZ Garden Warfare if the audience is there.

We're maybe going a bit off-topic but the problem with Wii U multiplats is that they were either lacking content or features or launched later. That instantly put them at a disadvantage. That's not to suggest they would have sold well otherwise but it compounded the problem.

It's Nintendo's job to combat that but I doubt we'll see it happen.

EDIT: It depends what effect DQXI would have anyway. It's also being released on 3DS and NX(and we don't know if that's the UE4 version) so it might have only a small effect on PS4 hardware sales.

"There's a game with a schoolgirl in it" is not a reason why VR would succeed in this country.

Mobile and portable gaming are successful because nobody has any free time, because houses and apartments are very small, and because strict mothers won't let kids sit in front of a TV for hours every night taking over the living room going online with Halo when they should be studying. So playing on the train or alone in their room represents the majority of gaming opportunities here.

If VR has a chance at large scale success in Japan, it's because it's relatively private, so people can do it without disturbing the rest of the house when mom/the wife wants to watch terrible variety shows. But in a country where everyone spends two hours on the train every day and has maybe 2-3 hours of flexible time at home, mobile is still where it's at.

2016 has Persona but 2015 had Metal Gear.

In the end it's all about FF and DQ and if they'll launch next year.

It can be difficult to gauge if you simply measure the weight of one title to the consoles in the week it launches.

A big library, with several appealing games will gravitate people towards a console throughout the year and not necessarily just when the big games release.
