I agree he doesnt have the same dedicated following, but directing and writing a film that looks like it may end up close to a billion dollars domestically gives him a lot more leeway than he ever had before from Star Treks much more modest success

He'll get leeway for a film or two I guess. Directors with true staying power are rare though, regardless of how big the films they are on get. Look at Chris Columbus.

Definitely. He isn't going to get a free ride forever, but he'll get his Inception free-pass film after this.

I wonder if Abrams will be viewed more in the category of Joss Wheedon than Christopher Nolan.
I don't think Abrams is capable of birthing a turd like of AoU. Even his TV shit, Dollhouse is way worse than anything Abrams ever put his name on.

They both have the same origins in TV, though, Abrams has certainly been much more successful with it than Whedon, regardless of the reality distortion field Whedonites are likely to aim at "non-believers."

02 $151.964.038 $166.675.144 $133.300.000

05 $125.103.207 $23.978.417

A good demonstration on why a record breaking start isn't going to be enough to claim #1 Worldwide.

NOTE: For those who don't know, China opened in wkd 1 for Jurassic World and the Saturday of wkd 3 for Avatar. Star Wars launches in China on the Sat of wkd 4.

EDIT: Mojo is wrong. Avatar launched Jan 4th in China, which was the Monday after wkd 3.

love em or hate em, Whedon certainly has a distinctive creative voice that I can't see in any of Abrams films.

JJ will be the ultimate company man. Guy you can call to make something slick, funny, visually attractive with strong performances that goes so fast you don't have time to think about the rickety story structure or do anything too weird or unique to not appeal to the widest demographic possible. And that's totally fine.

Christ.

I love seeing stuff like this. Put things in perspective about how much of a beast Avatar was.

SW isn't out in China yet, is it?

It's a good chart to remember. The fact is that the Worldwide record has never been in play—there just isn't a universe where a film can generate $2 billion overseas with current exchange rates.

Once the film launches in China, we'll have a better sense of whether or not Titanic's second-place position is vulnerable or not. If this performs like a real blockbuster in China? Seems like a foregone conclusion. If it struggles at all? It'll be closer.

Abrams is above Whedon for this alone

A shame America didn't fuck with it. I'm not saying it's because the main characters were black...but it's because the main characters were black.

It's also because the show was boring and procedural as hell. Every week it was the same shit. No tension whatsoever. Didn't feel like it went anywhere except for casting two insanely good looking people.

Lost > Person of Interest > anything whedon has ever put his name on.

it's an unfair comparison though because whedon was actually heavily involved in his tv writing whereas abrams just produces it. gotta say Lost is one of the best pilots ever though.

#teamdarkskin leads aside, the show looked like a low-budget Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Was it really a huge loss?

And no Fringe love in there? Sure, JJ left after the first season and it got into god tier sci fi after that, but he still had a hand in some great stuff with that show.

i never went through with Fringe. I heard good things though.

Fix that. First season had many JJ directed episodes too. The first season is quite good, with a great finale. The first half of season 2 is pretty rough though as they were trying to pull new viewers in. But about halfway through 2, you can tell they just said, "Fuck it. No one new is going to watch, so let's go off the reservation!" Back half of season 2-all of season 3 is some of the best sci-fi on TV ever in my opinion.
And, unlike Lost, they don't drag things on. The show was great at leaving bread crumbs of mysteries, but then answering it a few episodes later. And then you notice another trail of bread crumbs...

You've made a huge mistake.
First season is incredible. Second season starts off even better. A few duds afterwards then the final season gets good again.

"Jacksonville" in season 2 all the way through "Entrada" in season 3 is one of the strongest sustained runs of episodes. "White Tulip" being the best of the series, and "The Plateau" being my personal favorite.

Honestly it was OK watching at the time, but it has little staying power. Can't imagine myself EVER watching it again.

On the other hand I'm currently re-watching all of the X-Files for maybe the 4th time?

So guys. Do you think Avatar 2 has a chance of doing huge numbers? Or do you think the novelty of that sort of film has worn off over the years?

Those Avatar 2 BO numbers are going to draw a lot of salt, lol.

How so. I can't imagine a scenario where it makes less than $2 Billion WW. $500M in the US maybe, and stupid money everywhere else. If Cameron decides to get weird and say fuck it "im going to make whatever the fuck I want and no one can stop me" then numbers for 3 and 4 are up in the air, but by that time it wont matter as part 2 will have paid for the entire trilogy.

You can't even extrapolate any novelty factor as we dont know what the fuck the movies even are. You're forgetting Cameron is the master of sequels.

It's all in how they sell it. The problem is it will have very, very lofty expectations after the performance of the first film.

But, we should never doubt Cameron on a sequel. The two times the man has done it (Piranha 2 doesn't count) he has delivered classics.

Fix your life mistake sir. Some times it struggles but it's a good show. I will say that it's one of those shows you can really only watch once, watching the series a second time is a chore.

Astrid is bae tho.

Nah. Think I liked it more the second time. There is such an undercurrent of sadness to the entire thing that really comes through when watching it again.

Won't make as much as Avatar 1. There were so many elements that had absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the film that played in to it, that there is no way it happens again.

No, but those week to week numbers for Avatar are just ridiculous. It wasn't sprinting, it was running a marathon.

It took Avatar a full 3 weeks to hit $100M USD in China, so those later weekends aren't even particularly skewed (as the first few are with Jurassic World).

I see. Personally I've never seen the movie and honestly never had the interest. Everyone I've talked to said the movie was long and that it was just ok. I remember the big thing about was the 3d and all the CG they had going for it.

IDK. I guess I'm asking will that same novelty pay off a 2nd time. You guys would know more than me.

Right. I can easily predict (and so can everyone) that Abadar Deux will have considerably better action scenes than the comic book mediocrities people like to peddle in this forum.

Shit, Avatar 1's action scenes are still fucking ridiculous.

The movie is way too damn long and the story is barf, but holy shit

Honestly, doesn't matter how technically well directed an action scene is. If you have an army of 7 feet tall smurfs running around throwing grenades, it diminishes a whole lot.
