ah okay. i guess i didnt remember correctly when its existence was revealed. but still after that all they throw at it is a little scrabbled together group of fighters. seemed weird to me at the time. loved the movie anyway of course.

I'm sure there's more resistance out there but basically they became targeted and had to scramble what they had

I was also confused as fuck as to what the relationship was between the Rebellion, the Resistance, the New Republic, the Empire, and the First Order.

The crawl didn't really explain it, and neither did the movie either in action or exposition. I only know what it is now after reading some supplemental material. I don't think it's good for a movie to have to force your viewers into reading supplemental material in order to have them understand the relationship between organizations in the movie.

When I first heard "New Republic", I assumed that the galaxy reverted to a pre-empire state, and the old republic was restored/liberated. I was utterly confused as to why the New Republic and the Resistance were two separate things. It's like that comment on RLM's Star Wars TFA review: "Shouldn't the resistance have been like, the army???"

I sent an email to the theatre chain I went to about the dialogue volume being low in my screening, and they offered to send two complimentary passes and a free popcorn, which is nice and appreciated.

I also bought $7 popcorn and it wasn't very good.

I plan to see Star Wars again sometime, and my sister wants to go. She doesn't like the genre, but her music teacher said they should go, so I may go with them.

Yeah the sound mixing is frankly not great. It wasn't your screening because I had the same problem

That would be pretty god damn difficult. The end of Fellowship is an absolute masterwork

It'd be so damn appropriate though for the whole Finn/Rey dynamic though, whether it turns romantic or not. Like, let's say Rey decides to dissacotiate herself with the Resistance or even Luke to solve this shit on her own, but Finn - the first ever real friend she's ever had (and the other way around) - swears to stick by her the enitre way through wherever she goes

Y'know, I'm gonna stop right there to avoid disappointing myself even further

As far as Han and Leia is concerned, I recently rewatched ANH and Empire, and I forgot how much Han harasses Leia. If Empire released today like that, it wouldn't fly. :/

That's such a depressing thought.

I can picture is now, "HAN SOLO IS SEXIST, WHY EMPIRE IS PROBLEMATIC".

I mean it was. The Republic was the governing body.

I do think they should've put more info in the opening scrawl though. That's all that was needed.
Fellowship is the best LOTR film. Such a good story, beautiful movie and great character development.

I posted on GAF and asked others, but nobody mentioned having the same issue until now.

Weird.....

That's how I think it will go, with Rey going rogue at the end of VIII after killing Kylo or Snoke and going for whoever is left alive between both (or neither dies but one almost does), essentially going on the dark side to some extent, but her relation to Finn saving her instead of dooming her in IX.

this is a better summary of my main gripe with the movie, i guess. i loved it, but after leaving the theater and thinking about it i was like ... wait, where's the republic? where is the army? where are the warships? shouldn't the republic and the resistance vs. the order be the same people? etc. the movie does very little to explain the political situation or what happened in the 30 years between films.

Hey I'm not disagreeing its just the last 20 minutes of Fellowship is utterly beautiful film making and its really hard for me to envision Star Wars as fun as it is being at that level

I can't be friends with anyone who thinks this is the best Star Wars movie.

That said, it's a very enjoyable movie with the super charming BB-8, other likeable characters, and an interesting villain.

WHy not? This movie will be the very first SW movie for a lot of people. Sure it may give them interest in seeing the earlier ones but they could easily see this is their favorite.

That said this is tied with ANH hope for me only with Empire ahead of them both.

Empire is still my favorite. However I am really happy with this movie. I am not even going to rank it until we get the rest of the trilogy. The other 2 will be here before we know it.

I think Empire is probably the better movie but this is the one that connecte with me most. It's those damn new characters. Unbelievable work those actors did.

"designed to block smoke, not toxins"

How is that even a thing, and why even include it if it's not even relevant a minute later.

It's just a minor narrative misdirect for the audience. Particularly those who've managed to be completely spoiler free

I do think they should've put more info in the opening scrawl though. That's all that was needed.

The Resistance was a splinter group that Leia founded because the New Republic went all Neville Chamberlain and didn't want to confront the First Order directly even though the FO didn't even try to hide the fact that they're still trying to do evil shit.

They were secretly supporting the Resistance because reasons, and that's why the Resistance could only field X-wings in their Starkiller assault instead of a full force of capital ships that you'd think the main governing body of the galaxy would have access to.

Other than being a bit of misdirection, it's one of several lines where Finn is telling Rey something that only a stormtrooper would likely know. Before that he tells her to fly low because it confuses the Tie Fighter tracking. Rey gives him a "and you know that how?" kind of look after he tells her about the gas masks. (They have another exchange along the same lines but I forge what it was.) There's an unspoken thread of Rey figuring out he's not Resistance that plays out in those exchanges.

This to. Said it earlier in the thread. The characters really sell this movie for a lot of people. You're instantly drawn to them more so than you were to the original trio. Not to mention Driver does and interesting Villain.

Yep which sets up Han's women always know joke.

Yep. Driver makes Ren flat out more interesting than Vader.

No one knew about the space weapon that's the point. And the reveal of the space weapon was them using it to destroy the entire Senate and a huge chunk of its fleet. The Republic was basically nuclear Pearl Harbored

So the x wing attack on starkiller base is the Doolittle raid. Kind neat detail for the history nerds like me.

Yep and it wasn't all of the Republic either just those smart enough not to grow complacent in a time if "peace"

:)

The WW1 to WW2 analogue is great to understand things here

Yup, that's the payoff. I didn't even pick up on it on my first viewing, but it's definitely there.

I wonder if he knew by then.

Ya know I'm glad they never ran with Finn lied to me about being Resistance so I don't trust him because he was a Stormtrooper bit that many lesser movies would have done for "tension"

I mean that interview with Lucas does kinda make you feel for him. This IS his baby and I appreciate him for this entire series. But it was time to let it go. He even says it. He's 70. I think it takes a lot for someone like him to walk completely away.

The problem with the prequels is he did it alone.

Basically Vince Russo circa WCW

Yeah, it's a huge testament to the character writing. That trope is one of my most hated in in cinema, the artificial wedge between characters leading into the third act. But here they use it in a way that actually develops the characters and doesn't turn it into some grand betrayal. Finn does his confession and Rey blows it off. It's no big deal because she gets it.

Mine too because you know it's gonna be resolved and the longer you drag it out ugh

Also Leia basically acknowledges him for what he is a brave fucking man who rebelled against evil and took a stand. That was such a powerful moment fo me. Ya know my second viewing really made me appreciate what Fisher is doing with Leia here. Probably helps when the real hotness Poe Dameron himself vouches for you. I want a Finn and Poe side movie.

Honestly I think what TFA does really well is avoid a lot of standard narrative tropes that are fucking annoying.

but none of that is explained in the movie, which kind of stinks imo. okay ill stop talking about it.

This isn't made clear at all because it happens so fast, but did they blow Coruscant up? It looked like that was the planet that went kaboom and everyone was saying the Republic was there.

It kinda upsets me when people harp on Fisher's acting. Mind you it's not oscar worth by any means. But it is serviceable and personally I think the scenes with her and Han were great. The clearly still love each other, but that classic banter between the two never stopped.

Yeah, I know. That was one of my main criticisms of an otherwise pretty cool movie.

It was the Hosnian system.

The supplemental material says that the New Republic now changes the location of the capitol based on elections.

Hosnian Prime. Well actually the entire Hosnian system actually

But if the Republic is there....what's going on over on Coruscant? Is this some background reading I should be doing?

Oh. Where's this supplemental material anyways, TFA was like a recent Halo game, they just jump in and stuff starts happening with the assumption you read the books a true fan was supposed to read beforehand.

So nobody else found the dialogue volume/mix low? I had to strain to hear some of Leia's dialogue, and some of the lines later in the movie were a bit tougher to hear.

She plays her as a woman who has seen a lot of shit. A woman for whom the war never really ended.

There's dignified exhaustion throughout her performance.

Really enjoyed it the second tine. Looking forward to more of her in VIII
