Are you serious? That was one of the most important scenes in the movie. it introduced all the barriers that had been constructed around Bolt and showed why he acted the way he did for most of the movie.

Would any of his failures as a hero when he was in the real world meant as much if we didn't know where he came from?

The information could have been delivered in half the time.

maybe its for people who don't watch commercials or trailers :P
y'know, like the parents who take their kids not really knowing anything about the movie besides that it's disney
Yeah I didn't watch Bolt in theatre and only caught the film on DVD. I figured I wanted to watch the latest Disney animation and had completely forgotten about everything in the film except I know it's about a dog. That end of that opening actually came as quite a surprise to me, haha :lol

That scene set up all the super powers, motives and the relationship Bolt has. I feel it's a more important scene that what you are saying.

It was never going to look like a painting. The second pic you quoted is several years old and looks just like "normal 3D". Some people have totally misread Keane's comments.

Wow, Jett is like the soul of me. Well said.

YES, it was never intended to be taken literally. The french painting was a jumping off point. The painted-concept-realized-in-3D was a jumping off point.

I feel the end product nails the mission of this project. Look at her face. She still looks very drawn if you ask me. In fact, when I saw this image this morning, the first thing I thought was "wow, they managed to make this look almost like a 2D classic Disney film except it's 3D." I started googling and researching and BAM, whatdoyahknow, that was Keane's original mission from the start.

And for the bland comments . . .

For one, this is just ONE version of her. We don't know how she's evolve later in the movie when she gets her final dress and all. I'm sure they'll be doing something fantastic with her final hairstyle that will be memorable.

But I disagree overall. Look at her dress. Look at the texture. It's amazing. Looks like satin and it's so detailed. But somehow I'm not getting photo realistic when I look at the whole thing. I think they nailed it.

Also, where did they second swinging image come from? The one with Rapunzel?

EDIT: I found it! Thanks Google. Debuted at SIGGRAPH 2005 I think.

EDIT: I'm kinda wishing Princess and the Frog would have gotten the CG treatment. I mean, I know what New Orleans looks like in 2D. Don Bluth showed us that in "All Dogs Go to Heaven," remember? Would have been great to see all those New Orleans visual accents, densities and details illustrated with CG and cool textures, the way Rapunzel will do with its environment.

Dammit Disney.... you had a chance to go back to your good old 2D but NOOOOOoooOO. Dammit. /kicks a can down the road.

Listen, more 2D is on the way, Lasseter has already told us this. Winnie the Pooh will be 2D with the classic style taken from the original illustrations in the books.

But damn, there's no reason they shouldn't explore what they're capable of with CG, ESPECIALLY if they plan on making the animation look and feel like they're 2D stuff.

I'm getting a dominatrix vibe from that picture. And I like it. The picture, I mean.
There's a lot going on in that picture actually. Definite domi vibe, foot fetishists probably already have their tickets bought, and those into hairy chicks probably passed out already from fapping.

To be fair, the pic in the OP looks a lot more reasonable in terms of the spine angle than the comic reference.

Either you don't really have that many flexible friends, or you need to watch more porn! ;)

This looks somewhat promising, though I don't see why they can't just hand animate it. I'm really not into that Pixar look, in fact I pretty much hate it. This combined style could yield pleasant results (I like this promo picture), but we will see.

I have flexible friends (one was even a gymnast) and I watch porn. So show me a pic of a real person, who isn't a contortionist by trade, in the same pose.

bonus points if the pic includes a girl getting plugged from behind while flipping around to suck the guy's balls... that's for educational purposes, to, er, learn the limits

When it comes to princes you're most certainly right.

As Executive Producer now, Keane is very much involved in making sure the end product reflects the hand drawn style he originally wanted.

Check it out this write-up from August 11, 2009 . . .

After his appearance at that Walt Stanchfield panel, Glen returned to the Sorcerer Mickey building in Burbank where he’s now reportedly helping the “Rapunzel” production team tackle the trickiest aspect of this project, which is how to bring a hand-drawn sensiblity to this film’s CG characters.

You see, WDAS’s ultimate goal here is – when “Rapunzel” is complete – that this CG production will have the look & feel of those contemporary hand-drawn Disney fairy tales that came before it. Films like “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.”

And Keane’s reportedly right in the middle of this part of the production making sure that “Rapunzel” ‘s characters have the right sort of stylization.

Clearly the folks at WDAS must be doing something right. Earlier this summer, select attendees at the Licensing International Expo were shown the opening of “Rapunzel” plus multiple hair tests for the film’s title character (Which – given that, at one point in this animated feature, Rapunzel has hair that’s over 70 feet long – were said to be very impressive). And these folks came away just raving about this upcoming WDAS production, anxious to cut deals with Disney Consumer Products so that their company could then make doll versions of the next Disney Princess that every little girl is going to want to own.

IF YOUR AWESOME :lol

yeah not a bad movie, If you don't start thinking of Pixar. I enjoyed it but Bolt the dog is stupid. Mittens ruled the whole show

This is still my favorite concept image. Does anyone have the full version? I'd kill for it.
1qo8sh.png

When I saw this, I got a huge Rosalina vibe. So much better than the first rendered version of her.

This is the first Disney animated film I have been hyped about for since Fantasia 2000. I hope it delivers.

Concept Art / actual movie images look really good. Hopefully it all turns out to be a nice package.

So much nostalgia from that princesses / princes picture

Uh, if you say so, champ.
Bolt was an amazing movie. Really, really good. I would have loved American Dog to be in its original form, but they did a great job with it.

I'm excited that Zach Levi's going to be the main guy -- that's awesome!

Is this the first CGI musical?

Technically, the first Shrek film had a few musical numbers in it. Nothing along the lines of classic Disney films obviously, but they were there.

Not to burst the bubble, but most of the groundbreaking stuff they were attempting towards the start, like making it feel like a painting or getting it to feel more hand drawn was abandoned. It's a very traditional CG feature right now, and isn't exactly looking great from what people around the picture are saying. It's been going through revisions like crazy, and Glen Keane even took an absence from the film at one point - when he stepped down as director.

That said, Disney isn't happy about how Princess and The Frog is performing I can't imagine, so they'll probably be interested in how this performs in determining their future. It's a good time for them to get something out there garnering interest for this movie.

That really sucks to hear. I recall you(?) else being excited about this in a thread ages ago. It really doesn't look much different than standard CG movies.

Hope Disney gets done with their Princess phase soon so they can get back to the concept style animations of Atlantis and Treasure Planet.

Are there ANY other rumors going around about their future projects other then this and that fucking Pooh movie?

Any word on new 2D films other then Pooh? Any word on future 3D titles other then . . . this?

Cause if not then I will not be looking forward to anything from them for some time.

Why does he remind me so much of Guybrush Threepwood?

Good memories.

The first 7 or 8 in the second row showshow memorable Disney's princesses were in the 90s (Mulan probably being my not so common favourite). I have yet to see Princess and the Frog but Tiana seems like a good one as well. :)

Loving the look their going for on this, getting a bit bored of the standard "Generic kids CGI " look, Rapunzel looks kind of hot and a big fan of Levi after Chuck so hope this does well.

I still have high hopes for this movie. If it actually looks like that promo picture, I think they have some of that 2D look there, more specifically, the look of those detailed, gradient shaded promo posters Disney makes for their movies - like this:

qq62qd.jpg

I always hoped someone would make a 2D animation that would look like that. It would take tons of time per frame to draw, but I thought maybe for a short movie it would be possible, or using some 2D software that would know how to help animate details and gradients from one keyframe to another.

Also, I know it's a very old clip, but I'm not as happy with how that clip from Rapunzel looks like. Her face and eyes look more like a doll, toy, than a stylized live person.
