Dusk's write-up of Zero was excellent. It is definitely an underrated game, though the removal of Crimson Heads and less variety in enemies was a complete travesty.

I hope to see the day where Crimsons return to the franchise, one of my favourite game mechanics ever.
Thank you, and I will say Crimson Heads are missed. The weird thing is they could work with Zero's gameplay, you back-track enough at least, but alas.

The enemies don't actually have less variety mechanically, but do thematically. Zero's enemies are weird, and that's hard to talk about without spoilers.

For some spoiler talk, no story spoilers for Zero, just enemy/boss talk;
One thing about Zero is that they have a lot of zombie models because of an early concept they had where zombies would be given more personality and quirks in Zero, which was scrapped, but there's a high number of different zombie models as a result.

But so many goddamn animals. The worst part is concept art showed they originally had some VERY interesting monster ideas, but they cut it down since this was a prequel. Some of the monsters conceptually are fine, but the execution is off the mark a bit.

Example; The ticks/fleas. It's interesting how they make a distinct hissing/rattling sound when you can't see them, and when you get near fall down from the ceiling and can pounce on you, but they look weirdly kind of cute and not threatning, to me at least.

I think the spiders in Zero are weird. They are sooooooo slow to spiders in the other games. They go nowhere fast, yet they spew acid and poison a lot more than most other entires as well. I think I get poisoned more in Zero than any other RE by spiders despite there being so few. Actually, a weird point on Zero is how a few enemies are really underused. You only fight something like 3-5 spiders and dogs in the whole game, and a few other enemies like that too.

I hate Exterminators, the monkey enemies. They are dull design wise, they are not scary, and for some reason they pack a punch while also being smaller and faster thus harder to shoot. I just do not like them.

What I do like are the Lurkers, which are maybe one of the weirdest RE monsters in the whole series simply because of how normal it is. While the series has Hunters and variations of Hunters, here we have the Lurker, which is just a normal-ass giant frog. And how it just leaps out of nowhere in areas with water, stares at you, and either hops away again or does that one-hit kill tongue attack. It's so weird, and for some reason in all three playthroughs I've done of Zero, I can never get this bugger to appear in the same places. I've encountered it in different rooms in different playthroughs. I don't know if by luck or its randomized or something.

There's other enemies though, like the crows, Hunters as I mentioned... But the bosses are like this too. The scorpion is kind of cool, though its attack patterns I find really easy and can easily stun-lock the boss. The centipede could of been such a cool fight, but the thing they went with I just find silly. Grabs Rebecca and runs around uselessly. It's like a less impressive version of the snake fights from RE1, but sillier and less deadly. I actually like the bat boss fairly so, cool arena and interesting horde mechanic, plus I think the only flying boss in all the RE games (outside of the bat-bug from RE5, but that wasn't consistant). Proto-Tyrant is kind of weird... but I actually like the Queen Leech final boss and its phases well enough. The first phase is tense, second is a bit panicky, and the third phase is cool (though the leeches being weak to light... doesn't make a lot of sense?).

The leechmen are weird, I don't and yet do find them scary. How they appear and some of the scenes they appear in are actually frightening, but they look kind of silly and I feel they could of been made a lot creepier if they were animated and attacked differently, as they kind of flail around like an inflatable tube man. But they are a threat, so I end up still being a bit afraid of them, and the way they appear can be startling/creepy.

I think Zero is also missing some memorable villain or stalker enemy. The enemy selection is honestly Zero's weakest area by far, to me even more than the item system. The enemies aren't terrible, but just aren't as interesting or creepy as other entries, and this applies to the narrative too. No interesting stalkers, no cool bad guys. The main villain is unfortunately uninteresting outside of when you find out he isn't really himself and then the actual real identity is such an out-there twist. Villain also lacks presence in the story.

But for all that being said, Zero I do look forward to playing again. It really does have some great puzzles, great art direction and visuals with a variety of locales, some good mood-piece musical themes, and likable protagonist and some good scenes throughout the game.

I'm hoping this re-release raises the general opinion of Zero. Some people treat the game like it's just bad, even observed in the recent Code Veronica topic posted today on GAF, which is certainly not true. Maybe replaying it in the modern era and more people playing it for the first time will switch the tone some on the game.

I think I am doing good on this sale. It's the last day and I still haven't bought a game. I only got gifted Watch Dogs.
But I probably will buy something before the sale ends. Going to buy Clickteam Fusion

So I've never really been into/played Telltale-style point/click story games.I bought The Wolf Among us during the summer sale for some reason and I have yet to play it ( I think it's because it seems to be very crime noir and I absolutely hate that genre of film).

So what have I bought so far during the winter sale?Tonight I purchased, Tales of Borderlands (despite never playing a Borderland game) and I've played two hours of it already. Has it changed my life? No, but I've found it humorous and enjoyable.

I still don't even know if I love this genre of games and here I am reading the positive steam reviews of, Life is Strange and I am close to pulling the trigger on it as well. I love good stories that feed the secret emotional lesbian inside of me (I am manly man on the outside!). Should I do it, GAF?

I just realized that RE0 releases exactly a year from when REmaster did.

Maybe CVX will come next January.

Oh, hey! You're right. I knew REmake HD Remaster released last January too, but it is the same exact day a year later, January 19th.

Code Veronica has to happen eventually. Once Zero HD and REmake 2 are both out, all that's left of the main RE series on PC is Code Veronica and RE3. I almost want to believe maybe why they haven't done Code Veronica yet is because they want to do some better remaster of the game with some new content or something. Since Code Veronica is full 3D and they've already ported it ot MT Framework, maybe they want to do an enhanced port for it?

And I also suspect they will do Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles sometime. Those were also published to MT Framework and released on the PS3. I think Capcom plans to do it eventually; I've noted this before, but when RE4 came out on Steam, on the Trading Cards, the RE characters who appeared in other games were given a '(RE4)' bracket to affirm it was their RE4 version. Characters like Saddler and Ashley didn't get this, but Krauser did, and the only other game he's in happens to be Darkside Chronicles.

If you haven't heard the Darkside Chronicles soundtrack, I highly recommend it. Ine of the best soundtracks in the series.

I feel porting Code Veronica/Chronicles had been delayed to focus on other RE projects first, though. Do you see how many RE projects they've had in the woodwork?

Buy the first episode for $1 here and try it for yourself, upgrade before the sale ends or wait:

Edit: and no clue Dusk, but I assume between remakes, ports, and trying to get 7 going it's quite a lot to manage!

One thing I can mention is in almost every episodic game I've played, it gets better as it goes along. This is definitely true of Tales of Borderlands, Life is Strange, and Resident Evil Revelations 2, for three random but related examples.

Not that the first episodes are bad, but you kniw, alower set-up and finding themselves at the beginning.

Big fan of the STALKER series, almost universally recommended. Seems like you're a shooter fan as well. It has lite RPG elements, so think of it like Fallout but more focus on combat mechanics.

I'll look into it for sure. The price for the full bundle isn't very cheap but not expensive either. Something I want to try for sure.

Kyle Katarn is still like the best Jedi I know of.
Kyle Katarn is still canon in my heart.

I can agree with the first two, but is RER2 good, or RE6's kind of "good"?

Revelations 2 and REmake HD came out last year. In the next year, we are confirmed to get Zero HD, Umbrella Corps, a third CG Resident Evil film, and the last live-action RE fiom. We know Resident Evio 7, REmake 2, and a VR Resident Evil game are in the works, and around the time the last CG RE film releases we'll hear new on the announced RE TV series that may or may not be connected to the films.

This is along with whatever else not announced we know, but it's busy work.

Is it wrong that I want to buy that new Carmaggedon game? Is it worth it after those huge December updates? I want to really take advantage of this sale but I just feel like I haven't paid enough attention to good games really that are discounted heavily.

Kind of in the same boat as HP_Wuvcraft. I'm looking to clean out a bit more of my wishlist. I have a bit of a priority in my head on the games in my wishlist but are there any particulars someone wants to suggest strongly that I should grab?

http://steamcommunity.com/id/Wibblewozzer/wishlist#

I'm sort of leaning towards Endless Legend, Grim Dawn, and/or Darkest Dungeon. Anyone actually try out Black Closet? Its discount is pretty small which is the main thing holding me back. I'm open towards some arguments towards other stuff, though.

At most I'm looking to spend $100 more but I'm not looking for someone to put together a full shopping list. Just some directional push with suggestions.

Edit: And I finally played my copy of Abyss Odyssey and I think it's well worth the $3 it goes for on sale. I love ACE Team. I think reviews are a bit overly harsh.

had only 3.83 CDN in steam credit on my account but i wanted to pick something up during the sale.

just bought:

evil genius for 2.74

and the lost chronicles of zerzura for 1.09. and they both came exactly to 3.83.

guess i'm done for the steam sale! lol

While I'm in the audience that liked RE6 as a dumb co-op action game with a mixed-quality campaign and good fighting mechanics, Revelations 2 is not good in a RE6 sense and won a lot of people over in the OT when its episodes were coming out. I am a weird one that likes older and newer RE for different reasons, but can easily differenate on why I love both.

It is low-budget, but actually is kind of slow-paced and atmospheric, has some incrediably tense encounters and maybe some of the most tense boss encounters in the whole series, has a story that is actually fun and enjoyable instead of dull and unmemorable with uninteresting characterization l (which RE6 and Revelations 1 had in my opinion in a lot of ways), plus playing in the hardest difficulty from the start at least, I was aching for ammo types, herbs, and had to play strategically, which worked with the slowet pace of the game. Plus the later episodes had some light but fun puzzles, the last episode had a wonderful callback scene that lasts 30-40 minutes, the true ending was fantastic and cheesy in the best possible way, and there was some cool scenes and hooks, like this part in episode 1 in some creepy woods, and things you did in Claire's scenario woukd affect Barry's scenario, and so on.

I actually just installed it yesterday to see what the improvments were like.

It took about 5 minutes to load the level, then the frame rate would jump between 15-60 fps constantly.

Absolute garbage still.

No idea what they thought they fixed with the patch...

My haul was nice and tiny compared to the previous years:

Ryse
The Evil Within
Age of Wonder
Castle Crashers
Dragon's Dogma (with 25% off GMG coupon)

then gifted a buddy Deus EX HR and Psychonauts.

Hella fucking hyped to replay Dogma, will be the first time I preload and play a game on literal release. Also Psychonauts is only $1, so everyone owes themselves to check the game out.

Dragon's Dogma
Wolfenstein TNO
Dawn of War II
Crysis 2
Max Payne 3
South Park
Pillars of Eternity
Cities Skyline
Ethan Carter
Darkest Dungeon

Idk if that equates to $100 more or less, but thats what I would choose. You'd have good variety of games to play if you feel fatigued with a genre, and some of them look damn good graphically.

Absolutely grab Wolfenstein TNO and you should buy Dragons Dogma.

I'm on team #buykiseki so I'll say Trails SC

Any idea yet on how Dragon's Dogma will run on PC? I added it to the wishlist to remind myself to check in on it but I'm a bit cautious buying it early without knowing how it'll perform. I guess Capcom games tend to run decently?

Wolfenstein has constantly been on the verge of entering my cart. I've had it for awhile on Xbox One and I'm about 1/3 through it but I loved what I played and I'm sure it'd look better on my PC. If only the Steam price was as low as it was on sale on PS4 recently. But your suggestion might push me over the edge for both the main game and expansion.

I haven't even started my copy of FC. Since SC has such a small discount I figure it's probably more of a Summer sale pick up? Or I'd even buy it at full price later after going through the first game if I really liked it and wanted more.

To name a few off your wishlist (on mobile right now, so excuse some brief descriptions/typos...);

Reading your wishlist backwards;

Dropsey: If want a point'n'click, this is an insanely good one, and it's $4.99 right now. Charming, funny, creepy, psychadellic, and exeresses emotion and story with no dialogue surprisingly well.

eden*: I have not played and picked it up myself, but friends and Steam goers claim it's among one of the best VNs they've played and a real emotional ride.

NaisancceE: If you want an atmospheric dive into a surreal world, I highly recommend this. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, but it expands into a surprisingly varied abstract world with some exploration, massive alien landscapes, mind-bending elements and sections, and can raise emotions through gameplay, along with a fascinating world to explore. There's a few platforming sequences that are less stellar than the rest of it, but impressed me, but takes a little bit to get going (second chapter is when it starts picking up).

There's a lot of close ones I coukd suggest, but I'll recommend these three for now.

If you have good internet, I suggest you don't pre-load. Unpacking files I find takes forever, longer than if I had downloaded it when it released. Good for those with slow connections, however.

Edit: Oh, grrr, double post. Wasn't intentional.

whoa final boss in eternity is kicking my ass also

the difficulty ramp up in this game is really weird, i've never before had so much trouble with a single enemy

derExperte was. :(

Well shit. We need more no-nonsense straight talking posters, not less. Hopefully it's not a perma.

tbf it's not that hard to avoid getting banned
*has directly called people out on nonsense many times and has never come close to a ban*

How would you know how close you may or may not have come to a ban :P

Someone hasn't played Game of Thrones yet. It doesn't get better as it goes along. To be fair, it doesn't get worse either. It's consistently shit from start to finish.

I ended up buying a dozen or so games after being paid. First time I'm fully appreciating the currency switch. It's amazing how far $50 can go in my store now :P

I have not, and there's a few examples. But in most episodic games, and certainly the praised ones, I think most wouldn't disagree to say the first episode is usually the introduction and it gets better from there.

Any opinions on Elite Dangerous? Can't decide if I want it or not, but the price seems like a great deal. Is the game actually good these days?

Word is that Dogma on a 750ti runs the game maxed out on 1080p with no drops at all, its an MT Framework game so the performance will be good for sure

Im so glad I double-dipped with Wolfenstein. I finally got around to checking out the Wyatt storyline and J's inclusion in the game is so rad. Never thought I'd see good ole BJ dropping acid.

Yeah I had to put on God Mode for that one. As my party stood, there was no way I could beat him otherwise or I would just be hitting my head against a wall until I somehow took him down. Great game otherwise

Thanks. Now I am tempted to grab Dragon's Dogma since I've never played the previous versions but it almost goes against the Steam sale spirit to buy something full price. I'll probably hold tight until Summer.

Added NaisancceE and eden. I have too many unplayed point-and-click games already so I'll hold back on Dropsy.

About three or four weeks back I finally made an "Unplayed" category and have been working on trying every single game I haven't played yet. It's down to around 130 games (not counting whatever I buy tonight) but I bet around 15-20 of those unplayed games are all point-and-click (or Telltale style) adventure games.
