Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

I can't believe the Wii U's graphics are this bad @ Sonic: Lost World.

Seriously? The game looks great in my opinion.

For a 60FPS title I think it has some clean visuals, WiiU version doesn't hold a candle to the PC version due to the latter having the ability run on a higher res and forcing HBAO on it, but I think it still looks really colorful and pretty.

In either case, glad to see DSS back for more Sonic. Loved his Sonic Colors run a few years back and this is especially funny to watch for me given I recently picked up Lost World on PC and it can be pretty unforgiving, so someone rushing through it like that is pretty awesome to watch.

Yeah I know, I don't trust the way graphics appear on a stream (in case my wifi is just sucking etc) so I wasn't necessarily judging the quality of the graphics :P is the game actually any fun?

It's a very divisive game, but last I checked, the consensus is pretty much that it's not very good. I liked it myself, but something everyone can agree on is that the boss fights are absolutely atrocious. Seriously, the worst boss fights in any game I've ever played.

Is it just me or have donations slowed to a crawl today?

Anyway, Lost World seems enjoyable to watch and the runner does good commentary.

The moveset takes a while to get used to but I'm having fun playing through it. Level design can wary in terms of quality and difficulty, and the writing is, well... let's not talk about that. Just ignore the story. But yeah as far as the gameplay is concerned, it's not boost saga good (Unleashed, Generations, Colors), but it's still a lot of fun.

Biggest issue for me is that the wisp power ups have an information pop up that halts the game you always gotta click through because you can't disable hints.

Yeah this guy's commentary is perfect. It's hard to believe he's playing while constantly describing everything you are seeing. The commentary and gameplay have been completely separated into different parts of his brain apparently. All lizard brain, muscle memory stuff for gameplay and the rest of his brain devoted to communication.

ugh

This game looks like it's trying to be sonic galaxy but it feels like it's missing some stuff

Honestly what I'm seeing most in it are Sonic X-Treme influences, but yeah I think the dev team stated somewhere Mario Galaxy was one of their inspirations.

In either case, Silent Forest Act 1 coming up. One of my favorite levels, music and visuals wise.

Not sure if they charge entry if you are in the area and want to stop by (they probably do), but you don't have to be a streamer/speedrunner to attend AGDQ.

They do charge entry, but they were only taking pre-registrations this year. There is no at-the-door registration. You'll just be turned away if you try to come in.

This guy is a boss with the donations. Yeah we probably have time for... 2 donations and then they end RIGHT when they should lol

Just watched the Aladdin run since I missed it before. It is indeed awesome, one of the funniest runs so far

Oh and the NES block starting with Turtles is going to be awesome. Batman race with Dexter!

Watching this game get run makes me wonder WTF they were thinking with Boom. Lost World seems like it was a solid base to build a really good Sonic game on top of, but they just tossed the whole thing out and started over.

I feel like I watched a video about that very sort of thing (Sonic being started from scratch with every iteration).

As for the run itself, really solid. DarkSpinesSonic is one hell of a multitasker and gives great commentary.

Boom was farmed out to a different developer.

I honestly wish Lost World's gameplay wouldn't have been criticized as much as it did, Sonic Team was completely in the right of wanting to try something new, even if the Boost Saga games already worked for them, and for the most part they didn't do a bad job as overall it turned out to be a solid game. I always feel like better level design and some minor tweaks to it could have made for a very solid game.

It's why I am looking forward for the Sonic Lost World modding scene on PC get to the point of level mods. Would be really interesting to explore some fan made levels with the moveset Sonic has in this game.

Also, fantastic run. Pretty surprised to see the Eggman Final Boss being so alike to Sonic Colors' final fight tho, down to the fireworks end animation.

IIRC, Boom was made by a completely different team so the Lost World team have been working on a new game for two years at this point, so perhaps we will have a Lost World 2 of sorts.

Jim Sterling did a Jimquisition on Sonic a while back in which he discussed that topic, so that may be what you're referring to - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY2HF4Lf9kI

So, what are the best speed runs shown thus far?

the Super Mario Kart race was really good. Race outcome spoiler:
ended in an almost-tie. So good.
Ori and the Blind Forest race was pretty good. The dude commentating most of it was really good, I thought.
Kingdom Hearts was cringe-fest but a highlight for the terrible singing
Battle Block Theater was good because PJ breaks everything and Stamper called in like last year.

Yeah I recall it was farmed out to Big Red Button (reveal trailer didn't look half bad), but it was still a crazy decision to start basically from scratch. A Lost World 2 with a refined engine and some lessons-learned applied could have been quite good, or at least a lot better than Boom ended up being.

The run was certainly not a cringe fest, and most of the singing was pretty decent. It was a really enjoyable run and the runner pulled off a lot of clutch tricks.

I really liked the recreations of classic enemy designs in Lost World, even taking some stuff from Adventure 2 and Heroes. Game looks average at best but I hope they'll reuse some of those enemy designs in the future.

Really really really don't want to miss the Mario Block in several hours time. It's as if Super Mario Maker caused a major resurgence of Mario speedrunners to come together.

I see blechy on the couch with a headset. Guaranteed entertaining run.

Indeed. Anytime he's on the couch is guaranteed to be enjoyable.
