Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Holy shit.

This plus the cost of a GPU that can handle VR is about $1000. That's way outside mass market pricing. Nobody in the real world pays that much for any consumer electronics, short of 60" TVs and Apple laptops. If that's what good VR costs, we're at least a generation out from VR achieving success.

Nope. Not biting at this price. Hope Vive and/or PSVR will but priced a bit lower. I will still get a set though, even if this turns out to be the price for all of them.

699€ plus shipping is tough. But the not working payment kept me from placing an order for now. I mean it's just a preorder. You could chancel it anytime.

But 699€ seems a lot especially if the touch controller will add more to it. By the way it stated *expected shipping march 2016.

yeah but sony said PSVR was going to be priced like a console. people are still making fun of $599 a decade later - no way they cross that line again. People even scoffed at the $499 Xbone. so, i'm thinking it's going to be priced around where the PS4 is now.

the headset and an external box screams expensive along with a bundled game. I am expecting $400 - $500.

People think PSVR will be much less expensive? The fuck? Sony's not taking a loss on a super niche piece of hardware lol.

I think people are confusing their hopes that it will be cheaper and are ignoring the reality of the market. Super niche first generation hardware is never priced cheaply. They aren't going to eat a loss on this product from the get-go.

As exciting as it sounds, I am not going to pay the early adopter tax this time.

In a few years I bet we will be able to buy a 3rd generation VR headset for half the price. We'll see lots of people agonizing about whether to upgrade their OG Rift.

Lol nope.

599 for what exactly? What are we gonna do with this thing when it comes out? Are there launch titles? Or are we still playing roller coaster demos?

Ill wait it out for the others, try em all at PAX and get the best/cheapest one.

But damn.. 599.. lol

An article on HDTV in 1998.

AFTER more than a decade of research and political debate, most of the world's consumer-electronics manufacturers have announced their plans and prices for the new high-definition television sets that go on sale in September. And talk about sticker shock: the least expensive ones will cost $8,000.

Doomed.

DVD players were $1000 when they launched.

It's what you pay for adopting a new tech early.

This won't be the one the mass market will embrace. No one is expecting that.

I somehow wish I had bought a DK2, it now seems like a decent compromise as an entry level product (although I guess it won't be supported in future software)

You know what, this isn't only a problem for consumers, but also for developers, who may have bet on developing a VR title 18 months ago thinking the consumer version would have a similar price to their last device, the DK2. But with this price, the userbase will be much smaller, which is a problem for their future revenue.

Considering I wouldn't be getting mine until after Match if I ordered now I might as well wait and see what Vive is doing. The price is fine for a premium experience but it does change my plans of buying both this year to only buying one so I want to be careful.

At $500, this would've been a "prestige product" no-brainer for me.
At $600, it gives me some pause to think about it a bit more.

Sony proved the mass market won't buy game machines for $600, so Oculus better have a lot of non-gaming stuff ready to wow people.

2 friends finally got through at work.

The first has an estimated ship date of March.
The second went through 5 minutes later and has a ship date of April.

Its $599 WITHOUT tax. So at 15% (Not an expert on US Tax) that's $689 + shipping.
In UK its £499 including VAT.

Conversion rate is £479 so not as ripped off by conversion rates as usual but still £150 too much for me to justify.

Damnit - I was in the store within 1 minute after launch (took me that many tries to get the page to show something). But it kept saying there were errors with my credit card, when there weren't any (I could go to my credit card account and see the $1 charges by Oculus). Eventually it finally went through, but by that point my shipment had slipped a month to April :(

For people that haver placed an order. Is there a way to check expected shipping date? I could only see it before placing it and after finishing the order, no where on order history or in the confirmation email.

People keep saying No or goodbye VR. Do you not remember the first smartphone Iphone was like over a grand at ATT and Blu Ray was over a grand....600 is expected I was more expecting 500 NOT 400 but its around my range so im fine. Plus this is the first HIGH end VR system. People will buy this

No people won't buy this. Most people don't even have a system capable of running this. It does not compare in any way to an iphone which while it costs $1k it runs self sufficient, also it is a PHONE which is something everyone needs and uses. VR is hardly something people can live without.

I make over 6 figures and buy most every electronic that comes out and even I went "lol nope" at that price because there is nothing that justifies it, if you think some average joe is going to drop that kinda money on it I have a bridge to sell you. :)

Reminds me of when Sega launched the Saturn for $500, then Sony came in and ate their lunch a few hours later with the Playstation at a lower price.
