Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

That's it. It's all over. The first iteration of VR is moderately expensive. It's doomed.

These type of comments are laughable, people can't be this short sighted can they?

Well Oculus fucked up.

I've tried over 20 times for this damn website to take any of my CCs and it keeps erroring out.

Your loss OR. Looks like I'll just wait now to see what Vive is doing next month.

My situation also. I DID try, Oculus, but you don't want my money. "Something went wrong". Yep, something went wrong indeed: I tried to spend 700€ in a moment of hype fueled weakness. It's gone now.

Better deal than PlayStation VR honestly; think about it (it is guaranteed to work for your computer and the one you build 5 years from now).

Still, it will take time for these things to go down, a long time. First they need to get rid of the screen door effect to make them truly viable for all.

IIRC Oculus said something about yearly iterations. I doubt you will find much use for a CV1 in five years from now, maybe not even three years from now. Devs will have to either develop with all iterations in mind or they will choose the high or the low end as their standard. Either way it doesn't look too good. Buying a $599 CV1 when CV2 probably supports foveated rendering is rather pointless. And that's not even considering the competition. It's best to take a wait and see approach, wait vor VR standards and market leaders to emerge.

Don't be mean, you guys are in this together, you should work together for the VR future.

Still funny thou.

I think people are confusing their hopes that it will be cheaper and are ignoring the reality of the market. Super niche first generation hardware is never priced cheaply. They aren't going to eat a loss on this product from the get-go.

People are rationally expecting sony to not repeat history. Sony has been shown recently to make almost immediate adjustment given market expectation. They did it when Microsoft revealed the cost of the xbox one.

I mean maybe you are right. Maybe people are being overly optimistic but all that means is that Sony screwed if they release it at a cost more than $400.00

599€ is too much for me. I will wait for the second generation of devices for maybe 199-299€. I wouldn't pay more for a peripheral device. I also need to a lot of good games/apps for it or I won't consoder it at all.

Most likely 740€ because "taxes" according to Luckey
lucky bullshiter who talked about 300-400$ last year

Great, price will keep the product out of the mainstream for a year top, enough time to finally achive latest hardware upgrades, and as everyone knows, materials tend to get cheaper at china factories in the mean time.

2016: enthusiasts getting the thing, developers beta testing in a wider scale than dk2
2017: cv2, foveing built in, cheaper materials, better software, educated userbase

VR is a slow growing beast, this price helps to a better growing.

Would be in if I had the money, which I don't. 699€ + shipping + a gtx 970 for 325€. Even if I had a full time job I would hesitate.

The expected ship date now says April, heh. They've already sold through their stock for March! The Oculus is actually a hit! RAISE THE PRICE

funny, didnt Yoshida say something that PS VR would be 'console priced', or something to that length? If that means that it will be 300/350 euros.. for 699 euro's Sony could throw in the PS4 as well.

Well that blew my 399 out the water, out of my price range I'm afraid.

Sony,HtC the floor is yours, make your moves.Although I believe the Vive will be pricey to.

This headset will also be obsolete garbage 5 years from now.
Perhaps, but that is the nice thing about universal peripherals. I can still use a garbage from 2001 1024x7something led tft monitor with the latest gaming rig.

Like, all these VR devices have clear pros and cons, and price and limitations have to be decided by consumers priority-wise.

It ain't gonna be easy for anyone in the market early on, that's for sure.

Will wait for Vive, not because I expect it to be cheaper but if I'm going to pay over $700, I want the best possible version.

Sony displays have always been massively overpriced. Especially those kinds of niche products. They've figured out people will pay for the name.

The video game market is completely different, as they painfully learned with PS3. I expect PS VR to be $400 or less.

I assume those niche products have a significant margin built in, but even assuming it's 50-60% you're still left with a BOM around $500-600, no? Anyway, I think the 400 number could work, but as the lower range.

This isn't the case with Canada unless they are including the sales tax in shipping.

$599 US comes out to around $843 Canadian.

I am concerned about getting hit with additional taxes when it arrives at the door.
They aren't though right before you place the order it says $849.00 *does not include tax or shipping*

Got my preorder in after timer. Pretty smooth through PayPal, although I remember the page just saying shipping Q2 2016. Now to see what Valve has in store, my preferred one. After this price, I'll wait a bit before PSVR. Can't spend 1k+ on headsets alone so quickly.

In Texas the total comes out to ~$680

They better have some must have titles ready for launch at this price. They at least need to get Elite Dangerous on board with official support for the 1.0 SDK. Those two pack in titles don't exactly scream "must have" to me.
