Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Welp. Shipping in April! Nice bait and switch, Oculus.

This isn't the case with Canada unless they are including the sales tax in shipping.

$599 US comes out to around $843 Canadian.

I am concerned about getting hit with additional taxes when it arrives at the door.

You almost definitely will get hit with other taxes and duty costs upon arrival. My DK2 had another $150 or something upon arrival.

Just a note for people saying they will buy a GPU now and the Rift when the price drops:
WAIT FOR PASCAL.

Next gen GPUs are a few months away, buying now would be folly.

You think they will be that much lower? They can't shave off $300 from the price. Maybe only $100 due to the lower specs.

Well, Sony are open to selling at a loss, so who knows what they're planning. If they go $300 then they've probably killed the Rift stone dead besides a very niche audience. If they go $400 I think they'll be laughing all the way to the bank. If they go $500 that will seem fairly comparable to the pricing of the Rift, given that I'm assuming the Rift has quite a bit more going on in terms of tech.

I think anything under $400 though and Sony have got this in the bag. The only problem comes in when people need the PS Move wands and the PS4 Eye camera, which again bumps the price up by a notable degree.

Hahahahahaha.

No way this is getting off the ground with this price.
Needs more time on the oven, when they can put out a nice device for under $400 we can talk.

except orders are already posting later ship dates, which highly suggests they've already run through the initial stock they had ready to ship in March.

Reminds me of when Sega launched the Saturn for $500, then Sony came in and ate their lunch a few hours later with the Playstation at $400.

except gaming was already a thing, VR is brand new... for devs to make stuff for it, you need an audience/you need to make money. A percentage of people won't buy it because VR makes them sick, and out of the remaining percentage of people, only a small percentage will actually be willing to buy a $600 headset. Horrible pricing.

I don't think it's that expensive...

But then again I saw no problem with 599 PS3 at launch and if it was up to me the Bone and PS4 would be around that price with better components so I guess I'm the exception...

nah i'm with you dude. i really think smartphones (with their subsidized costs) have seriously messed up people's perception of value.

(btw, guess how much the original iphone cost? that's right: $599. and that's not even including the cost of the mandatory 2 year contract)

i mean, i get it, i can't afford one right now either. not all of us get to be early adopters. but it's especially important that VR get the user experience right out of the gate, because it's working to overcome a pretty bleak history. $599 for a solid experience is better than $299 for junk that's DOA. as with most gen 1 tech the user base is going to be smaller due to cost. but the hope is that those users fall in love with the device and proselytize it to everyone else for gen 2/3, when costs fall to levels appropriate for mass adoption. this is a normal, predictable arc.

you're all going to get your solid $199 VR experience but it's just not going to happen in 2016.

14 $1 authorizations before it went through. Pretty excited for April

I have dozens of authorizations that popped on my Apple Pay notification before my card finally went through. Showed March 2016 delivery when it did though, so I guess it kept my place in line despite all the checkout issues.

He'll be paying significantly more, he forgot about the customs duty he'll be hit with for buying electronics from abroad. (About another £95 / $138US for a $599 Computer Peripheral shipped from the US)

Really? So around $900 then. That is crazy.

Will wait for Vive, not because I expect it to be cheaper but if I'm going to pay over $700, I want the best possible version.

This is honestly the main reason I would cancel my preorder. If I'm going all in, I might as well go ALL IN and get whatever is "best".

People think PSVR will be much less expensive? The fuck? Sony's not taking a loss on a super niche piece of hardware lol.

It will absolutely be less expensive. The only question is by how much.

Sony is using more off-the-shelf parts; Oculus opted for custom materials.
Sony already has supply chains in place for many of the parts that they are likely to use in the PS VR. For example, the screens are likely what they use for their phones, etc. They also have manufacturing down.

The only X factor for Sony is that it does require a separate processing unit, and that will raise costs. So, I could see anywhere from $400 (long shot) to 500 (more likely).

At $500, this would've been a "prestige product" no-brainer for me.

If I sell two bottle taped together likes glasses, sell them for 200€, does that makes them a prestige product? Secondly, if they are then a prestige product, is the price justified?

Just to clarify, just because something is priced at $500, it doesn't mean it's worth that price. Calling it a prestige product sounds like terminology, the purpose of which is to justify a price.

Price is nuts. This is going to sell poorly as hell. The high price JUST for the headset along with the high system requirements makes it a very limited market. I wonder how much the controllers will cost now...

No people won't buy this. Most people don't even have a system capable of running this. It does not compare in any way to an iphone which while it costs $1k it runs self sufficient, also it is a PHONE which is something everyone needs and uses. VR is hardly something people can live without.

I make over 6 figures and buy most every electronic that comes out and even I went "lol nope" at that price because there is nothing that justifies it, if you think some average joe is going to drop that kinda money on it I have a bridge to sell you. :)

No, lol not everyone was thinking they needed a smartphone at the time the first Iphone came out everyone had a lanline or a cheap phone that they were fine with. Its gonna be the same way here. Technology is expensive at first thats just how it is.
Have you ever tried the Oculus? me and my gf are getting ONE and splitting it so 300 each is not bad at all for us to share it and have fun. We really liked it when trying it at PAX

I'd probably buy it if I had a PC capable of running it ):

OR basically costs $600 + $600 upgrade for me. If PSVR has the software and comes in under $600 I'd be down for that.

An article on HDTV in 1998.

Doomed.

DVD players were $1000 when they launched.

It's what you pay for adopting a new tech early.

This won't be the one the mass market will embrace. No one is expecting that.

The difference is the fact that VR is going to live and die by its software, and software developers aren't going to support a peripheral out of the bottom of their heart. There's going to have to be a viable install base to make it worth their while. A closer comparison would be 3D within the home market.

Gonna enjoy the meltdown when people realize PSVR is going to cost just as much. Guess what people? Nice things cost money, I don't know what people were expecting.

This meltdown right now is funny to me. I'll enjoy that meltdown as well. I can tell there are many young ones on the board who had a lot of hopes and dreams...seeing it being shattered to the realities of the world...priceless. :)

Vive isn't going to be any cheaper (they said they expect to be a little more expensive I believe, actually) and PSVR will be $100 off at best, as it's shipping with the head gear and the PU - and Sony isn't going to sell it at a loss.
