Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Looks amateurish at best. But hey, those guys are behind Mighty No.9 so it might end up looking like some kind of HD N64 title or something.

Oh damn, I didn't know this before. But I would have backed it anyway. I need a new IGAvania in my life, even if it doesn't look that great.

Eh yeah they need to make that tattoo more glass looking, but the design isn't too bothersome really heh. I got reminded of this women from Order of Ecclesia with all this talk:

Sure quite packing it too.
Wish that was how the in-game character models actually looked, damned handhelds keeping the bar low
and the team behind the game

Honestly, this isn't quite what I expected:

I sure hope they improve the lighting and shaders a lot until release. This has a bit of a dollhouse feel - Not quite what I expected a next-gen Symphony of the Night to look like.

Keep in mind this screenshot is one of their older shaders from November, before they received feedback, worked on them, and gave us the preview today of their new shader on Miriam.

Ban this sick filth!

In all seriousness, that screenshot looks fine, but people like to overreact. Graphics aren't everything. They should have opted for hand painted sprites and backdrops though.

A lot of people were hoping for that, me included, but I also know the difference in cost between going with that compared to this way. Still going to give it time to see what they can do.

I see nothing wrong with the boobs. Goes with the style.

And to be honest, when you look at how far the camera is zoomed out in the gameplay shots I wouldn't be surprised if they made them big so that people would see that she has boobs at all.

They still have enough time to polish and improve the lighting, etc., which shouldn't be too difficult. My worry is that they'll pull off another Might No. 9, where they develop for the lowest common denominator and don't push visuals at all in order to make it easily portable to everything.

That screenshot lacked a ton of detail, needs much better lighting and it doesn't give me a lot of confidence that the end result will look dramatically better since the direction is kind of given there.

If I would make this game, I'd try to make it look like what I expect a Next-Gen Symphony of the Night to look like - And our Ori tech would help making this thing shine. Anyway, I just want a new HD Symphony of the Night and this doesn't quite have the looks just yet.

Always liked that Metroid Painting Orioto made:

I'd probably try to go for something more like that, more gritty and probably 2d, instead of 3d. With the amount of money they made from the Kickstarter, that should be possible if the devs know what they're doing.

Shader itself looks like an improvement. I want to see the backgrounds and what not but things are certainly moving in the right direction :)

Of course they would ruin having a badass female character by having her entire tit hanging out.

These aren't mutually exclusive for what its worth

I'd say the concept art in general was pretty inconsistent. Some she almost looked flat, others she was pretty stacked. One example of the latter being that PS4 art.

Yeah I feel people are being a bit frustratingly selective with the art they choose to reference. Also not a big non-fan of the mentality of "Bigger than a B cup?! How gross and inappropriate!" I know it comes from a good place but I feel is way too reductive and limiting. I have no control over how people feel but it bums me out (is that the right word?) how it dominates conversations.

Some women have large breasts. Some women have small breasts. This character falls into one of these categories.

This is how I feel though again I understand the root of the mentality.

They still haven't even locked down the shaders yet. That's why they put out that early screenshot to ask for feedback.

they sure do

God I love Xena/Lucy Lawless <3

Yeah I backed it up, physical version and all, even if I knew it would probably look bad anyways. Iga made me do it.
All of that because my favorite game still hasn't changed since 1997.

Damn I feel old.

That's not really how this works though. You usually spend quite some time at the beginning of development on just a small area and try to make that the reference for the look you're going for. I'm of a pessimistic nature and would say that the end-result will probably not look DRAMATICALLY DIFFERENT than that screenshot, since they probably want to have an easy time porting. We saw this already on other games like Mighty No 9... And I really hope I'm wrong.

I'm with you. Too many times I've seen the "It's just the beginning" argument for unpromising elements of games for those same (or similar) results to fall out of the machine.

(Then the argument becomes "Patches are a thing!"). Of course, as a backer, I hope I'm wrong as well.

True, it's important to show that this character does have boobs. How else will we know that she's a female woman person?

I feel like the colours, lighting and tones they use in that development vid were fine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU-NF6SJxps
It's a little hard to tell of course but it didn't look bad, definitely not as ugly as MN9 lol.
Looking back at this vid, it reassures me that they know what they're doing.

Also guys the model is going to be so small relative to the window i wouldn't be surprised if it was exaggerated on purpose.
(Xrd also does this, characters have like enlarged animu eyes in a fight but will go back to normal during cut-ins and such)
That skirt is pretty short though... but I still prefer her design to something like Charlotte.

What is wrong with showing some skin? Honest question. It's not nearly as bad as you are making it out to be. Are you actually personally offended by this? If so what standards are game characters in a cartoonish fantasy vampire setting supposed to adhere to? She is a magical vampire killer/monster hunter. Do we really need to be puritan about her attire?

Whoa, that's like, all of the checkboxes here. GG

I feel like the complaints about texture detail are kind of naff. This is a SotN game so you'll be seeing her from a great distance. I feel like the things they're doing with the shader will make her look good from the gameplay camera view. Even just like....view the image by itself and then zoom out so it shrinks to like 25% in browser. It's not a fighting game or RPG so it'll probably look fine even in it's current state. Really hoping we get an ingame mockup with the new shader sooner rather than later. I feel like the colors are really going to pop at the small size.

I don't see why some people here are offended by breast size.

I don't mind breast size, as I said before, it's the outfit that's a bit ridiculous as it is in-game right now. She should be showing some nipple by now. Pull it up a bit.

That said, the in-game shot of her in 2D perspective doesn't seem excessive at all compared to that, so it might have been just so you could see the tattoo during gampelay. We'll see, I guess.

Nice tip. Can't wait to downsample the hell out of this game, it should look pretty stellar :P

One of the reasons I went with the Steam version. Please don't fuck this up with no support for custom resolutions, Inti!

I really dislike the outfit from an anatomical perspective and would definitely prefer for the bust size to be smaller and have the glass appear higher up on her torso rather than play the game knowing Miriam only has 1 nipple.

The only problem I have with Miriam's boobage is that, yeah, that's getting to a point where the nipple should be making its appearance. Pull your damn top back up a little girl!

And that new shader is definitely making me feel better again after the previous two graphical examples.

The chairs look too flat for the image and it's a weird perspective. The lighting feels off in places and like another poster said, makes it look really dollhouse like. That being said, the background sky behind the window looks really nice.

There's lots I hope they improve. This is not super impressive visually. It's kinda dull and boring. Relying on shaders for visual interest is kind of .. bad.

I simply can't wait for this game. I am so excited. I'm okay with the exaggerated features, I just hope they put in lots of light sources to make everything look more detailed than it currently does. I get that doll house comment. That's okay with me as long as they make it well lit and give it high FPS.

Well like, I mean that even at 1080p the character will never be visible at the size we're seeing the test render at, outside of cutscenes and possibly super moves. It probably looks great at scale.

That's.... not what I meant by that comment. Like, at all. As I understand it that tattoo on/above her boob's supposed to be important if I recall correctly, so it'd make sense they would want it to be visible even with the camera pulled out.

EDIT: Just re-read my original comment and I see the mistake, I put boob rather than tattoo. My bad.

For me the character looks fine (needs some aliasing). It's the background for me that's still a bit iffy, feels a bit devoid of life

I really want to see it in motion so bad though. Hopefully it'll animate well enough. I don't expect anything mindblowing, but at least something that doesn't make me sad that it's not nearly as good as Symphony of the Night.

Yeah yeah yeah, I get you. It was a bit of an off topic comment that came to my head just because of the downsampling effect you get from zooming out in the browser.

I definitely agree with this. It's really disappointing. I feel a whole lot of my excitement being sucked away for this game. I really hope it shapes up but I abhor the way MN9 turned out and now I feel like this is on the same road.

edit: Maybe I'm overreacting a bit. I'm just really worried the bg's are not going to get better.
