Here's the rest of the supposed evidence taken from that thread:

Okay, he actually sent it to me and... it's an email alright. But I don't believe this proves anything.

/u/TeddyWolf, open the email you got from Laidlaw, click this button and choose "Show original". Then paste the entire contents of the email including the headers in plaintext here: http://pastebin.com/
Done: http://pastebin.com/4HNGTaEj

Also someone else has asked Laidlaw if it was true and he responded saying yes: http://imgur.com/7cysESd

I know it's hard to believe stuff on the internet, but I hope this finally proves it.

If anyone needed more proof that VALVe are done with games and Half Life especially there you have it.

Hooray... Half-Life fixed.

trust me i want half life more than most. I've played richochet unlike 99% of people who make joke i've played codename gordon opposing force anything involve valve i have touched. We just have to wait, it sucks but people just have to accept it

Though a bizarre way of announcing it, when Kelly Bailey (first) left Valve it was pretty unceremonious. I think we only found out much later through an off-hand comment. Valve isn't the type who puts up a farewell blog posts and notifies fans about these things.

"waah they're not making what I want so I'll dismiss what they're making"
I mean they have clearly shifted from creating single player games to games of a different genre which support a different development model. I don't think it's unreasonable to dislike what they're doing now.

It doesnt even appear to be an announcement. Someone sent him an email asking about HL3 and hes like "i cant answer because i dont work there any more.. im retired."

Valve made one of the best (actually the best) game of all time in Dota 2 and people are still saying they don't make games. If they never made another L4D, Portal or HL I wouldn't be too bothered.

It's not unreasonable to dislike the games they make but to outright say they don't make games is ridiculous. Both Dota 2 and CS:GO are fantastic and better than most games that come out today.

Dota 2 was a side project. So was CS:GO.

What difference does that make?

Just a perspective on what the other Valve writers are seemingly working on

Chet Faliszek is doing PR for the Vive
Jay Pinkerton is doing comics
Erik Wolpaw is doing comics and soon Psychonauts 2
Ted Kosmatka left for Bungie
Steve Jaros was doing Dota the last time he talked about work

of course there's unannounced stuff, which might not see the light of day at all... but the point is they haven't exactly knocked it out of the park in these last years

That sounds really bad.

So much wasted talent at Valve...

The fact that Laidlaw didn't get to write another story in the HL series after Ep2 is a crime in itself.

I find it hard to believe there is "unannounced stuff".

Unless you mean new costumes for Dota2.

This is the first time I've legitimately felt like I probably won't ever see a HL3.

If I was a multi-millionaire I'd love to contract some neuro-biologists to figure out people's compulsion to think Half Life 3 was or is happening.

It transcends simple psychology and I'm baffled.

Wolpaw himself said he worked on unannounced stuff. But that could be just thrown out prototypes to tech demos. Until they aren't announced we won't know...it's meaningless till then.
