The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Damn, I suck at reading.

lol

I've only gotten that combo to work if I'm at the tail end of his c.mk. Too close and they've already recovered from the animation of being hit with the fireball on FADC.

Pretty sure that is the only way you can hit it. I'm an Eroo main but I never use it.

Here's a very brief rundown of the important aspects of frame data. Please note that you DO NOT need to know this but it can help with certain situations and knowing which moves are punishable. If you don't understand this then don't worry about it, I have friends who consistently finish Top 3 in local tournaments with no frame data knowledge whatsoever.

Street Fighter runs at 60 frames per second so when I say something takes 1 frame to perform, then it means it takes 1/60 of a second, more or less.

Let’s look at Evil Ryu’s cr.mp. When you attack with this move it is +5 on hit and +2 on block. What this means is that if an opponent blocks it then you are at an advantage of 2 frames. So if you throw out a 3 frame normal then this would create a frame trap because the opponent would need a 1 frame normal to match it, which doesn’t exist. So if they press basically any button then they will get hit. It can however be beaten by certain supers and invincible moves but those are hella risky.

The on hit part is also really important. E. Ryu’s cr.mp is +5 on hit which means that any move that starts up in 5 frames or less is comboable after the cr.mp, range allowing. This means that he can do a st.mp afterwards because it has 5 frames of startup and is therefore a 1 frame link.

On the opposite end of the spectrum. Evil Ryu’s cl.hp is -7 frames on block. This means that any move that comes out in 7 frames or less will be able to punish it because Evil Ryu has to wait 7 frames before he can even press another button or block.

Worth noting that some moves can be safer depending on the distance they are used at. For instance, if I’m not mistaken Vega’s slide is unsafe on block but if he spaces it correctly then it only hits for some of the active frames making it more difficult/impossible to punish. But that stuff is a bit more high-level so I wouldn’t worry too much right now.

Like I say, I'm not amazing or anything but I'm trying to help out the community with what knowledge I do have. If I'm a little off on the numbers then please let me know. I just hope I can help someone improve their game and have a bit more fun.

Want to put this on a new page in case anyone wants to read it.

I misread, but yeah, still positive it's not 1 frame.

Although, I don't think I've ever seen anybody do EX Fireball FADC ultra with Ryu. E. Ryu, but not regular. I think I've only seen it done with EX in a corner.

My advice would be the same. practice comboing the fireball into fadc so you get a feel for the cancel, and then when you can do that consistently, add on the ultra.

I would say that's not a combo you should be trying to do in a match. It's a pretty large waste of meter and would probably be really space dependent if you're doing it midscreen (if it connects at all, which I'm not sure).
I've seen Daigo and Valle do ex fireball FADC ultra 1 with Regular Ryu. But I don't think it's commonly used.

It's funny because Beyonce's also part white. :P

Since it's sega I was not shocked. You saw that they did with Shadow. Black hedgehog, has a gun his home girl Rogue a white bat... Maybe I am looking into it too far, but him having a gun killed me.

combos:
http://virtuafighter.com/combos/list?ver=5fsa&chara=wolf

my suggestion: make sure youre comfortable with the absolute basics:
P,K string (used to punish unsafe moves)
2P (used at frame disadvantage to beat high attacks)
6P (used at frame advantage to keep your opponent from hitting buttons like 2P)
throw (used at frame advantage to hurt people who dont hit buttons very badly)

then look at the combo starters on that page and see where they fit in. lemme know if you have any questions at all as i've been maining this game for 4 years.

Rollerblades tho
Skateboard would have been cooler

Dead or Alive has a character roster and movelist as big if not bigger than Tekken's. If someone can reach a competitive edge understanding while processing all the frame data in that game, it's really not all that much different with Tekken.

It all depends on how far you want to take it & how much work you want to put in. The same thing applies to any other fighting game.

I am now 1-50 against Millia :D

sloppiest match ever lmao

Why'd you back away during danger time D: Were you trying to bait a burst or something? You backed off at that ass so fast. lol

https://youtu.be/v3dXYiE9K8E?t=30s
At the end of the round here the Millia backed off and tried to bait your DP since you have food/meter to attempt to make it safe if she blocks it. It was a pretty bad knockdown too since you were lower than her when she ended the combo.
One thing you could have done here was wake up Ride the Lightning to get out as it's pretty hard to punish and would have gotten rid of the disc. Or even jump/poke out if you read that she was going to bait a DP and not meaty you.
Also consider dead angle/alpha counter when you block the disc there.

That pressure at 1:04, do that more. Except learn a better combo to confirm off of there. lol

https://youtu.be/v3dXYiE9K8E?t=1m17s
You have to look out for bad knockdowns like this, this was a good opportunity to backdash out.

1:53, so the Millia is neutral jumping there maybe waiting for you to make a move so she can IAD in. You tried to 6P at her double jump there which was good. You can also try using Bull Bash which covers a big chunk of the screen, but it's a commitment.

I feel like you're whiffing a lot of normals at neutral, is that a habit from SF? lol
I wish I could help you more from the Sin perspective, but i'm only really a millia specialist.

Also use your backdash more.

Learn some of these combos: https://youtu.be/2gXNHEMcKtA so you can get some good damage without spending food.

Thanks for the help!

Yea I need to learn the properties of danger time, I thought it was too risky and ended up just backing off :p

I also don't really know the properties of backdashing in this game all too well. I know it's kinda invincible but not really?

Yea that's definitely a SF habit of whiffing a lot of normals lol, I'm buffering most of them into an Elk/Beak if they hit. Is that a bad or good idea?

And I've seen the video of the RTL combos but I'm having issues hitting the 2P afterwards :/, the timing is weird + I don't know how it changes with the weight classes/female characters.

No offense Shin, but I haven't seen any actual effort from you trying to improve your SF play. It feels half hearted and it's like you're just going through the motions and posting videos and you going "lol i suck" but when people give advice you aren't putting that advice to actual practice. It makes me feel like we and our advice is being ignored and it makes me ask myself,"why bother?"

No, you can even be faster by doing holding back, forward, back + punch. The buffer allows you to do this.

This doesn't work.

How am I supposed to play footsies with a character that teleports through normals? I know Slayer isn't the best character in the game, but why can he just teleport through normals then throw me for trying? What am I supposed to do against a character that spends half his time not actually on the screen?

Ideally there should be a way for you to see his teleports and react accordingly. You just must need to know where he will attacks you. Have not played Slayer in a long while but I do know some teleports in other games are unsafe therefore punishable. :)

Not sure if you guys saw this yet but a dude I play with made a great video on whiff punishing by using blocked normals for spacing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5nOwdhUtKk

ffs the drivel in the comments

Definitely useful though. I just don't see the point of him bashing other videos on the topic in the beginning, this is just a matter of situations being different (whiff punishing in neutral vs whiff punishing attempts to challenge pressure). Both are important.

Hey, I'm new to this thread (subbing btw) and this seems like the place to ask questions regarding fighting games and how to get better in general. My game of choice is usually 3d fighters A.k.a. my avatar sake, but I'm currently trying to get better at MKX and spacing/footsies in particular is foreign to me on a 2d plane. Any tips for a 2d noobie on how to improve on that? I have more specifically concerns involving the game, but for now I'll settle for the basics. Thanks.

which aspects do you need help in?

In MKX movement is strong and normals have such good reach playing reactionary, defensive footsies is difficult. It's more about preemptively getting your stuff out there to blow them up for going in before you see anything, like throwing out a long range normal if you anticipate them running in. I can help if you're more specific.

Don't eat any pile bunker or mappa hunch counter hits for big damage.

http://youtu.be/MMKPnw1ttso?t=00h06m12s Also it's not like there isn't any recovery after dash, or dandy step. Enough time to get beat out of a start up.

I dunno, can't you catch his dashes with slide or bull bash? Both cover a pretty good distance and Slayer doesn't have anything that goes over lows except for 6K or Helter Skelter out of dandy step.

By canceling his dashes into jumps, he can end the dash early and perform a special move. If he cancels his backdash, he still retains up to 6 frames of invulnerability! This technique is called Backdash Canceling (BDC). BDC allows Slayer to always block after jumping or catch the enemy with an invincible counterhit.

Well I guess that back dashing thing might be a thing. Oh hey Bloodsucking Universe, the command throw, has like 7 frames start up. That's almost twice as long as Sol's.

ok here is an actual sin vs slayer match I guess http://youtu.be/yVxf_1E4x2M?t=00h22m33s

Edit: Also I thought footsies was about punishing whiffed attacks, not dashes.

Well tonight went rough. Played 10 matches with some random Gouken online and went 5-5 though it should have been 8-2. I made so many stupid mistakes like hitting the panic button for NO REASON e.g. having a considerable life lead and getting freaked out when he jumped in and I ultra'd for no reason. Then played a Balrog and made more stupid mistakes like throwing fireballs at close range once again while having a life lead. Many points were lost and many salty tears were shed. I don't think I've ever been this pissed playing this game before lol. I need to stop getting anxious whenever I'm about to close a game out. Oh well, lessons learned.

Tonight I went from 600 PP to 149 PP.. That may seem like nothing but I spent months building that up. I'm beyond frustrated and angry right now.

On the last fight, I didn't even bother. When I dropped my Kikosho punish, something I had dropped all night, and is easy as fuck, and something I can't do tonight apparently, I just put the controller down and didn't both pressing another button the rest of the round.

I started playing at 6 pm and I only one won fight.

I know I have a long way to go, but tonight it felt like I haven't improved a bit. It was extremely deflating, mentally, to lose to people I think I'm better than. It made me not even want to bother.

After some 3s decided to play some USF4 it's been awhile but had two matches with a Chun li player. It was fun despite being hit with some obvious stuff.

Match One:
Pretty smooth no hiccups .
https://youtu.be/BcrgQDfDFEY

Match Two:
The chun player made the adjustment to U1 however he never baited a fireball from me, but I was already conscious of his game plan it was obvious.

https://youtu.be/UME02M4YWJQ

For people trying to learn street fighter do not jump so much and don't be afraid to press forward and get hit.

I feel you. I went from around 780 to around 390 tonight. My goal has been to reach 1000 before V hits but I always tend to choke around the 800 mark. I'm back to 559 right now but I think I'm going to break now before I break my stick lol.

Thank you Noctis Oji. Need to level up my shoto game so I can at least compete with you in V :P

I'm not sure if I have it in me to play the rest of the weekend, but right now I'm burning with salt and I want to win. I need to dedicate more time to training. Fuck Dhalsim, I need to study that match up.

I've only touched the game once in the past 2 months for this reason. And that was to play a fellow GAF'er who I think has been active in this very thread. Otherwise I've been avoiding playing this game because my salt levels go through the roof when things don't go my way. I love the game but it's just not healthy for me.

Put that salt into training.

I've noticed that every time I hit a road block like this, I come out a better player and for some reason I've leveled up in the process.

I can help you out with that match-up next time you're around on Steam, even if it's only theorycrafting due to the shoddy nature of IV's netcode. It's a rather annoying match-up for Dhalsim.

I probably have around 2-3,000 hours of training mode alone lol. I've been playing the game actively since 2009. I'm nothing great, but I normally have around 2500-3k PP so I guess I can be considered a intermediate player.

I've just had far too many moments where I've lost my cool playing this game(and scared my wife a few too many times) so I decided to take a break from playing randoms because that's mostly where the salt comes from. Don't mind playing friends or fellow GAF'ers though if anybody wanted matches. I'll probably have one last hurrah before SFV comes out and still try to play it occasionally after that. But the days of going 2-3 hours 3-5 times a week is probably over for good.

Last night I had something like that in DOA where I had lost my rank to a gimmick and a overly lame person playing annoying but I perservered popped out Hitomi to punish the lame and I recked the lame player, then I have 3 very hard matches and regained my rank after winning 2 of those hard matches. :)
