The idea that police would cover shit up because they don't want to help a political party. Holy shit. Sweden needs to unfuck itself pronto. If the "xenophobic" party would benefit from news then so it is. Maybe the other parties need to do a better job.

He said it appeared that some people "appear just to have been waiting for the events of Cologne".
Mrs Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said "nothing excuses" retaliatory assaults on immigrants.

I have never heard of this on this scale. Sure, you have had groups of people bothering others and screwing around with fireworks - both locals and immigrants -, but nothing in the numbers we see now.

I find it hard to believe that it was somehow organized. I wonder how regular this is in Arabic countries themselves at large events.

Yeah, I feel the same way. No way this was organized, but maybe also not seen on this scale in Arabic countries because women aren't out unaccompanied as much.

STOCKHOLM — Swedish police faced allegations of a cover-up Monday for failing to inform the public of widespread sexual assaults against teenage girls at a music festival last summer.
Police hadn't mentioned the August incidents at the "We are Sthlm" festival until newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported on them this weekend following a string of sexual assaults and robberies on New Year's Eve in Cologne, Germany.
Stockholm police spokesman Varg Gyllander confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday there was "a large number" of sexual assaults during the five-day festival and that scores of suspects were detained.
He said police should have reported on the incidents at the time "given the nature of the crime." He denied suggestions in the newspaper report that police kept quiet because the suspects were foreigners.
"We probably should have communicated this," Gyllander told the AP. "But we wouldn't have discussed ethnicity at all."
Police in Germany have been criticized for not immediately reporting the incidents in Cologne, where authorities and witnesses later described the attackers as predominantly Arab and North African men.
Gyllander couldn't confirm the ethnicity of the alleged attackers in Stockholm but said "this involves young men who are not from Sweden."

Roger Ticoalu, who heads the city government's events department, told the AP that a "large part" of those detained were from Afghanistan, many carrying temporary ID-cards issued to asylum-seekers.

He said about 20 teenage girls filed complaints of sexual assault and that about 200 suspects were detained and ejected from the festival for sexual assault and other offenses. It wasn't immediately clear whether any of them were arrested and charged.
Ticoalu said organizers received reports already in 2014 of groups of young men and boys groping girls in a systematic manner. Efforts were put in place, including more security guards, to prevent a repeat in 2015 but instead the problem got worse, he said.
"We've always had individual cases" of sexual assault, he said. "But here we have a larger group doing it almost in an organized way. It's a completely new level of obscenity."
"You have a large group of boys surrounding the girls," he said. "They pretend to dance. They come closer and closer. Then they start touching their breasts and genitals. In some cases in combination with theft."
Ticoalu said organizers had discussed the problem on Swedish Radio before last year's festival but didn't alert the public to the incidents taking place once the festival got underway.
"Of course you can say we should have," he said. "But during this period we had 170,000 visitors in five days. So the situation wasn't judged as something where the public needed to be informed."

Dagens Nyheter cited police officials saying Swedish police are reluctant to speak publicly about crimes linked to migrants for fear of playing into the hands of the far-right Sweden Democrats, an anti-immigration party whose support has surged to about 20 percent in opinion polls.
Politicians of all stripes said it was unacceptable for police to withhold information due to political concerns.
"Police should fight crime and prosecute the perpetrators," Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told Swedish news agency TT. "There should be no reason whatsoever to try to hide anything."

I hope every assaulted person goes to the police in every single city where something happened like this. Then the police and media need to report all of these cases, even the ones that happened before and were handled discreetly to avoid strengthening the far right.
This must blow up to really show that Europe is not ok with such behavior at all.
Not nearly all will be caught and they might wait months till their (mild) sentences etc. This has no big effect on the criminals nor their social circle. However, an outcry from the whole society should have a much more potent, immediate learning effect. The message must be clear that if you endorse such attacks, boy, did you just move to the wrong country.

According to police they fled the scene when they saw the cops coming. Also no girls would file a police report.

There is a serious shortage of police in this country. Politicians say "There has never been more police officers!", but the problem is most of them are behind desks. Not out patrolling.

The city closest to me has about 30-35k inhabitants, there are generally only 2 police vehicles out on patrol at any given time, and they are covering huge areas.
 
Similar story in Finland

A big group of men are out there walking around in a group and groping women. I believe it's a new phenomenon. We're talking about a group of 30-50 people. It's going to take 50 policemen to remove that kind of a group from the scene when there's intoxication and communication (language) problems, Aapo told STT.

This is reallly making me rethink my stances on immigration and the refugees. Not that these men are representative in any way of the broader group, but I just assumed integration wouldn't come with these types of issues, understanding that they are still a tiiiny minority.

And seen from the foreigners perspective? How about this: the only way to see this is as sexual assault and the scum doing it should be locked up. This is not up to discussion. I feel like I've entered some bizarro world when reading stuff like that.

- Hamburg
- Bielefeld

That is Germany, Sweden and Finland dealing with this. If that is not enough to present a clear problem, I don't know what will be.

It's not something you even think about if we're talking day-to-day. I don't live in Malmö, I live in Gothenburg, but I guess we have lots of immigrants too. The city feels the same way it did when I moved here 8 years ago. So if the narrative is that we're scared of even going outside or that we walk the streets constantly looking over our shoulder then yes, it's obviously overblown.

Yeah, it's clearly something that needs to be looked into. I admit it came out of left field for me too - and it's infuriating that the reason for that is apparently that the police decided to keep it from the public, no matter what their intentions. I understand why they did it; it's because the backlash against innocent immigrants would have been (and is now) severe. But now we have that and a backlash at the cover-up so it didn't exactly work.

But it still needed to be known so something could be done about it, even if there's no way to avoid a lot of people concluding that "arabs + rape = close all borders, throw them out". Now they've prevented more levelheaded people from actually doing something about the rapes.

I think the reason why they were saying that, that some women have bought into that far right extreme racism and may actually be baiting arab looking men in order to report them to police. I'd have thought that too a few years back, but at the moment I don't know. Normal people don't do stuff like that, but neither do they throw molotov coctails into refugee centres.

And good to hear that I'm far left for trying to explain the background of what has been happening here. People are genuine afraid to move outside after dark because of these made up stories of rapes.
