Hip-hop and r&b is what I and everyone I knew listened to growing up. Of course, I listen to damn near everything these days (though still mostly hip-hop), except country and metal.

what was the cool kid music order of operations for you people growing up?

I was a huge weezer nerd (thanks windows 95) then melodic punk like bad religion, nofx, pennywise, lagwagon etc then I had a brief ska phase and then I wussed out and started listening to shoegaze

I'm all over the place now and I like it.

Ramones & Slade when a young child thanks to those being the two tapes we had in the car
First band I got into properly was Feeder at around 10/11, who have remained my favourite band
From there started getting into mid-00s "indie" like The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand and that
Then got into The Clash due to an indie radio station playing Death Or Glory, which pushed me into 70s punk towards the end of secondary school unlike anyone else
Then at uni got into modern punk via The Ergs, Dillinger Four, Latterman and The Lawrence Arms.

That's my basic musical history, skipping random things like liking rhythm & blues and soul because of The Blues Brothers

While everyone in my age group was listening to 80s pop, I was immersed in Bach, Mozart, Chopin and Brahms. I gotta say that this didn't win me any points with my peer group.

I liked rock and j-rock. X-Japan in my teenager years.
Actually a j-rock concert destroyed my neck back in the day. Had no feeling in my left hand for five days and to this day I have headaches from the spot I got a stuck nerv in my neck >.< just because I was so much into onmyouza https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LT-AhDYxAp0

My music of shame was my love to the backstreet boys >_> i was 9-10 and really liked them...
Nine inch nails was the first LP I ever bought and started my love for vinyl.

This guy right here. I can't wait for the new music this year and hopefully a tour. They're one of the best shows I've ever been to. Portishead being another.

I'm stoked, hell yeah. Trent puts on a hell of a show. Second best I've been to (all three times, haha) next to the dearly departed Bowie.

Portishead is fantastic.

What is up with that tag, anyway?
I used those words to describe this image.

Sesuadra thanks for linking that song, that was really cool to see.

Just once (ideally his last ever show) I want Trent to either have a 20 minute set that's just him on the piano, or at the very least play Leaving Hope to end the show. Have his backing band leave the stage one by one until it's just Trent and the piano.

I'd break down immediately.

I've told Sai this before so he'll probably be rolling his eyes if he ever sees this post.

NIN is my fave. I knew about With Teeth from Rock Band but only got into them about 6-7 years ago when my roommate freshman year of college listened to him a lot. Unfortunately I missed out on the Wave Goodbye tour and never thought I would see them perform live, but with the announcement of a new album and tour, I managed to see NIN 4 times in two years :D they were so fucking incredible. Like...the peak of live performances.

Edit: lmao I would cry so much, Acrid. Second time I saw him, on the first date of the 2013 tour, he played In This Twilight towards the end and I almost bawled. That song kills me. Year Zero is a super emotional album for me.

I once listened to NIN while having dirty vagina blood sex and drinking red wine.
Par for the course really.

I got into them in high school when I became friends with the new kid in sophomore year who moved here from Ohio. He got me into them and I was hooked ever since. Still kicking myself that I missed out on that tour where QOTSA opened for them. I am so pissed I didn't go, such an idiot (this was before QOTSA became one of my favorite bands, and a couple years before I got really into live music).

You're so right about In This Twilight, it's incredible live. Year Zero is a fantastic album.

I almost teared up at the end of The Raid 2 in the theater because they had 13 Ghosts II once the madness was over. Just because it came out of nowhere and it was the perfect way to cap off my favorite action movie in quite a while.

edit: I don't tear up easily. It's really just thinking about a few select NIN tracks in certain situations and the end of Gladiator. I am going to be an absolute wreck when Trent leaves us.

My ex and I usually did it while listening to portishead.
but never with blood. A lot of red wine though.. One night she suddenly said that she had fantasised about drinking my blood while having sex...

When I finally got to see NIN live after being a massive fan for many years, it was incredibly disappointing. Big hollow sounding stadium show. Gross.

raid 2 makes you tear up due to sheer awesomeness too though. <3_<3 but yeah that ending was on point.

Edgy. I bought a red towel, a NIN cd (Downward Spiral) and a bottle of red wine coincidentally. She was on her period that day. What are the chances!?

Don't even mention Trent leaving.

The man has given me musical meaning since 1991. I was four years old and I hadn't even seen Sonic the Hedgehog yet and I was listening to Pretty Hate Machine and digging it.

I.

Can't.

Even.

BTW, I was clearing out my key backlog and found these. GLHF

Now I'm over here fantasizing working in a steel mill to this song.
When I finally got to see NIN live after being a massive fan for many years, it was incredibly disappointing. Big hollow sounding stadium show. Gross.
That's suuuucks. I saw them in an arena, which I was worried about for this particular reason, especially because Explosions in the Sky sounded awful. It was still one of the best produced shows I've ever seen (thankfully).

You ever had a song playing when something bad happened and now that song is forever entwined with that event?

I remember my brother and I were driving home from school (he was driving, I was like 15) and U2's "Beautiful Day" was playing on the radio. Well, for whatever reason, we weren't paying attention when a big pile o' traffic stopped in front of us. He slammed the brakes but our clunker of a Ford Taurus hit the car in front of us. Our first accident. We stare at each other like "ohh SHIT" while Bono continues to declare how beautiful a day it is on the radio.

Now me and him both change the station whenever that song comes on.

This shouldn't be funny but it is. I think it's the way you told the story.

Nice, you just get unlucky sometimes really. I just don't do stadium/arena shows anymore. I disliked them before this, but this was just confirmation.

Few years later I saw Porcupine Tree at a relatively small place and it was legitimately incredible. Nothing since has sounded that amazing.

Off to a doctor's appointment. I drive so irregularly these days that I'm thinking of putting a cheat sheet in the car that reminds me how to do so. Gas right, brake left, something like that.

I'm going ice skating for the first time in my life tonight.
Ice skating is fun, only have ever tried it 3 times. Just know, if you fall, that's perfectly fine and normal. Just fall forward instead, cause falling on your back on that hard surface can hurt.

Here's me on the Hampton Court Palace rink in UK when it was raining hard as hell. I fell twice before taking a selfie vid, it's cool.
