Desert Vista High School students spell out racial slur on t-shirts

No matter what happens, be it discipline or whatever, it won't affect them in greater society in any discernable way.

However, if one of these girls becomes a gate keeper (i.e. a loan officer, teacher, real estate agent, hiring manager, etc.) they CAN affect members of greater society in an extremely negative way.

That is why this is dangerous.

A distinction needs to be made between a racist remark (or even minor action) and a racist person. Someone that tells a racist joke is not inherently racist nor is someone that uses slurs for the sole purpose of shock value (though it is dumb most of the time).

That being said, there is reason to believe these girls do have racist tendencies, even if not necessarily malicious and more based on ignorance/insensitivity. Of course no one here actually knows them, so we can't say for sure.

I don't know. I mean I think that if you say or do something racist, you're a racist. People can't necessarily control their thoughts but they can control what they do or if they entertain those thoughts and once they do, they are racist. How racist? I mean guess there are different levels, that person thinks they are better than a member of a race, that person wants that race to be treated differently. Different, sure, but in the end, yeah, racist.

Well said

Why would you need to say the word that badly? Even when alone?

Because it's cool dude. Its like back in the 50's, kids smoked Cigarettes because is rouge and dangerous and it looked cool to their friends. Well saying Nigger is like that but a million times cooler. Added bonus is potential shit on a whole group of people.

Oh definitely not. They would never act that way in front of black people. A couple black friends of his are coming over tomorrow night for his bday and there's no way he'd do that in front of them. But I don't think that makes him racist. A lot of times when a professional athlete makes a play he will yell "yeah nigga!" I think they are just emulating that behavior in a space where they are safe to do so.

Funnily enough I can hear them both talking about the boycotting of the Oscars now. They are behind it and are talking about how racist the movie industry is. I'm not even kidding.

That just makes them racists that are good at hiding it publicly. If they know not to do it in front of black people they know enough to know why they shouldn't use it at all.

This is pretty much what I have been trying to say. But stated in a much more coherent way. But now I see that this thread about these dumb-ass girls probably isn't the place to have the discussion.

You aren't going to find a safe place for this conversation because there isn't one. Someone is as someone does.

Only now?

Yeah I guess. I heard my roommate yelling nigga while reading this thread and decided to bring it up. But now I see that it makes me look like I could be defending or justifying the girls' actions. Which wasn't my intent. They are pieces of shit no doubt about it.

Ben Carson..he's their ni99er.

You're not wrong. I was chased by white teens from the adjacent middle school when I was 1 of 4 black kids I'm my elementary school. Shit happens..

I was addressing the fact that teenagers involved themselves in this type of prank whereas an adult would hopefully know better.

Honestly it sounds like your friends need to think on using the word. It seems like they are principally against racism which is a good thing but there is still at least something going on internally that is causing a contradiction. They should know they should not be using the word in any circumstances because of the history behind it. White people really need to get over the fact that they can't use a damn word. At least we weren't slaves and treated as subhuman for centuries in this country.

It's definitely a case by case thing, but I think if we're going to be absolutely set on using the label for the most minor of things (not saying this event is one of those), then maybe we should take a hint from Avenue Q.

Of course. We wouldn't want anyone to feel offended or feel the need to self-reflect and maybe change their actions as a result.

As long as they can say "yeah but I'm not a racist!" like homeboy here is doing for his friends...

That's not what I'm saying at all though. If anything, I would hope the outcry would make these girls think "okay, maybe that was racist and I don't want people to think I'm something I'm not". But on an individual basis, I'm not 100% going to say these girls are maliciously racist because I don't know them. I don't know if they were just being idiot edgelords, I don't know if their sense of humor is based on being as offensive as possible, and I don't know if they actually truly are racists that probably complain about BLM in their free time and support said group's treatment at Trump rallies. It could be any of those.

obviously these teens were about to go Reggin' and this is all a misunderstanding.

it all comes full circle

Well, no, people are largely addressing you because you continue to defend your roommates' right to repeatedly make "racist remarks" with impunity, and then dodging when people ask you why you think that's okay.

I'm not really defending his right to use the word. And I'm definitely not condoning it. I just don't believe he's a racist based on our past conversations. Hearing him yell "yeah nigga" after scoring a goal in fifa while drunk doesn't really change that. And by racist I mean literally the belief that certain races are inferior. I just don't believe he thinks that way.

I was addressing the fact that teens learn from their families and peers. Those fucks weren't misguided while calling me and my steps niggers..unless you know something I don't. Kids/teens can be ruthless. Let's not pretending otherwise..
Just to be helpful. Considering how this thread was going prior with you, I'd stop the jokes involving that word. That, or say it already. Do what you will..I ain't your boss.

I'm still of the mind that these girls come from a position of ignorance, and think they're being funny in their edginess. Could there be a level of racism involved? Sure, but racism is birthed from ignorance, so hopefully this whole ordeal teaches them a lesson and they can recognize why their behavior was so vile.

But to see the vitriol in this thread, that these girls are racist scumbags deserving to be denied college and their names drug through the mud on a national level. I'm disappointed. And I know that what they did is upsetting and disgusting, but they're dumb teenagers who still have time to grow; let's not deny them that opportunity for one ridiculous mistake.

How do you feel about this scenario: a Jewish guy and a black guy, two best friends, call each other slurs as pet names. Both highly persecuted minorities, both using words with a ton of shitty history behind them. Are both of them racist/prejudice?

These were my college friends that were roommates. I had no problem with said black guy calling me a kike either as a pet name, but he stopped knowing I was uncomfortable calling him by the n word. He thought it would make him look like an asshole if there weren't slurs being thrown all around.

I have no problem identifying idiot edgelords who think racism is funny to use for shock value as racist themselves.

And I'll respect that, but do you feel the same way about comedians that utilize that type of humor. Do you believe Louis C.K. is racist based on something like this? Or does the absurdity of the conversation somehow negate that?

Louis C.K can and has admitted his own racism. Why do you need us to decide?

I mostly agree with you but I can definitely understand the vitriol from people who themselves have been denied opportunities. It's definitely not a subject that can be discussed in such a sterilized fashion. Some vitriol is to be expected.

Do I think the use is racist in that exact scenario? Probably not though I would honestly refuse. But because one Black guy is ok with other people calling him a nigger doesn't really change that the word shouldn't be used when absolutely most would not be ok with that. You're using a rare exception (is it even that?) to try and justify the word being used by a White person. Just don't use it.

Gawd DAMN it. Thank you. As if it needs to be repeated over and over that we aren't a monolith. One dude will accept that shit and be ok. Me? Imma split you. Call that irrational all you want. That's my limit..

I was just using it as an example of a case by case thing as you said before. Good friends are obviously going to have a higher tolerance for that stuff and are more likely to understand intent.

I'm surprised you didn't point out the use of kike at all though, which is similarly pretty bad considering the history behind it.

this is white privilege LITERALLY spelled out and there are still people falling over themselves defending this! the rest of us don't have a chance in hell!

Given the history of White people and Black people, how can you not expect this vitriol? Anytime the n-word is involved it will elicit such an emotional and angry response.

And to have this shit happen so close to Black History month too.

Those kids aren't these kids, so I fail to see how it was relevant. Unless of course you have a link where there is documentation of these particular teens harassing minorities? Otherwise, I don't see the logic of conflating two independent occurrences. If you really feel the need to crucify these teenagers for the actions of the people that harassed you and your siblings in the past, you need to see a therapist. These teens should be disciplined for their stunt and nothing more.

wait you actively want me to say it?

im just trying to be clear about what you're saying here

i got pounced on for trying to genuinly speak my mind earlier, so im walking on eggshells about putting anything significant out there

I feel the same way about any racist slur. Do I think the N word is worst? I think it is, just because of the history in America between Blacks and Whites particularly but I'm not really even comfortable saying that. People that use those words that are racist are horrible people in my mind. I hear you say the N word and you're White, I really don't care the context, I'm not being friends with you. Same with the word you said or or whatever else.

But I think that's all I'll say on that topic. I feel like I'm speaking on behalf of other people on something I can never truly understand anyway. So I'll just let others carry on.

So two thoughts:

One:
Can't wait for Jon Ronson to pick this up and add it to a new edition of his book and turn these racist girls into the "actual victims". It'll probably end up as example 15 of 17 of PC/Outrage Culture Run Amok

Two:

Today on Gaf I've learned that at 14 you're old enough to be responsible for luring men in for sex but not old enough at 17 to be racist.

Can we get a declaration on pissin on them?

I guess I should have posted first saying that these girls are obviously ignorant pieces of shit. I was more talking about my roommate and his friend yelling stuff like "yeah nigga" while playing fifa. Which I think is worth condemning but not necessarily racist.

What does your roommates playing Fifa have to do with some girls with a shirt spelling out Nigger? With the gg replaced with two asterisks as if that somehow makes it out?

wait you actively want me to say it?

im just trying to be clear about what you're saying here
Yup. That's exactly what I want. Ignore the front..enjoy the ass.

---

Casimir, kids will be kids..unless they aren't. Just strange to constantly see the line shift. Not saying they're the same kids. Just saying kids can be fucking evil, and we need to stop pretending otherwise. Hopefully, that clears things up..

I dunno, man. I tend to think that nothing [****simulated] is truly off-limits in art - especially satire or social commentary or realism, which are approaches meant to address uncomfortable topics - but certain subjects are much harder to do well without shitting the bed. Racism, like rape or other loaded topics, is definitely one of them. Just because someone is laughing doesn't necessarily make it okay.

I don't disagree, I just don't know if I'm comfortable calling a comedian racist (unless we're sticking with the rather light Avenue Q definition) or a rape apologist or whatever when the only indication of that is something in their work or something with an all-encompassing intent to offend. I mean, I'm a fan of Aristocrats jokes, but I would hope people don't think I'm cool with any of the reprehensible stuff said in them happening in reality.

Same with the word you said or spics or whatever else.

I mean if you want to play the history trauma Olympics here, I'd say Jews are either winning or tied for first here, though that's besides the point. If the context is history, then I can understand where you're coming from, though in that case I'd go a step farther and say not just whites but no one that isn't black should use the n word in a normal situation. Same with any slur really.
