Desert Vista High School students spell out racial slur on t-shirts

At this very moment I can hear my roommate and his friend (both white) drunkenly yelling nigga this and nigga that while playing fifa with each other. Are they racists? No, they would describe themselves as very liberal/progressive people. Are they being racially insensitive? Probably. But is it really racially insensitive if no black people are there to offend? That's a more murky question. I think branding the use of the word nigga as racist should be more about the intent behind the word or if it's directly aimed at someone as an insult.

The ubiquity of the word in popular culture is definitely a problem in determining who the actual, malicious racists are. For example, if you were to play every song on my ipod and identify every time the word nigga was used, I would seriously not be surprised if the number was as high as 500. Will I (white) rap the word along to the song if I'm alone in my car? Absolutely. Is this racist behavior? I don't think so because racist thoughts aren't going through my head when I say the word.

Are these girls racists? I have no idea. They all very well could be the most hateful, scummy racists on the planet. And the fact that they took a picture of this whole stupid stunt definitely hints at that being the case. The kids definitely need some reeducation and serious punishment in some form. But as others have said, internet mob justice, doxxing, and miserable lives should ideally be saved for those who use the word publicly with racist intention.

But it's pretty hard to have any sympathy when they took a fucking picture of this behavior AT SCHOOL.

god i hate the internet sometimes

edit: obviously racist, next time your friends shout nigger playing Fifa pls tell them that, without condoning or condemning.

can i bring something up to you guys, this happened a few months ago

i was walking through the soup isle at wegmans and i saw some generic ramen that was labeled "oriental flavor"

and i was like, "erm, i thought the was offensive?"

wegmans is a pretty big corporation, so surely they knew?

did i miss something?

What does your roommates playing Fifa have to do with some girls with a shirt spelling out Nigger? With the gg replaced with two asterisks as if that somehow makes it out?

Admittedly they are very different situations. I just brought it up because it was going on as I was reading this thread. I honestly thought that black people considered the use of "nigga" and "nigger" equally offensive when used by white people. I guess they are both examples of white people using the word? This is what happens when I have to stay in and drink because of a snow storm...

Yes I'm sure the ramen was deeply offended

What are you doing?

The depths of people never shock me , but the idiocy of posing for pictures that they know will get on the internet is mind numbing.

They probably didn't put enough weight in the n-word to consider the repercussions

What are you doing?

this thread draws people who i thought would have the answer, and its partly on topic with the racial slur convo going on

and i had completely forgotten about it until this thread jolted my memory just now

and im genuinely grateful to have it answered

did i do something wrong?

Gonna be a long month..

Huh..those kids who were offended sure sounded mature about it. Seems like it was clear what was wrong with the whole thing to them. Shame those girls are so clueless in comparison..oh well!

Fascinating that they blurred the racists but left the BSU picture unblurred.

Also frustrating that everyone had to quickly say that they don't represent the environment of the school...

Yeah, apparently they don't think their readers can match the letters?

We also know that the girls didn't switch shirts or anything, as far a I can tell.

Was admiring them too. I mean, they clearly laid out their thoughts on it while not getting emotional or angry. You could tell they just wish it wouldn't have happened. Kudos to them for being mature, something their other particular classmates need to work on.

But we've now shifted the conversation to comedians, who are trying to provoke people (ideally to laughter) in some way as part of their very job description. These girls are not comedians. Some internet edgelord making jokes about jews in ovens? Also not comedians, and I would absolutely call that racism. I mean, there's a huge qualitative difference there. Comedians are usually at least occasionally funny, for one, and often trying to make a point in some way or skewer the racism itself (ala The Onion.)

I again believe it's an intent thing, but you're right, the conversation has shifted to something else, and I apologize for that.

I think the difference in the anecdote you shared about your friends (not the clip) is that there was a mutual understanding and respect between the two of them underlying these jokes, they both came from disadvantaged groups, and the black guy stopped when he realized the situation wasn't the same with you. In other words, it's different in almost every facet than white people using the n-word in the contexts we're discussing.

Again you're right, I was just taking issue with the absolutist attitude, but it's off topic nonetheless which I also apologize for.

These assholes are literally spelling it out on their fucking shirts and the gaf defense force still managed to swoop in. Ya'll kill me sometimes.

The only thing that matters is the struggle against patriarchy apparently. Anything that puts white women in a bad light is glossed over smh.

You should probably recognize where you have failed when you're using your sarcastic strawmans to defend the racism.

They are under the age 18, people do stupid shit. I'm not condoning what they did, but fuck there are a 1000 more important racial terms to focus on then what a bunch of uneducated teenagers did with stupid one stupid photo session.

But hell where there is smoke...

What are these more important racial terms that we should focus on?

Oh there's unquestionably fire and if we're being honest, we can recognize that. You don't even really think to go there if there's no fire. Saying there's more important things well...nah not really. This is the future of racism right here: ironic in public and ingrained in private.

I get it I do. But at the same stage, think how you were at 16-17 whatever, people do stupid stuff, I hope they change their stupidity.

What else can really be said? They don't change or they do. I am hoping for the latter as an optimistic, but I don't live in the US so I am uneducated on long term views, so perhaps I am looking at this without the due cause it needs and I will admit that.

Can't be that uneducated to know what the word ni**er means then be all smiles and shit taking a picture. They knew what they were doing and still decided to do it. No excuses.

Then tell us... What are the more important terms? Tell us what is, in fact, according to you more important than a term used in reference to a people once torn from their land, enslaved, and cruelly punished; maimed; and murdered for centuries. Oh wise one, do tell. What have we missed?

What are the "1000 more important racial terms?"

Just saying they are young and dumb doesn't excuse this.

Again they are under the age of 18. It's not right, but I'm not calling for blood. I guess I am saying you can change in your 20's, I know plenty of 'racist' people who have. (edit due to LK Pie)

Guess you were a perfect angel teenager! Last time I checked being ignorant and stupid were sometimes apart of being a NON ADULT.

I don't know about you, but I wasn't a racist when I was a teen. So are we going to get a list of those 1000 more important racial terms?

I was no angel, and if I was caught doing some of the stupid shit I did when I was younger you better believe I would have been held responsible. Also, even though I was doing stupid shit, I wasn't a racist.

I am not sure why you are not getting this, but just because you are under the age of 18 doesn't mean it is forgive and forget. That is some bullshit.

edit: And who is calling for blood?
