DarkMaus is a top-down ARPG that looks like it takes takes more than a few cues from the Souls franchise (right down to UI elements!)

DarkMaus is an indie action RPG with challenging, skill-based combat that punishes careless play. In DarkMaus, you play a lonely wanderer searching for what’s left in a corrupted world. The odds are against you – you will certainly perish.

A dark world to explore: Search for answers and secrets in the desolate land of Hazath, whose inhabitants have gone feral.

A worthy challenge: Combat in DarkMaus is thoughtful and skill based. Enemies force you to be reactive to survive, and punish any greedy moves or mistakes. You’ll start out swearing that it’s impossible, and end up a god among Mäuse.

Combat style variety: From spears to greatswords and bows to fireballs, DarkMaus has a large number of viable builds and playstyles.

A unique twist: Each time you die, an ally ghost is summoned that retraces your steps, fighting by your side. With time you can collect multiple ally ghosts and choose their weapons for extra strategy opportunities.

DarkMaus is designed for a controller, and is currently being developed for PC only.

Release: Jan 26 2016

Game is $9.99.

Cover me in Ratsak if old.

So like Dark Souls, except not, in almost every way?

Well hell, I don't want to shit post the first post, but you way oversold the DS part.

It actually looks interesting. What a strange (but intriguing) concept.

Sif better be a Cat.

so like dark souls in that its a hard game?

Looks like it checks off all the 'Souls-like' Aesthetics to me.

From just a cursory glance at the Video, I see:

- Difficult combat that requires positioning and skill
- Dark, imposing atmosphere
- Big-ass boss monsters
- Multiple Weapon types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses

So yeah.. looks like a Souls-like to me!

Looks fun, what's the price? I can't see anything on the Steam page. I'll probably wait for a sale regardless though.

Yeah it looks like such a cash in I can't imagine paying full price for it, whatever it is. One of the downsides of clearly trying to piggyback off another series popularity

So just hint at Dark Souls at hope the name along will drag the game along? It looks fairly fun and I might give it a shot for £1 or 2. Looks a tad FLASH game for me though.

Also:
Campfires are very important in DarkMaus, just like bonfires in Dark Souls. They let you heal, but also revive any regular enemies in the area. They are the only place where you can spend your gathered Marrow to level up, and resting at one saves the game.

All those are definitely Dark Souls only things. Dark Souls was the first game to have any of that.

Also lmao at the campfires. This shit is shameless.

What in the fuck. Shameless indeed.

Shamelessness aside, I'm going to reserve judgement on the title till I actually PLAY it.

For the moment, I just made the OP cause I thought it looked interesting. also, there need to be more games with Mice as the main characters.

That I agree with. I long for more Brian Jacques inspired games.

It looks like it could be fun, but the sound-design seems really unimpressive based on the trailer. Impacts, even fatal hits, just sound like you are ticking a checkbox in an UI, and lack any real impact. The visual design also seems more bland than bleak, with no apparent variation in environments (everything is black borders around a sand coloured floor).

Looks Souls-like to me.

Looks alright too, will add to wishlist.

Not sure what the big deal about having bonfire as a savepoint/level up area / safe place etc.

Eitr is also doing it and that game looks so good.

Rats, yes! Mice, hell no! Rats Rule, Mice Drool!
I need more games with Rats and Crows in them :)

Game looks interesting, i'll need to see it played first before getting excited though.

The desperation to try and sell me on off of Souls similarities makes me want to not play it.

If there was one thing I wish indies would stop doing in general is name dropping other games to sell their own. Just let your game be its own thing, even if it has similarities to Metroid or Souls or whatever if it looks like it's what I'd want as a Souls fan, I'll try it.

Looks more like the NES Zeldas, Smash TV, or Binding Of Isaac in terms of gameplay.

Souls like in the sense that the entire game has the load screen aesthetic from Demon's Souls.

Yea I was going to ask, since all the videos and screenshots seem to take place on the same tan flat background. Are there multiple tilesets or is the whole game like that?

If I weren't ass-deep in The Witness, I'd snap buy this. It actually sounds very good, and while it borrows a whole bunch of mechanics, it seems generally well-made, aside from the hideous color scheme.

Being shot by enemies off-screen in a topdown game isn't really a fair challenge, in my opinion. I saw that happen a few times in the trailer and it instantly turned me off. (I'm a Souls/BB player, if it makes any difference in qualifying my opinion.)

Count me into the group of Souls players who is getting tired of the rush of very "inspired" games that are getting much too close to what Souls games are doing themselves.
