There is an art to mastering and hiding your own insanity. Gotta keep that shit in the closet as a common courtesy.

A skill and kindness that this person clearly gives fuckall about. Whatever floats your boat I guess. *shrug*

If anyone is interested, I recall seeing this on reddit the other day - it's an explanation of otherkin in terms of using it as self-repression/coping with gender identity struggles

https://np.reddit.com/r/explainlike...s_otherkin_thing_real_as_transgenders/cypjp31

Think of it like this - If I come to the conclusion that I'm mentally a female and was born the wrong gender, there's a certain path laid out ahead of me that I would have to follow to achieve the body I was meant to have. This would involve having to come out as trans to my close circle of family and friends (because you can't just disappear from their lives for a year and reappear a different person), having to go to lots of doctors appointments, having to raise large amounts of money to cover those doctors visits while paying for all the surgeries and hormones... It's a long, mentally traumatizing, physically painful road that you have to prepare to go down if you want to change your gender.

But what if you decide you're a wolf inside, not a woman? Well then there's nothing that medical science can really do for you. The options presented to you as an otherkin are actually much less psychologically painful than those presented to a trans person. As an otherkin, you can keep your true self private from only a few chosen people, you can stay in your own private world of otherkin blogs and online communities and be loved for the wolf inside. Nobody is going to suggest you go and get a tail surgically grafted to your body.

Basically, an otherkin who believes they're a unicorn has no hard choices to make. Even the community that supports you will, to some extent, encourage you to keep that side of you private. At the very least they will acknowledge that you can't live a normal life while walking around with a horse tail and horn strapped to you 24/7. But if that otherkin were to acknowledge their unicorn feelings were just a manifestation of their desire to actually live in a woman's body, even the trans community (while being supportive) will still encourage them to take those risky, scary steps that I listed above.

Edit: Now that I actually am reading the thread, maybe people are just looking for an excuse to make fun of other people. Whatever, hopefully someone finds this insightful.

I wonder if she would have thought she was a cat if they internet didn't exist?
Maybe the internet is the problem.

You can say that as a negative but you must remember well it's true that some people believe they are cats from the internet many more learned that they were gay or trans from the internet and without the internet they might have been confused for their entire life.

Can we not keep associating this 'otherkin' bollocks with gay/trans please. I find it a bit insulting.

Without getting too into it, no, not necessarily; it's entirely possible they've always had these feline habits prior to any cat ownership or internet reading. It is entirely possible.

I have found no verifiable proof in that video that she is a cat.

She didn't knock a single thing off a table.

Faker!

How so? would you mind painting a clearer picture of how that kind of scenario would take place?

Various forms of animism or totemism? I'm no expert but I think a lot of spiritual traditions do this sort of thing.

Yeah I was wandering if Huelen is suggesting a spiritual narrative/or that tied in with a genetic one. the first been unsatisfactory the second a plot to a bad Sci-Fi flick.

Either I didn't understood or this is REALLY sad.

Because the only people who understand you are people asking you to hide it ?
WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT IS THAT ?

Isn't it lovely that acceptance of homosexuality and trans has come so far that it's now ok to shit on and ostracise other people with identity issues.

"Got mine, fuck you" though, amirite.

I am completely comfortable saying that I think this is completely ridiculous.
Me too.
But man, you know you've been on the internet too long when an animu furry is a pleasant surprise.
I was too curious to see the other, more horrifying thing, though.
Sounds about right
I was totes a dragon in my past life guiz.

Oh lordy, gene splicing will make numerous people happy.
Not when it's like that episode of Batman Beyond, Splicers
Oddly enough, one of my favorite episodes.

This guy also thinks he's a cat. I think he's a bit more dedicated than the anime-loving girl wearing a headband though.

edit: oh apparently he died. Suicide :( Many of these people need help more than anything, not indulgence. It's not always harmless delusion.
Fucking rough

Now, I'm gonna try and wing an honest opinion today:

It's insightful, but it's also more reinforcement to the notion that they should talk to people and actually come to terms with needing to feel comfortable in their own skin. Assuming I've read the article correctly, it's basically saying they've crafted a delusion to protect themselves from what they envision as a harsher reality. The ultimate bottom line is that for them to protect themselves they've created a delusion that's more harmful. Healthy social constructs are important to a person living a happy life, and I can't see any of this leading to that. Eventually a person has to come to terms so they can be more comfortable, because one of the most important parts of creating good, strong, healthy relationships is feeling comfortable. The road to be coming comfortable as a transgender person at least has a destination and can be achieved. So, assuming that viewpoint is correct, then the way to correct it is by getting the person to come to terms with the reality of what they're going through.

I'm still comfortable saying "that's ridiculous" when it comes to that video of that girl.

Maybe I am just cold hearted buuuut I don't see the "Otherkin" bs as anything but mental illness. It isn't even close to the same thing as being a trans person (imo), and I really don't think it is in anyone best interest to support these delusions with acceptance. It is mental illness and should be treated as such instead of turning someone's sickness (or attention seeking) into sideshow where feelings hold greater weight than reality.

So you're implying "otherkin" isn't mental illness and people really CAN be born human when they truly are a completely different animal all together?
Really?
Come on...

it almost certainly has to be along the same lines as DID or something similar.

in this particular case though, I'd be surprised if it was anything more than a weird girl who wants attention.

If a person is gonna stick a tail on their ass and think they're a cat that is fine, but I'm not about to take this 'otherkin' thing seriously.
