The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I still need to play all of RE0 for the first time. Only got past the train and stopped. My brother traded in REmake for this which I thought was really dumb and unnecessary. REmake was one of my favorite games ever and it was just gone one day without warning! That really soured me on RE0 and I never gave it a fair chance.

anyone replaying resident evil zero for comparision now that HD remaster is being released?

Not for comparison, as I probably won't pick up the remaster unless it gets a physical release. But I never finished Zero back in the day, so I was thinking of giving it another shot. REmake is one of my favorites, but Zero never gripped me.

it should have soured you on your brother lol.

your bro's actions souring you on RE0. =( hopefully, you can give it a chance now that some time has passed. =)

good news, RE0 remastered has been released in physical format w/ re1 remake as a compilation
for ps4 and xone

I was definitely annoyed with him. Always doing dumb stuff like that. He traded in all our N64 stuff for money to get a Gamecube at launch with low stock and inflated prices at local shops. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mark, PD Zero, Episode I Racer and a few other games. I get it, we didn't have a lot of money for games but trading in for a lot less brand new stuff was backwards. I went along with it, hyped for the Cube but it felt bad and it's not something I would have ever done on my own. I keep all my stuff.* At least he could never touch my NES and PS1 games because it was all purchased by me.

I still have the copy of RE0. Only recently repurchased REmake from a Gaffer in the BST thread. This past summer I got into 240p and sub-HD gaming on CRTs, RGB, etc. I'll get around to it eventually.

*I had a moment of weakness a few years ago when I threw out my PS1 and Gamecube. Not literally in the trash... I left them in an open box for anyone to take. I think I was also going to do something drastic with all my old games but realized I was veering into crazy territory and snapped out of it.

That bastard.

hey guys,
just want to update you guys, (i'm going post the same in the resident evil 0 remaster thread as well) i just ran through the first section train for PC version and Gamecube. i'm playing both off 1080p screens 16:9 diaglonal. w/ 4:3 ratio settings.

TV: Pioneer Kuro 151FD 60"
Laptop: alienware m18x 18" (also the laptop is able to hdmi out to my HDTV w/ correct aspect ratio/no overscan)

First thing i noticed immediately was the picture is a bit stretched playing off my laptop even using original 4:3 ratio, making Rebecca's face and legs look a bit plump on the PC version via laptop.

posting some quick and dirty A and B pics between PC and Gamecube version (not too scientific):

using eye judgement, notice the window frame, passenger seats and chandler re: stretched ratio.

Hmmm... It could be due to the way your hdtv scales 4:3 content. Different screens may have different settings crop or squish the image in different ways.

Then again, I am totally guessing and think that you're probably right that capcom messed with the aspect ratio.

Edit: Actually... Maybe it's the setting on your laptop that's off? Try comparing it to the console screenshots. I'd do it but I'm on mobile.

yeah, that definitely may be a factor.

but one thing that's evident: take a look at the numbers on the wall of the first picture (right wall numbered 7868-563) and the opposite side where the plaque is. PC version widens the scope of view vs. the gamecube where the numbers and plaque are cut off. (shots were taken static, right after entering the door with no movement on either screen, idle stance/active stance)

Thought I would ask in here see what you guys think. Long ago when they were new I bought 2 component cables. One to use with my tv, and one I had modded into VGA cables to use the GC's 480p mode on my computer monitor at the time.

I see GC Component cables are highly desirable. I just recently refound my modded VGA cable, do you guys think it's as desirable as unmodded component cables?

I would think those that have monitors would find it preferable to run dolphin off their pcs. People looking for the component cables are a niche, people looking for gc vga cables would be an even smaller niche.
The question really is what would that niche be willing to pay. I think they would pay up but it would be difficult finding one of them.

Would it be possible to revert the mod back to component? Since the cable have been hacked up I would guess that they may not fetch top dollar but I could be wrong.

Just got back from Half Price Books where I picked up a complete copy of I-Ninja for $7.99. Never played this one, but I just saw that this is one of the few GC titles with wide-screen capability.

They had a few other games there that I already have in the collection like two copies of Rogue Leader for $6 each, Soul Caliber for $10, and then some other insignificant titles like Harry Potter and the like. Better leave those for others, I thought.

What on earth is I-Ninja?

I've been kinda getting into the GCN lately, playing Billy Hatcher, Mario Sunshine, Megaman NT, and Viewtiful Joe. I have been having problems getting Mario to read the disc, even when the disc looks to be in good condition. My console is a launch console, and is there an easy way to clean this thing since it is pretty dusty? I watched part of some Youtube video where it said I needed some special screwdriver tip thingy that I can get off of ebay but is there an easier, simpler way to open it up without needing a screw driver part shipped to me?

Nintendo Life did a video review on the True HDMI mod for GCN

https://youtu.be/nnE_fem4xb0

Stumble on this when Shin was asking about his cable. Wanted to research VGA mods on the component cable and came across that link. Looks like an OK mod but damn that gaping hole is nasty. I'm curious if there are cleaner versions of the mod or if needed 3D printed replacement back plate could be created to accommodate the digital av slot to an HDMI slot.

Word on the street is there will be a more clean way to do similar video out mods this year. Also potential for cloned component cables. Basically just logistics at this point from what I've read.

Did a bit of quick reading on the HDMI mod. It looks like at least one site falsely reported the mod did analog to digital conversion. On GC forever, the creator says it's YCbCr to (digital) RGB. Which means digital to digital.

Also the mod merely takes the end signal from the digital port which means 2 things:

1) It's only compatible with a digital out GC.

2) It doesn't control anything else - hence why it can't force 480p.

It'd be nice if it could intercept game code to force 480p and even anisotropic filtering, but alas that is only a pipe dream. Welp, it looks like a good mod either way... It just has its limits.

Edit: BTW, I posted my component cable up for sale in the BST thread - in case anyone is interested.

do you really look at the back of the Gamecube, ever?

Basically, as far as is known right now (and if I even am correct at that) there will be two versions:

An analog version
This version contains a DAC to convert the digital video into high quality analog video of your liking; VGA (only for 480p) and component. Naturally, this will be the perfect option for a crt. This version is expected (purely speculating here) to have digital sound through optical-out. Why I think so? Because gcvideolite (which he presumably uses) by design carries optical audio and the guy has made optical audio mods before.

Digital HDMI
This is a digital to digital connection; YCbCr to RGB HDMI. It will contain both digital audio and video in one connection, thus the requirement of only one cable. This is the one I am most excited about personally.

Now, if I understand his video/teasing correctly, both the digital and analog version will be offered through plug and play (no soldering, case modding etc) as well as internal modding (with extra features for the digital version, not sure on that to be honest). For those worrying about a hole in their cube if you decide to do an internal install, instead of plug and play, he apparently has this little connector that (my speculation again here) goes on the spot of the digital out port, which you need to desolder, to make it look as a "factory finish".

This guy, and the GC-forever scene in general, really go the extra mile with anything they develop, it really is an amazing little community.

Now it doesn't need to force anisotropic filtering or 480p for that matter, because there is already a homebrew application which does exactly that among other things, such as 16:9 aspect ratio forcing.
It's called swiss and it is amazing and still actively being developed. Really, you should look it up.

Plug and play? So it will just use the existing digital-out port? That sounds appealing to me, but I'm sure the cost will have me reconsider.

There are solutions in the works designed to essentially replace 200$ component cables, so there's going to certainly be a focus on cost.

We're all well acquainted with Swiss here too. I can appreciate all the work that went into creating this mod, but some people aren't too hot on it. As for me? Well I'm selling my component cable. ;)

I'm really thinking about picking up a Panasonic Q. I've wanted one for yeeeaaaars now, but I think I'm finally going to try to grab one.

Now I just need to decide whether I want to take the chance on grabbing one that has a messed up disc drive. Pretty decent discount on those, but I would have to take a chance on actually being able to fix it. Most of them seem to be fixable, but it looks like the tray can break sometimes. If I got one with a broken tray I would be pretty screwed.

I wish I had bought a complete one in the box back when I had the chance a few years ago. Oh well.

I'm curious as to how whoever is going to recreate the digital connector for the GC. After all, it's a proprietary design and replicating it would be quite the task.

Thank god. The community needs a more reasonable alternative to those stupid-overpriced component cables.
