Street Fighter V Beta IV Thread: Jan 30-31

Karin is truly everyone's Bae. I swear there were hours when I felt like she appeared more often than Ryu. I have no clue where all that Necalli action comes from, though.

Ryu
Karin
Ken
Laura
Mika=Bison
Everyone else
disconnects
Zangief
Rashid
Dhalsim
Vega

My encounter rate was something like that.

Yeah i fought way more laura, rashid and nash's than necallis.

Gravity Rush Remastered comes out tomorrow so I'm cool with waiting 2 weeks for SF V to drop because I'll at least have something chill to play in the mean time.

Rashid not being popular makes me sad, and I don't know what Capcom could do to change that.

I guess, make his overhead combo-able would be a start.

I got all the Necallis and Dhalsims that you didn't. ;_; I have no answers for those match ups.

Never in my life thought I would see ken that low
A lot of people might be migrating to Nash. He currently looks like the coolest blonde fireball character of the game.

Probably because the graph uses top ranked players for measurements instead of the total online populace. That probably explains why Vega and Sim are closer to the middle. I literally fought them a handful of times. No one seems to be using them. Good news for me because Vega's normals are nuts and Sim's floating and fireballs might be a pain to deal with. Top ranked players will get that.

EX DP all day if you use Karin. If you run out of meter just do what I do when I fight Birdie. Curl up into a ball and cry until your V-Trigger meter is full.

Not having as tough a time against Birdie as I'd expect, but his damage is still scary.

My PS3 Mad Catz TE Round 1 doesn't work at all in Windows 10, though it did work in Windows 7. From what I've understood it's because the stick uses some kind proprietary USB 1.0 protocol that Windows 10 no longer supports. Apparently newer TEs don't have the same issue.

Did you just switch to Windows 10 or did you swap motherboards as well? My TE used to work natively on my old motherboard because of that protocol being supported by the USB controller whereas my current one doesn't. I ended up buying some cheap VIA USB 2.0 PCI card and it also works under Windows 10. It's the first time I'm hearing W10 doing that, which is why I'm curious.

I played like 3-5 Ken over the break. I played as Ken myself this weekend. He's pretty interesting, but his run needs to be reworked in order to his vskill more viable. I basically want to be able to cancel our of it with more stuff.

Playing Vega, once the final drops I need to get into the lab and have the dummy do Necalli's charge move and see how best to stuff it. Once he gets in it's like a damn horror movie.

Looking back I think Birdie was the character I saw the least.

Felt like I was the only Necalli. I fought like two... the rest were Karin, Laura, Ryu and Ken in no particular order.

They want you using V-trigger for that. Being able to do it with v-skill is too redundant and a bit OP. He pulls crazy damage out already without it, he doesn't need more combo extenders.

It's comparable in strength to a lot of other characters v-skills.

Whoa, the game's not even out yet, Rashid already has tons of options with how to mixup the opponent, I don't think anyone has a comboable overhead outside of counterhit or v-trigger so far in this game.

I selfishly want my characters to be OP.

Just playing. His full screen overhead with V-trigger is pretty OD not going to lie. Even doing Eagle Spike full screen with V-trigger activated does a lot of chip.

Vega's normals are amazing. I'd be laughing my way to the top 1k with his nonsense. Necalli is kind of surprising in how much ground he can traverse, though.

I was wondering why bipson's popularity shot up.

Character usage chart is interesting. For me it went

Nash
Karin
Ryu
Ken
Laura
Mika
Bison
Gief
Birdie
Cammy
Rashid
Vega
Chun
Necalli
Dhalsim

I saw Nash and Karin the most by a longshot. Saw a distinct lack of Chun which surprised me.

I mainly hovered around 1-1.5K LP. I had more gief mirrors than birdie matches too. Still ran into ken frequently but I did notice they were lower LP matchups and they typically spammed a bunch, I never fought one that seemed to really know what they were doing.

Nope, same motherboard. I remember that the stick would only work with one specific back USB 2.0 port in Win 7, but now I can't get it to work at all. The stick does show up under devices but Windows doesn't recognise any of the inputs.

I think he'll be more popular once the game is out and people start to explore other characters. Also, it only takes one dude winning a tournament for a character to suddenly be everybody's main. Doesn't help that he's perceived as the "annoying" character due to his easily spammable mixups, so there's the Fuerte thing.
Also, not sure if islamophobia has anything to do with it.

The stat tracking in this game is really good. I don't know if anyone else came across the stats that showed whether you played more defensively or offensively against each character or cumulatively; also putting you on a scale of 1 to 5 between the two. It's interesting seeing how my strategy changed across different characters and matchups.

Speaking of, does anyone have or know of any good bison footage? I ran into a few guys that were nasty but I can't really find any decent gameplay on youtube.

I wish the trophies would hurry up and leak. I want a plan of attack for when the game is out.

I think overall the trophies will be super similar to SF IV trophies. You can at least assume the obvious ones: complete tutorial, beat character story mode, beat character story mode with all characters, beat survival mode, win 5 ranked matches in a row, win 10 ranked matches in a row, etc

Very nice vids, thanks. Made me realize I need to keep gauge for the V-reversal, it can really be a lifesaver in some situations. The wiil2pac match was so close I yelled a bit at the end lol.

Very satisfied with how Sim turned out in V, the wait for the game will be long.
What surprised me with Dhalsim is how interesting it is on a mental level to manage his V-Meter. His V-Trigger is not one of those straight-forward activation skills that you want to pop practically immediately to reap its rewards; its effectiveness is quite situational and requires (relative) precision placement to get the most out of it, never mind that it's also further dependant on which character you're facing and what the opposing player's habits are. Sure it can be used for a hit confirm, but it won't be dishing out much damage and the white health will only start trickling down after they're on their feet again. If you do it that close, odds are the enemy is inclined to want to attack you after a quick-rise as you're still somewhat in their reach. But then it can also become a pressure tool in that same circumstance if the enemy is close to being stunned, and more knowledgeable players did start behaving in a certain manner upon realization. Hell, using it after a stun to ramp up your damage is a worthwhile option when you want to conserve EX:

So it's a balancing act of considering the above, maybe even use it defensively every now and then to deter a rushdown character from sticking to you if you have decent blocking ability, and then there's V-Reversal idiosyncracies too! Sometimes you don't necessarily want to use it strictly defensively either: with how frequently Dhalsim can rack up white health both up-close and from afar, it may be worthwhile to throw it out offensively - what with how fast his V-Meter chunks fill up when being hurt - if you can't quite open someone up and he/she retaliates for a brief moment, just so that the white health keeps adding up and doesn't recover by the time you're neutral/unsafe. Oh, and you gain a little bit of V-Meter for each hit you land while levitating with V-Skill, in conjunction with the meter everyone gains upon landing a Crush Counter.

It's a really engaging mechanic to me.

I barely messed with the beta except maybe 1-2 hours this go around. Sucks it was same weekend as The Division which is my other big hyped game for this year.

That said all of my matches were smooth. I felt Rashid was lacking in this beta. I swear some things were either harder to combo, or didn't, but they did before? Maybe my memory is hazy.

I played Sim again in that hour, and won almost all my matches. Lost only 1 to a super awkward Cammy player. I wasn't sure where the holes were for proper punishes, so I just stuck with throws to create space, but in the end it came down to pixels for us both, and I got greedy on his wake up to try an instant air JLP, and he bopped me for it.

I'm still not set on a main. I really hope Alex is out day 1 so I don't even need to debate anymore. *sigh*

Otherwise practically the whole cast is an option for me at this point.

Bummer. Perhaps it has to do with the W10 USB driver and less with W10 itself. My TE did the same thing; would show up but that was it. If you're still looking into getting it working, I THINK it's this PCI card I have.

He's high on my list of characters to try and main, but I'm saving that for when the game comes out so I have a lot of time to mess with him. Mika seemed more straight forward to play so I stuck with her the whole beta.
It is surprising how little you see of him. I think in my time with it i fought two Rashid's, one Vega, and never saw Sim once. Granted I'm in the lower tiers so it was a lot of Laura, Ken, Ryu, and Karin.

What's a good defensive character to play for someone that hasn't played fighting games in a while?

I think what's interesting about the characters in SF V is they all can be played in an offensive or defensive manner. I think you as a good player have to know when to go in and also when to play defensively. But I feel like with R. Mika and Birdie you have to really know your buttons/normals well and be super patient in order to be successful.

When I got people in the corner with R. Mika, that's when I could start going ham and really confuse and rush down the opponent. But if my opponent wasn't in the corner I really had to stop myself from jumping in and had to play the patient neutral game.

Yeah despite playing Gief with all those armored moves and grabs I found I played with the same gameplan most of the time

Push opponent to corner with lots of safe lights
AA all jumpins

Go ham in corner

Granted, I also lost a fair amount of matches bc I could have taken more opportunities, so it's something to work on.

But I also lost a few
many
because I lost my head and went for running Grabs most of the time, so balance.

Maybe because I was constantly in scrub lv 0 rank, but I fought almost nothing but Ryu and Kens. Occasionally I'd get a Cammy and Laura.
Yep, there were tons of Ryu and Ken players in newbie town. Probably half my matches consisted of those two. Laura, Cammy, Mika, and Nash were also pretty popular. Everyone else was rare in my experience, even the apparently highly popular Karin.

So now that they've confirmed that the PC version won't have Direct Input support at launch- https://twitter.com/MadCatz/status/694215961491013632

Anyone else feel PC is launching with all the beta bugs as well? Steam forums are going to be a mess of crash reports from Wacom Tablet owners.
Other than the slight inconvenience of needing a third-party solution for my stick, the PC version was smooth sailing for me. Hopefully that continues into launch. :x

edit: Actually, the lack of a fullscreen window mode was odd. Not a bug of course, but it's practically a standard feature these days. Hopefully that gets added in if it's not there at launch.

I'm a Nash loyalist, so I only played Nash.

I ran into a lot of Karen, Mika, Ryu, and Laura.

The next biggest group was Ken, Zangief and Birdie.

I ran into almost one or two of everyone else with this last beta.

I put about 8 or 9 hours into it this time around.

It's going to be a long two weeks. Already wish the game was out now.

Having said that, Dhalsim is a ton of fun. Barrier of entry is relatively high compared to others because of how his grounded normals aren't as snappy as they used to be (which was already known from the get-go) to the point where screwing up once can lead into a very unfavourable situation, but once you adjust he's so... slippery. You can be quite shrewd with his new moveset and I'm no longer worried about his ability to zone people out, fireballs included. Also helps that his pressure game is fairly legit now thanks to all the white health he can accrue on blocked attacks, plus his combo damage is respectable enough. Ample usage of his V-Reversal to shake off rushdown characters also netted me a lot of wins; called it a night after reaching 2500 LP (having gained approximately 800 that day) and his V-Trigger was better served as a situational tool with how I played him anyways... which was admittedly amateuristic. People did struggle with the distance game because of it however, but I'm guessing there was a low number of Dhalsims to practice against in the beta anyways.

Still say his yoga beard should've been on yoga fire for extra intimidation factor. And here's two matches against some European tourney players:

vs will2pac (Nash)
vs Phen0m (Necalli)

Nice matches. Yeah, Sim is a lot different in this one. Some neat stuff is possible though.

Right before the beta ended, I heard that Sim can combo after an air flame? I didn't have time to try it out though. Anyone else try it out?
