Rise of the Tomb Raider in the Ukrainian Windows Store: 234UAH (~9,11USD)

Is this supposed to be a joke post? How dare people care about options and their preferred external software to run alongside a game!

There's nothing wong with caring about your preferred external software etc to use with your games. But there's also nothing wrong with not caring about any of that. I wouldn't pay an extra $1 for all that stuff, as I never ever use any any of it. I honestly prefer consoles, and how they work.. and the only reason I use a PC at all is because it's more powerful. If I could buy an Xbox the same power as my PC, I wouldn't game on PC at all.

This was my first and also my last foray into buying games from the Windows store. This is GFWL redux.

The lack of any kind of overlay or injection is ridiculous, MS isn't going to win back any people with this. Also, has anyone noticed it is IMPOSSIBLE to remove the Windowsapps folder if you decided to move it to another drive? You have zero rights on it, it is preposterous. You would have to use a Linux live cd/usb to actually remove it...

Anyway, game is great up to now though, but would really prefer it on Steam. Has anybody an idea if it would be possible to transfer the save games from Windows version to Steam?

As far as I can see, the save games are located in %appdata%\Local\Packages\39C668CD.RiseoftheTombRaider_r7bfsmp40f67j\SystemAppData\wgs and then some random number, files without exentsion.

I have no idea if it is the same filetype as the steam version...

You can move apps to another drive via system settings. I think it's under general -> Applications, but I'm not 100% sure. I did it two nights ago, though.

But yeah, the extent to which they locked down the WindowsApps folder is ridiculous. I'm not sure exactly what they're trying to accomplish.

For all we know Microsoft allowed this "loophole" on purpose to drum up sales for the game and promote their online storefront.
If they don't patch this loophole in due time, then I guess this conspiracy theory must be true. :) Sony was really quick to patch the Division beta/pre-order loophole.

Btw, do you lose performance if you don't have true fullscreen mode? What's so bad about it apart from losing FPS counters and stuff like that? Windows 10 supports Game DVR as far as I know and perhaps they could extend this feature to include streaming (like ShadowPlay/Remote Play) as well.

I guess Windows Store apps run like Xbone apps, since they share the same OS. Or does the Xbone support true fullscreen mode?

It's just classic Windows(/Microsoft). I respect them, but their attitude is definitely: "Shit gotta be totally locked down, because uh, reasons! Reasons like security and saving you from yourself! The only thing left to fear is yourself!"

I can't imagine you would lose too much if any performance not being exclusive fullscreen, since my GPU usage is like 0 or 1% if you're just idle on the desktop.

how do I fix this :( I checked for updates and it says I'm up to date

2UslOre.png

I kept getting that, checked a few times and it downloaded a new Win 10 build, after I restarted a couple of times, worked fine after that.

I was running latest build and also got the greyed out box telling me to update by clicking OPs links. I manually searched for the game in the storefront and it worked that way no problem.

Yeah, I know, moving the default Windowsapps installation folder is no problem. It is deleting that new folder afterwards that is impossible without actually formatting the drive. Also. if you want to see the content of that folder, you can't open it in explorer... You need to use cmd or navigate to the ORIGINAL folder in \program files\windowsapps, there is a link there to the content of your new folder.

Sorry if I wasn't really clear. but MS obfuscated this entire thing.

As what they want to accomplish? No idea, but I'm obviously not the intended audience of the Windows store.

You can open the folder in Windows Explorer if you mess with permissions. This script worked for me the other day. You will not, however, be able to actually modify the contents of the folder without booting into another OS.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about the folder being left behind, though; it's not like it's taking up a significant amount of disc space.

But it's completely out of whack in this case, because they don't lock down /system32 or /windows to anywhere near this extent.

As an aside, I will note that Apple locked down pretty much ALL system files in OS X in this exact way (you can't modify anything without booting into another OS) with the new "Rootless" protection in El Capitan. The big difference is that Apple allows you to turn it off, but for some reason, most major tech websites recommend leaving it enabled, and I don't quite understand why. If you're knowledgable enough to be reading a tech website, you probably don't need Apple to protect you from yourself. I guess it just goes to show the different mindset of OSX vs Windows users.

I really don't understand how to do the steam shortcut thing mentioned. can someone show a picture how-to?

Drag the game from your Start Menu to a folder. For arguments sake, we'll say folder C:\Games. It's best if the folder and file doesn't have any spaces. We'll also rename the shortcut "RotTR"

In C:\Games, create a notepad document that says
Code:
start c:\Games\RotTR.lnk
. Save this file, and rename it from "Rise of the Tomb Raider.txt" to "Rise of the Tomb Raider.bat"

Download bat to exe, drag the .bat file in to it, and it creates "Rise of the Tomb Raider.exe"

Add a non-Steam game in Steam, point it to that .exe, job done. However, you won't get a Steam overlay or anything like that - it's just for people who want to keep all their games "in" Steam so they don't forget or whatever.

This worked great for adding Hydro Thunder and Minecraft to steam, thanks.

This method for adding to Steam didn't work for me unfortunately. A DOS box just seems to open and then immediately close again.

I used the f2ko.de converter to convert the batch file to EXE.

EDIT: Nevermind, it was my fault. I forgot to use the word start in the batch file.

I could live with there being no Steam Overlay but the really irritating thing here is that GeForce Experience doesn't even pick it up, probably because of where Win10 installs it to and the strict access permissions assigned to that folder.

I don't mind too much because of the insane price on this occasion but there is no way I would pay anything close to half price, never mind full price, for a game on the Windows 10 store right now.

Is this just for tomb raider or are you guys going to buy all your games from the Ukraine now? They are pretty much always cheaper, right?

If the opportunity presents itself, my credit card and I will be there

Still waiting for this to hit a reasonable price on CDKeys (just prefer all my games on Steam). It's still £26 which is too expensive for a one and done SP game IMO.

Gotta protect the achievement system integrity. Can't let PC gamers have the easy way with trainers and whatnot.

Not touching this. Last time someone did a workaround like this they got banned did they not?

There were some Xbox bans but nobody knows for sure what caused them. I did it as well and kept my account. Just know that in the eyes of the law you're committing fraud if you buy something with a fake home address.

I don't think that's true. I don't think any country has a law that directly states that anything you buy must be invoiced to your home address. There are always legitimate reasons why someone might need to do that after all.

Does anybody even still care about the achievement system anymore?

Having an achievement score of 100k+ doesn't make you any kind of internet behemoth. It usually just makes you a pathetic and sad bastard with far too much free time on your hands.

Does the trick still work? I've two friends who tried it, they told me that they did everything I said (everything detailed in this thread) but nothing works, at the moment to pay, they put all their bank account details or whatever, but it says "we can't treat your payment" or "the checkout" or something like that (sorry for the rough translation from French:p).

I don't know how to help them. :(

Lol, thanks for the laugh.

Some people got banned for downloading free games from the non existent Oman store, but that was closer to exploiting the system vs changing regions for a cheaper price. People have been doing this on Xbox One since release.

Mine won't save a game... every time I quit, save games are gone and I have to start over. Any ideas why? Xbox live app is installed and signed into.

The terms state specifically that you have ensure all your payment info is valid. By entering a fake address (or one where you do not live) you break the terms and commit fraud to get something you are not supposed to get.

Maybe Tomb Raider is under-priced? Here's some prices from other games in the Ukrainian Windows Store.

I've converted the Ukrainian Prices into three other currencies and then compared them to the actual prices in the specific Windows Store region.

"Rise of the Tomb Raider"

at 266 234UAH =
  • $12.864 AUD (compared to $79.95 $69.95 in AUS Store)
  • $9.037 USD (compared to $59.99 $53.99 in US Store)
  • £6.271 GBP (compared to £39.99 £35.89 in UK/England Store)

"Hand of Fate: Official Windows 10 edition"

at 532UAH 425UAH =
  • $23.365 AUD (compared to $36.69 $24.49 in AUS Store)
  • $16.413 USD (compared to $24.99 $19.99 in US Store)
  • £11.391 GBP (compared to £19.29 £15.39 in UK/England Store)

"Minecraft: Story Mode"

at 106UAH =
  • $5.827 AUD (compared to $6.09 in AUS Store)
  • $4.094 USD (compared to $4.99 in US Store)
  • £2.841 GBP (compared to £3.89 in UK/England Store)

I have no idea of how AAA games are priced in Ukraine but Tomb Raider in unbelievably cheap compared to other games in the Ukrainian Windows Store.

So, is this "mistake" done on purpose to promote the Windows Store/Windows 10 with a high profile, highly desired AAA game? :) #conspiracytheory

Goodness.

Why are people getting so angry because others have found a way to save money? This need and desire to defend corporations and attack consumers is unbelievable to witness quite frankly.

People act like companies don't look for every opportunity to take advantage of consumers but yet when consumers do the exact same thing we are the bad guys?

It's how business works, if companies didn't look to take advantage of people then the number of successful businesses would be pretty low in the modern world.

It happens in every business and quite frankly if you can save yourself money then by all means do so, being dedicated to a company and trying to be morally right by them will gain you absolutely nothing, they do not care about you, none of them do, they care about money, that's it.

Even the most "Caring" companies in the world only care about one thing, it's not like you are ripping support from underneath them when a few thousand people find a way to get the game cheap.

The reality is most people go to cd key websites and get games cheaper these days anyway, paying $20 more for a game just because you "can" does not make you more loyal, why would you pay more for something when you can LEGALLY get it cheaper? That's just illogical and it also has literally next to no impact on the companies as a whole.

If people want to pay more money for a game because it makes them feel like they are "supporting" them more then by all means do so but this notion that people are harming the developers by buying it cheap shows that people misunderstand the fundamental concept of business as a whole.

It's strange that people are conditioned to accept and ignore that multinationals with their liquid assets and relative ease of moving them is ok. But then when they are given the rare chance to level the playing field they balk and come up with a laundry list of reasons why individuals shouldn't have the same freedom to buy goods in different markets when they see the same kind of financial advantage.

It's a great deal but it's seriously crippled and the lack of exclusive fullscreen has a huge effect on framerate for people who switch focus to the desktop or other app. Not to mention fancy stuff like mods , injection, fps counters, and certain types of downsampling.

I feel mighty sorry for people who buy it at full local price and get the hobbled Windows store version instead of buying it literally on any other service.

Is anybody having issues using the x360 controller with this version? I cant seem to make it work.

I play with a Xbox 360 controller and I've no problem to make it work.
Maybe you turn on the controller after launching the game? I personally always turn on the controller before launching the game.
